Mastodon - Thickening Lyrics

With the lights down low
Wrapped up like a baby
And your hair hangs long
Surrounding my face

Straight out of nowhere
Buried deep inside my past
Straight out of nowhere
Hoping you'll be the last

Love your warm embrace
Hold me close don't let me go
Nipple pink and cold
Filled up with mother's milk

Straight out of nowhere
Buried deep inside my past
Straight out of nowhere
Hoping you'll be the last

With the lights down low
Wrapped up like a baby
And your hair hangs long
Surrounding my face

Straight out of nowhere
Buried deep inside my past
Straight out of nowhere
Hoping you'll be the last

  1. T.... T....

Love the psychedelic groove this album and OMRTS have throughout it!

  2. T.... T....

I kinda relate the lyrics to child abuse and how the effects can come back and haunt you later on in life, and it's sort of thickening your skin and soul. Just taking the lyrics and relating them to my personal experiences! I love Mastodon \m/

    T.... T....

    It’s not about child abuse.

It’s about how men relate to holding a woman as a motherly energy that reminds them of deep in the past

  3. p.... ....

    So good!

  4. A.... O....

Actually didn't like this song at first now I love it

  5. L.... U....

This intro is by far one of the most beautiful things I've heard. The drums and that bass riff are absolute perfection

  6. M.... ....

    Mastodon. Rocks.

  7. D.... D....

    Mmmm. Gimme that lizard love.

  8. B.... E....

    better than their last shit...

  9. T.... S....

one of the most intriguing songs I've heard from these guys

  10. J.... H....

Mastodon never disappoints me. Every one of their albums has songs that are gems.

    J.... H....

    Diamonds from the depths.

  11. o.... ....

Anyone else keep starting it from the beginning over and over? That two note bass riff, and spacy guitar part just sound HUGE.

    o.... ....

opethinchains over the time period of 4 hours I have listened to this song over 10 times...and that's not counting every time I rewind the first 1:30 to hear the intro. Proper band IMO

    o.... ....

    mahsheenman spot on, friend!!!

    o.... ....

It's been a year, and I'll still say yeah

    o.... ....

You sir, are so correct. And yes, yes I do.

  12. E.... ....

    t h i c c ening

  13. g.... ....

Buried deep in my past, straight out of compton

  14. S.... ....

Woah. This song is really refreshing. It sometimes makes me feel like I've never heard such harmonies. During the mini solo @2:10 it sounds like the guitars play in completely different scales but they blend so gracefully with the last note. Also this lead with ebow @2:56 gives some tension to everything. I couldn't really guess where the song was going during the first listening. Brilliant song, and I can't wait to see what these guys have to offer with the new album.

    S.... ....

Siranonim what are your thoughts on the new album? I mean Emperor of Sand. I loved it. Cold Dark Place is something truly special in my opinion.

  15. A.... S....

This has to be my favorite off the hunter album

  16. J.... ....

I feel a certain thickening whenever I hear this song

  17. T.... ....

Every time I listen to this song, I wonder why I ever stopped playing it daily. Such an underrated track

  18. F.... W....

have a shot of my whiskey

  19. F.... W....

    listen up

  20. F.... W....

they give out shitty deals like this again you'll die

  21. B.... L....

High af jamming it and ripping a bong

  22. S.... ....

    Straight out of Nooorway

    S.... ....

    HOpe it will be belfastttt

  23. a.... ....

    Straight outta Mastodon

  24. N.... 1....

    this song is so special

  25. J.... C....

I have this album, it was playing in my car non-stop for a solid year, and I never noticed any problem with the mixing/mastering, but this version here on the YouTube seems very bassy when listening through headphones...thoughts?

    J.... C....

+John Clark Hawkins Youtube compresses a lot of things just by the nature of the uploading process. I mean it prolly just made the bass more prevalent in the mix due to the bassiness of it in general. Or the uploader or wherever he got his copy from EQ'd it differently.

    J.... C....

+John Clark Hawkins Music on YT is lame quality yes, but its maybe your headphones too?

  26. t.... ....

History will prove Mastodon the decider.

  27. N.... T....

Beautiful song, to say the least..

  28. S.... ....

Brent's voice in this track gives me needs.

    S.... ....

    .......What kind of needs? ;D

    S.... ....

    +Paratrooper12100 all of 'em.

    S.... ....

