Mary Chapin Carpenter - He Thinks He'll Keep Her Lyrics

She makes his coffee, she makes his bed
She does the laundry, she keeps him fed
When she was twenty-one she wore her mother's lace
She said "forever" with a smile upon her face
She does the car-pool, she PTAs
Doctors and dentists, she drives all day
When she was twenty-nine she delivered number three
And every Christmas card showed a perfect family
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
She packs his suitcase, she sits and waits
With no expression upon her face
When she was thirty-six she met him at their door
She said I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
For fifteen years she had a job and not one raise in pay
Now she's in the typing pool at minimum wage
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
At least until you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her

    Awesome!!
Are any of these incredible women performing anymore?!!
But we've got Taylor Swift shoved up our asses on an hourly basis.

  10. O.... ....

This will always take me back to my childhood in the 90's...TNN, CMT, and GAC....star studded!

  11. P.... Y....

Another fine artist who was forgotten by "Country Radio" / and so-called: "Country Music" audiences! Anyone who doesn't toe the line, with that commercial; corporate; bullshit country is abandoned. Thankfully, there is the "Americana" category where lots are welcomed and appreciated. The Mavericks are another example.

  12. R.... M....

Sounds like an ungrateful bitch. Guy probably worked all day and all night to provide for his family. She got to stay home, raise her kids, warm house, food on the table, but no, that's not good enough for her. She doesn't realize at 36 she's hit the wall and has 3 kids worth of baggage. Enjoy your minimum wage job at the typing pool sweetheart, Husband is better off with you gone. He's probably moved on and got himself a nice twentysomething that appreciates him

  13. L.... C....

    Still loving this in 2020!!!

  14. C.... H....

So much truth in this song...go girls...

  15. s.... ....

So awesome musically! And so ahead of her time foreshadowing the #metoo movement where 99.999% of men in the United Stares deliberately abuse and keep women down.

  16. P.... G....

Bit annoyed..got only a few glimpses of Emmylou..who looked ravishing as usual.

  17. k.... M....

This is powerful women of country music missed this kind of music

  18. R.... B....

I remember this show on TV, but cannot remember the name of the special. Help, anyone? Hopefully YouTube has the entire special for me to see? Where I first heard "Standing Knee-deep in a River", Kathy Mattea and fell in love with country music. The name of the special, anyone?

  19. K.... P....

This was when women RULED country music in the 90's; there was no "Tomatogate" back then!

  20. D.... P....

    He wakes up every morning
Drags his still tired body out of bed
And forces himself to go to a job
That he's come to hate and dread

When he was 18 he had a chance
To play pro ball, single A
But he gave up that dream
When she looked at him with tears in her eyes And cried 'Please don't go away'

And now you know....the rest of the story.

  21. J.... N....

    Suzy Bogguss is simply gorgeous!

  22. M.... R....

One of the best performances of any hit ever. Still gives me chills.

  23. S.... W....

  25. R.... J....

  26. H.... B....

Feminists? All the band members are male! lol

  27. T.... T....

wish the last instrumental music part lasted at least half a minute longer. Many musicians cut it short. Make that always a bit more longer.
    Dr. Tom, Ottawa

  28. T.... T....

Most well done Mary Chapin. I keep on watching this again and again, never get bored. Make more like this for us all. God Bless the band and all at the stage, so too the fans. Dr. Tom, MD, Ottawa

    G.... S....

I am. That is Trisha Yearwood right? Lol

    G.... S....

This is an amazing video with an exceptional group of artists backing up Mary Chapin Carpenter.

    G.... S....

It was the Geritol song. After the commercial ended with husband saying, "I think I'll keep her ! I love this song !

    G.... S....

I watched it live....and now search it out on you tube.... it was a great performance .

  32. M.... Y....

THIS SONG IS SO BAD IT MAKES ME WANT TO HAVE MY ASSHOLE DRAWN AND QUARTERED BY GEESE WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?!

  33. M.... H....

EXCELLANT singer & song, with ONE HECK of a backup!! Now is it just me, or does the drummer resemble a very young Robin Williams, between the long hair & colorful shirt? LOL

  34. M.... P....

What a talented group of ladies!!

  35. S.... d....

    Really serious back-up vocals, huh?

  36. C.... C....

  37. G.... J....

Wow Wow thats all you can say,Wow

  38. b.... s....

