Massive Attack - Come Near Me Lyrics

We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me

Quick thought, left or right
Could it be a strong case of fight or flight?
We'd never know you're slightly overworked
And self-conscious
Sweating beads of doubt
This can't be right
Whisperin' out, "This can't be right, right?"
This ain't like a DVD
Pretty from aftershave
I'm scared life will leave me
Strung out and needin' love
Surely I'm as overcome but brimstone won't come to lungs[?]

But I ain't done
Surely I ain't done
Oh, nah, nah
I ain't done
Oh, but my mind's on the run

Caused by your never-ending dream
And it ain't what it seems
It ain't what it seems
You know what I mean?

We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me

Monster on the bed, regurgitating out
There's[?] monkey on my bite
Pulling it like puppet strings, slow to react
Tell me what's the matter, love
Life's drive slow-mo
Front crawl in speedos
Fight against the rising tide
Breathe deep, never stop clawing at the light
Clinging on to what we got

But I ain't done
I ain't done
Surely, surely, surely we must overcome
But my mind's on the run
My mind's on the run

Caused by your never-ending dream
Nah, and it ain't what it seems
It ain't what it seems
Baby girl, it ain't what it seems
Nah, it ain't what it seems

Too cruel to be mean
To be cruel
Don't wanna lose ya

We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me

That scene with the ladies in the car pulling up and trying to help her is one of the most unsettling scenes in all cinema to me. It completely envelops the feeling of being in a toxic relationship, too isolated to ask for help or even hear the concerns of others. Shakes me to the core.

  22. Emil Hawking

    Massive Attack the best 👍👍👍

  23. Spacey San

To me this video is about either psychological or psychical abuse. It has the taste of it.

    Больная любовь... знакомо

  26. Tamara Robalo

I think this song is about our needs as human beings with different genders. Men need to be loved and I think this video and song show us the grim side of this reality. We see this happening in many lifes. How men have a big necessity of getting love from the one they love when sometimes there's no (more) love to give. On the women side you can see she's not running because you shouldn't run from predators, she's constantly focusing him and moving slowly as you should if theres an wild animal coming for you. In the lyrics you can read that the situation was caused by her never-ending dream which was having someone beside her to love and be loved unconditionally. This dream ain't what it seems because there's a more physical and needy aproach of love from men even when sometimes love is over. Women can easily love at distance and they can live well only with their own love and knowing somebody loves them, but men look for some kind of proof of love, associating it with other things love as nothing to do with having some kind of dark greediness over love. She knows this, thats why she's afraid (monster on the bed), because no matter how much she gives or doesn't give, he keeps restlessly looking for more. In the end she'd rather have her own demise because her dream could never be real and she'd rather die than stay trapped. A lot of toxic relationships end with one of the partners death anyways.

  28. Itay Levin

  31. Mako Troid

Boi could try walking backwards at her?

  32. DasNutellamaedchen

It's notable that, while the boys on bikes just kinda ignore them, the women in the car eventually realize that something is off. She gives them the tiniest glance and a hand gesture to not interfere. Meaning she has a plan. Add to that the fact that the man is framed in a way that makes him inherently creepy; we almost never see the man's face entirely, most of the time we only see part of his face or it's blurred or obscurred by his glasses (they actually made Jonathan Aris threatening, my compliments) and there's just the general implication of a man stepping towards a woman who imediately steps back, this could be read as the woman using his obsession with her against him, luring him into the sea at the cost of her own life so he can't be a danger to others? that's the feel I got from this video, that whatever is going on here is not only subtly upsetting but also has been going on for a while so the woman descides that this has to end

    Newgrist

That's a valid interpretation from the woman's point of view. I was intrigued by the same scene, and offered an interpretation from the man's point of view. Either way, it's a great video.

  44. Newgrist

Repeated viewings of this video have yielded new interpretations for me. The young women in the car invite the femme fatale to abandon the destructive course on which she is bent and return to the carefree fun typical of young women. In sum, they are offering her rescue. It is interesting to study the sequence that begins with the look that she then gives them. The one woman's face falls, and then she looks back in sadness at the victim, and realizes there is nothing that can be done. She has to give up the determined femme fatale and her victim to destruction.

several years later, I still have no idea what this song/video means

It aint what it seems... which one is real and which is the dream. Even then what does it mean?

The closest I can get is shes some sort of siren. Or its a metaphor for suicide or something... but doesn't quite fit still.

" a track featuring Ghostpoet, explores the isolation and irresistible downward pull of a broken relationship." ahhhhh that explains it. I was kinda right already. The pull and effect another person has on you is invisible too, so thats why the man is invisible as he is.

  55. Maria GoJa Music

Wooow this took my breath away. What a strong message ...

  56. ZaphodsPlanet
