Marvelettes, The - I'll Keep Holding On Lyrics

I'll keep on holdin' on, oh yes I will, I'll keep on holdin' on
I know that you're the kind of guy, you've got too much pride
You're scared to love someone, run and hide
Each and every day, and each and every way
My love is growin' stronger
And I know that you can't hold on much longer
When there's no place left to hide
I'll still be by your side
'Cause I'll be, waiting, oh yes, sure 'nough
Looking for a chance, a chance to make you mine

I'll keep on holdin' on
I know you're braggin' to your friends that you can't be caught
Baby, you don't know, so it's time that you were taught
So love, you'd better plan to make your final stand
No matter where you run now
I'll hold on till my will to resist is gone
Till I get you where I want you
There, love, I'm gonna want you
Waiting, oh yes, sure 'nough
Looking for a chance, a chance to make you mine

I'll keep on holdin' on, no matter where you run, boy
I'll keep on holdin' on, no matter where you hide, boy
I'll keep on holdin' on, oh you'll never get away, boy
I'll keep on holdin' on

Not sure if this has already been mentioned in the 300 comments, but just in case it hasn't.... This was covered in the UK by Paul Weller's favourite group The Action. Wasn't a hit for them either unfortunately.

Now that about Paul Weller, I didn't know Stephen, this track by The Marvelettes was certainly very popular anyway. Cheers. JOHN

Certainly was! They were so perfect in their singing weren't they? A very favourite group here in the 60's I've always loved them! Cheers, JOHN

  3. d.... w....

the marvelettes... lucky to have 2 lead singers, gladys and wanda both super vocalists, shame berry gordy didnt see the talent florence ballard had as the supremes had so much more to offer than diana ross

    d.... w....

    MotownMagic1959 to divine williams
Yes, that was certainly true, The Marvelettes were certainly all talented, and in the beginning when The Supremes were The Primettes Florence Ballard was the lead singer!! Berry was very fond of Diana as many will know! I thank you. 👍🏻 JOHN

    d.... w....

@John G Byrne well, florence wasnt the only lead singer in the early days, the leads were shared depending on the type of song, florence was soulful, mary was great on bluesey and ballads, diana was great on the light more pop type stuff. she was perfect for the songs HDH were writing for them, but both mary and florence should have been allowed more leads

    d.... w....

    MotownMagic1959 to @divine williams

That's very interesting, that's very true, they were certainly very talented weren't they? It's a bit like the Temptations only they DID change leads didn't they? Opportunities missed indeed. Thanks for that Divine. JOHN

  4. J.... R....

what is a vandella, just thinking. Great band.

  5. R.... H....

One of those amazing groups that never made a poor or ordinary record and never sang a dud note. Wonderful loved this then and still do now .

    R.... H....

    MotownMagic1959 to Richard Harries
Yes, I often like to look back and we'll remember those times, Richard, even if you're too young to remember the 60's it was a really great time for music eh? I'll always have fond memories of those days. Cheers, JOHN

    R.... H....

@John G Byrne If you google rcpoms plus Motown you will see my poem on the subject!

  6. b.... ....

Marvelettes classic should have been a #1 Blockbuster but didn't receive exposure, had 45rpm played endlessly and blazing Motown Anthem still sounds great today, better than anything on the radio now with a dynamo driving rhythm & passionate soulful vocal hits a home run...

  7. S.... k....

I'm 21 and love these oldies thanks mom dad lol

I'm so pleased to read that Samori, it's so nice to know that someone appreciates the sounds from Motown that I did when I was the same age!! I remember the enormous efforts they always put into producing perfection as Berry Gordy used to encourage competition between producers. Thanks for that. JOHN

Yes, Tanya, I don't think The Marvelettes will ever go out of date eh? This was a big hit in that time too, I remember! Cheers, JOHN

  11. D.... B....

Another atmospheric one from Motown that to this day makes the hairs at the back of neck stand up thanks for posting john !!!

  12. R.... V....

One of my personal favorites from the Marvelous Marvelettes! Wanda Rogers sings her heart out on this track and I still cannot believe that these Motown pioneers are not in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame!

    R.... V....

    MotownMagic1959
How very right you are Robert! I do miss them a lot today, as they were like The Velvelettes, outstanding! but sadly forgotten a lot! eh? "Please, Mr Postman" August 1961, "Twistin' Postman" December 1961, "Beechwood 4-5789" July 1962, "Too Many Fish In The Sea" August 1964," "I'll Keep Holding On" May 1965, "Danger, Heartbreak Dead Ahead" July 1965, "Don't Mess With Bill" November 1965, "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" December 1966, "When You're Young And In Love" April 1967, "My Baby Must Be A Magician" November 1967, I picked just a few of my favorite originals from Motown's TAMLA catalogue Robert, they recorded so many really good singles didn't they? Thanks again Robert for your nice comment. :-) JOHN

  13. S.... ....

MY FAVORITE SONG, BY THE MARVELETTES, BY FAR.

    S.... ....

    Sylvester MotownMagic1959
You certainly know how to pick the best there, Sylvester, thank you for listening to these great songs and of course The Marvelettes. Maybe you would like along with anyone who likes The Marvelettes, about a dozen more by them that I added over the years, in the search above, just add my prefix numbers eh? MM019, MM032, MM038, MM043, MM048, MM055, MM164, MM168, HD#401, HD#554, HD#569, and HD#589, they should work! 👍🏾 😃 Cheers, JOHN

    S.... ....