Who still remembers CMT Country Music Television? Am I getting too old?

    b.... s....

    How about TNN

  39. m.... ....

I remember watching this ... I believe it was the 1994 ACM awards. You won't see a line up like this on stage ever again. THESE were women of country music, unlike the stuff today. Only a very few actually sing country music!!

  40. K.... H....

This is typical. At 36 she just doesn't love him anymore? Bitch has no problem keeping his house, his kids, and half his paycheck. The whole song is about putting on a show, a front. Women are scandalous, greedy, selfish. Pump & dump is what they've taught me.
    Good tune though... 👍🍻

  41. M.... D....

This song becomes almost magical during the later stages of the chorus with Mary and the separate harmonies of the six merging into a perfect rainbow . This was an epic performance.

  42. p.... ....

God listen to that roaring audience....never again will country music like this sound the way it used to.

  43. J.... J....

Damn she had a powerful voice! ❤

  44. K.... D....

    Stunning song............

  45. s.... j....

Man I like her. Good music.

  46. H.... C....

At 3:30 the gates of heaven opened and the angels sang!!

  47. T.... H....

Has anyone ever seen Emmylou Harris smile? I wonder if her face would crack?

  48. L.... P....

He thinks he'll keep her Yes !!!

  49. R.... S....

    Trisha Yearwood

  50. O.... ....

Wow such a great group of powerful female country singers. I don't recall any of these women complaining about a glass ceiling. That's because they are so talented and capable that they shattered it.

  51. v.... ....

Damn! The divas of 90's country. What a beautiful sight.

  52. S.... M....

I finally had the opportunity to meet my favorite female country singer of the 80’s and 90s, and my crush. It was Christmas time near Kerrville, Texas in 2012, Suzy Bogguss.
She was so down to earth, so personable, such a wonderful lady, a beautiful person and very likable soul. I had my picture taken with her after her concert. We talked for half an hour. She told me that she had never met a man with my name, she told me she loved my name and she would always remember it. She actually kissed me on my lips and I about passed out. A dream come true.....now I can die happy and fulfilled.😘💋🥰

  53. s.... ....

What a line up of talent including the band members, wonderful performance.....

  54. k.... ....

How many women watched this video and said '"screw it. I'm leaving his sorry ass!"

  55. R.... W....

Just here for Trisha Yearwood’s background vocals ❤️🎼😁

  56. J.... R....

I'm thinking in what order I'd take them to bed 😂

  57. A.... K....

It feels like she's singing about the protagonist of every shitty entitled love song.

  58. M.... E....

    😘😍💋😥

  59. B.... U....

    Love love love this song

  60. L.... P....

What amazing talent in one spot , very well done.

  61. B.... 2....

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! Except that audience should have been on their feet from the start... what a fabulous fabulous performance and, what a fabulous fabulously written track!! Thank you county USA .... love Yorkshire,UK xxx 🙏👌🏾❤️🌈🇬🇧🇺🇸.... love from over the pond xx

    B.... 2....

Thanks just the same. Love to you too! Some great bands from the UK, as well. This video sounds so good. Makes me feel so good, I cry.

  62. c.... ....

The thing about Mary Chapin.....if you have a heart in you her songs can break it and they can also mend it, its a very fine line; if you dont have a heart her stories will give you one because thats how far down she can reach in you.

  63. J.... A....

I remember this performance. Trisha Yearwood had a good blend with her Mary if you notice she has a larger background role at this specific performance. A lot of great singers on that stage for this song.

  64. M.... M....

I had the privilege of seeing MCC when she released “C’mon, C’mon” about 1993. It may still be my favorite concert ever with a solo female artist and that album has nary a poor song on it. “Passionate Kisses”, “ He Thinks He’ll Keep Her”, “ I Feel Lucky”, “Only a Dream”, “I Am a Town”, “ I Take My Chances” and the title song..... it was a warm summer night in Philly and Chapin was at the top of her game along with the late John Jennings. I remember that show because my wife hadn’t really been exposed to her music prior, and she left a certified fan. What I remember most is the way she reduced me to tears twice during the show — when telling the story that eventually evolved into “Only a Dream” and then when she closed with “C’mon, C’mon” — one of the most poignant stories about love and loss ever put on vinyl. She had a really good run in the ‘90s and I still listen to her now. Thank you, Chapin..... gotta love a Jersey Girl.

  65. d.... b....

