What are people bitching about? I don't feel like sifting through all the comments. I guess a better question would be... those who don't like this, why not? For a band that's been around for 20 years or so this is pretty fuckin heavy. It's the perfect mix of heaviness & accessibility imo

This song is growing on me but the weak guitar tone really ruins the main riff. Its like playing a slipknot riff with the primus tone in the south park intro. This would sound killer with a heavier tone and more distortion and the song could still be balanced with the other psychedelic stuff.

The main riff feels Voivod-ish. I wonder if they are an influence on Mastodon, being that the band has such eclectic taste.

This album gets better with every listen, I wouldn't even care if the Illuminati had a hand in this production, but considering the heartfelt tone & quality of this album I am pretty sure they didn't.

I like this track but mastodons writing is getting lazier. The Brann vocal part and the main riff don't go together well at all and I think its ruins the riff in a way. Its like they came up with the amazing riff and didn't know what to do so they just started doing a "pink floyd" part when really they are just getting lazy.

I don't know why people keep saying things like "It's Mastodon, you just have to listen to it a few times and it will grow on you". You go to a Dir en Grey video and people are saying "It's Diru, you just have to listen to it a few times"...or you'll see "It's the Gorillaz, you just have to" *_no you don't_*

You _might_ but that doesn't mean you _will_ - it's not a Mastodon thing. It's a music-in-general thing, and it's going to be true for some things and false for others depending on personal taste, but yes, people should "know how this works by now".

My personal taste says this song is great, and I didn't need to hear it more than once or compare it to past Mastodon songs to figure that out. Some of those new Gorillaz songs didn't work for me quite so well. Does that mean the Gorillaz are crap now?

Tries to be gut-punchingly emotional but won't dedicate itself to being heavy or complex in order to carry it out. Tries to be engaging and occasionally frantic or upbeat, but doesn't put the work into the R I F F S in order to make that happen on a visceral level. Overwrought with studio magic and layers upon layers of quirky ornamentation. If Crack the Skye or Blood Mountain was a big, bloody steak with some interesting garnish, Emperor of Sand is a nu-male taco salad.