+Sheyleen Saline Me too. Really wanna curl with a girl with this song in the background. Def. that type of song.

    S.... ....

+Sheyleen Saline Respectfully so, mind you

    S.... ....

    Awkward af

  29. V.... l....

    1:30 <3 _ <3

  30. B.... K....

Just because it doesnt have the cookie monster on vocals and uber brutal guitar work doesnt mean its bad. Get over yourselves you elitist metalhead trash, worst scum on the earth, worse than pretentious hipsters.

    B.... K....

    thank you!!!

  31. A.... M....

    puto oswaldo

  32. T.... ....

I still dig curl of tha burl, but i totally agree with you on crack tha skye

  33. A.... ....

woaaaah I got shivers at 1:40....

  34. j.... w....

    Guitar at 1:46 and 2:31. I die. <3

  35. B.... ....

Ehh saying that about an album with a track like Curl of the Burl on it is a little too much for me. This song is very, very good though - I just think they got something extremely right with Crack the Skye and this was quite a let down for me.

  36. B.... ....

I could totally rob a liqueur store to this!

  37. D.... ....

    Brilliant.
    \m/

  38. P.... O....

Cada vez me gusta mas este album

  39. d.... ....

no one gets your hilarous may mays XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Ur so witty XDDDDDDD

  40. 8.... ....

Thank you a million times! I 100% per cent agree with you! I recently got into an argument with someone who suggested Rush were a shit band 'cause they weren't "heavy enough". I'm so sick of that narrow-minded bullshit. Yeah, Mastodon ain't as heavy as they once were, but the last two albums have showcased their technical ability very well. Any moron can play fast (Kerry King) but to change tempos and seem, well, erratic, takes talent.

  41. E.... ....

    Oh my god 1:30

  42. B.... G....

The verse sections of this song sound so much like Queens of the Stone Age. One of my favorites on this album.

  43. 1.... ....

    gorilla warfare? Are you retarded?

  44. D.... ....

brent is one of the most talented composers in the world right now... funny that no one knows about it really

  45. G.... ....

    Mastodon to My Ears!!

  46. F.... T....

The great production quality enhances it as well

  47. J.... H....

Couldn't even spell 'guerrilla warfare' correctly. Jesus mother fucking christ.

  48. J.... H....

I'm a Mastodon fan myself by the way. And I live at 210 Red Cross Street in Wilmington, NC if you want to make the drive to kill me in one of your seven hundred favorite ways.

  49. J.... H....

Because a real Navy SEAL would totally trumpet his confirmed kills and announce his plans to use U.S. government resources to kill someone who shit on his favorite band on YouTube, or even be trolling YouTube in the first place. Keep it to the group home you fucking idiot.

  50. u.... ....

If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

  51. u.... ....

and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit.

  52. u.... ....

The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways,

  53. J.... S....

    wow this is gay

  54. g.... ....

great job at getting the point!!

  55. J.... T....

apparently brent is a psycho, and the rest of the band has issues dealing with his insane nature

  56. J.... K....

Straight out of nowhere. Ahhh AHHH ahhh AHHHH Buried deep inside my balls...

  57. D.... ....

Too bad all of these sooks can't appreciate a decent album as a result of their narrow minded heavy metal bullshit. These kinda people give the heavy metal crowd a bad name. This album produced some of the most beautiful and heartfelt music I have heard in the past decade and yet because it's not played at 1000 M/h or with distortion to 10 they cant accept it's musical merit. Heavy does not mean good. Giving your heart and soul into a song and daring to explore is good. Mastodon are thus good.

  58. K.... ....

Corporate Garbage, eh. So playing what you want is corporate garbage. I agree that Crack The Skye is better but I like this album more than I do Leviathan or Blood Mountain. These guys are just evolving and not giving a rat's ass of what anyone thinks. To me that is not what corporate garbage is what about u?

  59. S.... ....

I really don't see how this is "corporate garbage" with the exception of Curl of the Burl (that one was disappointing). The fact that it got some radio play does make it "mainstream". I will admit this album isn't that progressive at all; more psychedelic rock. Like I said don't look at Mastodon as a metal band they just want to play music. With that said I was an enormous fan of Remission and sometimes wish they would go back to that style.

  60. M.... ....

    fuck battlefield 3. period.