There is another performance of this song on a CMA awards show, that was posted awhile back and apparently has been removed. Yearwood, Loveless, Boggus and maybe Rosanne Cash sang backup. It's actually a better version than this one; more emotionally charged.
If anybody can post that video, it would be appreciated by a lot of folks!

  66. r.... b....

    Patty Loveless is fucking gorgeous

  67. i.... L....

That Is Totally A Karen. I know its not her name, and I do Still Love the Song, But It's 2019, and Memes are everywhere, and She Is A Karen

  68. L.... p....

I'd like to have Jerry Douglas, Mark O' Conner and John Jennings in my band!

  69. B.... G....

This is a wonderfully sad song, a conviction of our male dominated culture !

  70. s.... ....

People call this a anthem for feminism? That’s fine, but remember the last set of lyrics. Women left a wealthy husband and “perfect” family and kids because she got board and felt under appreciated. OK, she had no skills marrying young and being sheltered by the man. So then she got to work at minimum wage alone for 15 years. Was the grass really greener you ungrateful “hero” lol?

    s.... ....

The lyrics are a bit more clever than you give them credit for. "For fifteen years she had a job and not one raise in pay" That refers to her 15 years as a housewife, making zero. "Now she's in the typing pool at minimum wage" Minimum wage was a step up from a wage of nothing.

  71. R.... S....

What a Song, what a Backup, what a Guitar Solo played By Great John Jennings (RIP)

  72. '.... ....

'90s country....it can't be beat. I'll take it every day of the week over garbage like Blake Shelton, et.al.

  73. D.... S....

It don't get much better than that. I miss 90's country music.

  74. N.... ....

That is a straight up row of 90's country hotness.

  75. r.... b....

    this is absolutely fantastic

  76. D.... Y....

    very good...

  77. D.... V....

Now that is a stage full of Beauty & Talent

  78. B.... S....

A moment ...... The Great Ladies of Country .... Then and for all time...

  79. P.... R....

Mary Chapin Carpinter, one of the most under appreciated female singers to ever grace the stage with her incredible talent.

  80. H.... K....

Music is Timeless....still love this to this day

  81. m.... l....

Mary Chapin Carpenter surrounded herself with Nashville's top female talent, while playing John Lennon's guitar.

  82. s.... P....

    Emmylou Harris love her boots!

  83. B.... W....

    Love this song ❤❤❤

  84. L.... T....

Those were the days when women were strong and didn't need to be told they were strong. Those were the women of the hard life generation, not the teens and adults today that cry about everything and think they are entitled to everything.

  85. b.... L....

Just a great song ❤❤....going to leave at that and forget the women's national anthem and that crap......such a great collection of talent on one stage......
    Luv you Kathy Mattea 😍😍

  86. S.... G....

    ❤. love this song

  87. c.... ....

SUPERB. Great song, great band. They lay down a really solid groove that just drives the song hard without making it "heavy". And that army of "backup" singers (all of who are lead singers!) and one simply magical element: Carpenter's unbridled joy at being up there delivering that song. You can see it on her face. She is just so happy to be singing.

  88. t.... d....

A Choir and Band of Angels...this one always gets the Gals up and Rockin'...and so appropriately...the ladies put up with our bull...within reason...but don't push her too far...

  89. R.... B....

Man there's a whole lot of talent on that stage right there...

  90. B.... C....

Amazing song sung by the best of the best! FANTASTIC!

  91. m.... ....

the golden days of country-folkrock. What a great song. This era- whatever it was- was the best ever. How I used to love listening to the country stations back then. Bring it back!

  92. o.... ....

well, KISS MY ASS YOU BITCHES! this is a VERY GOOD SONG BUT you fucking broads need an EDUCATION TO THE FACTS OF TRUTH!- BUT I aint got time to learn ya!.lolol gotta go find some pussy......

    o.... ....

What the fuck are you talking about. douchebag?

  93. S.... H....

    Great song and fine vidio.

  94. S.... P....

    I love Mary's guitar.

  95. A.... S....

So much beauty, grace, and talent on stage at one time! Absolutely awesome!

  96. W.... R....

Had forgotten that song and what a good tune it is.

  97. r.... D....

    Wonderful memories

  98. s.... ....

Just another example of whining, complaining, cry-baby women. Wow you had to struggle driving kids to school, making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches while men were out making America great. Really tough gig. Boo hoo. Go out and get a real job.
