Mary Chapin Carpenter - Goodbye Again Lyrics

Every night she sleeps alone
And by her bed she puts the phone
And every morning after that
She takes the phone and puts it back

He's got a wife back home and three kids up and grown
But these are things that go unsaid
He might call her from the road just in time to say hello
And goodbye again

She keeps his picture tucked away
She thinks she'll have it framed one day
And maybe he'll come see it there
Hanging by her rocking chair

In a corner of her room on a Sunday afternoon
When all the world is dull and gray
She might close her eyes and sit, rocking gently for a bit
Till all the bad thoughts go away

Back when children played their games
London Bridge and Jesse James
She captured flags, she bounced the ball
And every time, she beat them all

And now she comes home to a cat in a three-room walk-up flat
And plays a game of solitaire
Well she made a fist last night, and she broke the hallway light
And the pieces scattered everywhere

You see, he's got a wife back home and three kids up and grown
But these are things that go unsaid
He might call her from the road just in time to say hello
And goodbye again

Her most underrated song. This is pretty much flawless. Amazing how she can get to what she wants to get across.

Another fantastic MCC masterpiece. A carefully observed melancholic song about the "other woman". She sleeps alone, although as a child every time she beat them all, but now plays a game of solitaire. And as another poster observed the helpless, despairing anger that inflicted damage to the hallway light freezes your blood.

So lovely ... I don't recall hearing it before. Thank you for posting it. I was posting a photographic image and the title stuck in my head ... when I googled, your YouTube link came up. I'm so glad it did. I just purchased the song on iTunes and am playing it over and lover. If you're interested, it's on Fine Art America. Lois Bryan ... Goodbye Again. Sorry, I'd include a link, but YouTube doesn't seem to want me to do that. Thank you again.

I love this song and she sings it perfectly.

  21. C.... ....

this song cames from 'State from the Heart' CD (released 1989) cut 8; Jesus !!, she was young for that time but with the great voice always. I like MCC very much

MCC is the ONLY singer of any genre whose album I would buy without hearing a single song. I find her to be that good of a singer; her songwriting skill are absolutely awesome!

The piano chords in the background remind me of "I am a Town", which is another haunting portrait of loneliness and longing. I love MCC's upbeat songs as well, but she has a way of tapping into melancholy that very few artists can do without going overboard. Even though the songs are sad, they're still cathartic in a way, rather than morose or draining. She's amazing.

So glad to find this, thank you!

Without a doubt, Mary's finest song.......and I love everything she produces.

Garnet Rogers version comes close, but no one can tell it like Mary.

"She made a fist last night....then broke the hallway light".......doesn't it make your blood run cold?