  61. s.... ....

some people say the lyrics are weird, but i don't think they are..i interpret them as someone finding that 'soul' mate if you will they way they take away and forget about past pains or helping you the more recent ones (such as Brent losing his brother) and the unconditional love and support you share with one another..hoping that they'll be the one until we leave this life...just my thought

  62. b.... ....

Mastodon's Musical Mastery Mustn't be Missed.

  63. T.... ....

1:34 where the song just fills a feeling of power and ecstacy..

  64. P.... U....

great musically but the lyrics are....
    a joke?
    lol

  65. T.... ....

The lyrics are weird in this song...

  66. D.... ....

I think Brent's guitar work in the intro solo is just bliss. True musicianship where you can feel he just let it rip and let the emotions pour. When I heard Brann say it's his favourite part of the album I felt quite at peace that my thoughts were justified.

  67. K.... ....

I know that but they are still metal

  68. a.... ....

Yeah... but then again Mastodon are not thrash... they're much more cerebral music

  69. c.... p....

I just bought a song about breastfeeding? Okay.

    ...And haha, Mastodon said, "nipple."

  70. S.... ....

    Oh my God, yes. xD

  71. V.... N....

I saw them in Sonishphere festival in Madrid in May.
Of course I prefer Metallica but this band is just amazing, love their style <3

  72. K.... ....

Mastodon already kills Megadeth and Anthrax five albums in

  73. K.... ....

    too funny

  74. E.... D....

I'm very glad that is not the album art...

  75. P.... ....

another perfect album by mastodon, thanks!

  76. J.... ....

This song is as smooth as a baby's bottom.

  77. j.... ....

so did i! now the song means something different

  78. r.... ....

lol, I thought it was "hoping your freedom lasts" in stead of "hoping you'll be the last"

  79. J.... W....

MASTODON....... WHAT more can I say!!

  80. t.... ....

Your comment made me smile. I think this very same thing. :-)

  81. C.... ....

Mastodon is perfecting music. We, who listen to any of their work, should be grateful that these 4 guys found each other and formed this band.

  82. o.... ....

LOVE that bass line in the beginning!

  83. o.... ....

Whatever your musical tastes, if you cannot appreciate the quality intro, pure guitar twangs and the complexity of this song after 3 listens then this stuff it ain't for you full stop. It did it for me though.

  84. S.... ....

Most people that have a problem with this album see Mastodon as a metal band and feel that they should perform as such. They then got butthurt when this album turned out to be a progressive foray into psychedelic rock. Regardless of what people think Mastodon is not a metal band they are a "what-ever-the-fuck-they-want-to-be band".

  85. 8.... ....

This is some very good stuff.

  86. P.... X....

You need to die. In a forest fire.

  87. J.... ....

You have no taste what so ever

  88. t.... ....

    Worst. Song. EVAR. Period.

  89. f.... ....

How can you call the don pathetic?!

  90. P.... ....

Damn Mastodon! XD Since Blood Mountain I try to like them ( because I want to ! And I actually dont know why :D ) but its really really hard, if youre not used to their kind of music. It is REALLY hard and only works during some reeeeeeally special hours. Anyways all the best to them.

    |,,|, from Germany.

  91. C.... H....

Dude it took me forever to figure out what that intro sounded like. It is Rush.

  92. x.... ....

To all those ignorant assholes out there who gave this album a bad review because it's not super technical, jazzy or heavy, Mastodon is a progressive band! witch means they will continue to make different material on every album, what they have done on this album is prove they don't need to be super technical jazzy or heavy to be accepted by prog, rock and metal fans.

  93. g.... ....

God that transition gives me chills every time I listen to it.

  94. S.... ....

    *looks in pants*
Well... now I know why the song is called Thickening.

  95. T.... ....

yeah I see what you mean. thanks for the feedback!

  96. Z.... ....

Meh, I kinda disagree. Their time sequences are unpredictable, sure, but that's what makes this band unique. They do rock, though.

  97. J.... B....

Bust? It has an overall score of 83/100 on Metacritic and placed as high as 10th on the American Billboard 200. For a band like Mastodon, I repeat: MASTODON, to place that high on a Billboard topped by synthetic pop-house-rap-trash, even if The Hunter doesn't peel your face away like Remissions does, is still very respectable and something a true fan of metal should support. For the record, the riff on Black Tongue has probably killed three or five people already.

  98. T.... ....

Mastodon's ONLY minor flaw in my view is time sequence. Other than that, they fucking ROOOOOCK