    Sylvester MotownMagic1959
    PS
If anyone has a problem with finding my additions, like say MM038, try putting MM038.TheMarvelettes with a dot after the number plus TheMarvelettes without a space and squashed up, the search is VERY specific to the original that I've added, and on the oldest MM prefix I had to squeeze the title in when In the early days!! 🙂 I thank you. JOHN

  14. T.... p....

Damn I didn't know Detroit Cobras weren't the original authors!

    T.... p....

This profile picture is totally not original
    MotownMagic1959
I'm baffled by this comment, as I know the picture is certainly The Marvelettes members, I should know after more than 50 years! So Please explain more detail my friend? JOHN

    T.... p....

Well a rock band called The Detroit cobras made a cover of this song in 1998, which I really like, and for a long time I thought that their version was the original one, and not the Marvelette's one! So as I was searching for "I'll keep holding on" on the research bar I stumbled upon this video, and this is how I learned about it.

    T.... p....

This profile picture is totally not original
    MotownMagic1959
Ah! Now I see, apologies, I misunderstood what you meant! 🤔 this recording is certainly the original indeed, I'll be surprised if you didn't know of "Please, Mr Postman" from The Marvelettes in 1961 or "When You're Young And In Love" in 1967 for example, there are so many by this amazing group over the years, many thanks my unknown friend for that one. Cheers, JOHN

    T.... p....

Sorry if I didn't explain correctly! Cheers to you too

    T.... p....

This profile picture is totally not original
    MotownMagic1959
Yes, I'm glad you liked the song even though it was not from The Marvelettes! It was written by Motown writers William "Mickey" Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter too! 😀 just shows that even The Beatles recorded some Motown songs in those times!! JOHN

  15. N.... G....

    Ooh, they were so sweet.

    N.... G....

    Nice Guy MotownMagic1959
Weren't they just? Great songs too eh? Cheers, JOHN

    N.... G....

@John G Byrne I didn't know how young they were when they started. Pretty amazing.

    N.... G....

    Nice Guy MotownMagic1959
I think that applied to Motown in general in the early 60's, take Stevie Wonder for example he was called "Little Stevie Wonder" as he was only 13 when he first made those singles, even The Supremes as The Primettes were very young then! A great story behind every record don't you think? JOHN

  16. J.... C....

    Outstanding, timeless song!

    J.... C....

    John Crenshaw Jr. MotownMagic1959
Indeed it is, John, remembering all their hits, in the 60's they certainly became "timeless" songs eh? It can be very nostalgic of those times!! JOHN

  17. G.... R....

I remember dancing with a girl I had a crush on at a house party to this song.

    G.... R....

    MotownMagic1959
It's so good when you hear songs that remind you of an event from years ago isn't it? that's the magic of music isn't it? glad it reminded you Gerald, and thanks for your comment! Cheers, JOHN

  18. j.... s....

What a killer bassline/drum in this one!

  19. s.... d....

    HEY NOW

    s.... d....

    MotownMagic1959
Not THE Sammy Davis? I bet you've heard that one millions of times? This was such a hit for The Marvelettes in those days! Cheers, JOHN

  20. k.... w....

I love this but I bet if Martha Reeves had sung it, it would have been a huge hit. It has a Vandellas sound, rather than a Marvalettes.

    k.... w....

    MotownMagic1959
Now that's fascinating as I wouldn't mind betting that Martha has a copy in the vaults!! they had a practice of recording a song amongst the artists quite often, they all tried to do their upmost best in those times. Mind you I still loved The Marvelettes brilliance also. Thanks Kirby. JOHN

  21. w.... ....

This is one of those special tracks that pulls me back to the age on innocence, I was 14 when this
was a hit and whenever I hear it I go right back there once again! More Marvelettes' Magic!

    w.... ....

Yes, I was 4 years old in1965 back then, My mother use to play Motown in the house all the time.

  22. M.... B....

How I loved the Marvelettes. Their performance on stage was superb. They did that house party dance. I miss those days at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia. The D Jays in those days were great. R.I.P. Georgie Woods the guy with the goods

    M.... B....

    MotownMagic1959
It certainly brings back memories of a great time doesn't it, Maxine? I'm so glad you enjoyed those brilliant Marvelettes, I was always a great fan of them, such superb music they produced! I wish they were around today!! I have added quite a lot of their records on here also. Thank you for adding that comment Maxine :-) Cheers, JOHN

  23. L.... W....

    a true up beat classic

    L.... W....

    MotownMagic1959
It was indeed Lois, a great hit in it's day I well remember, I was always a big fan of The Marvelettes, they rarely made a bad record, eh? I miss them a lot nowadays, I wish they were still there making those brilliant records, ;-) like all the other Motown artists, when you fancy a change, you can look up my collection on here can't you? :-) Cheers, Lois, JOHN

  24. R.... E....

  25. M.... H....

Far better singer than Diana Ross

    M.... H....

    Mike Hughes
    MotownMagic1959
I used to like all The Marvelettes, they never made a bad record I thought! Thanks Mike. JOHN

    M.... H....

Almost every female singer at Motown was better than Ross in my opinion

    M.... H....

@Denis Boswell Prob not wrong there hahaha

  26. M.... M....

Should've been a huge hit, but it was pushed aside by Motown in favor of new Supremes single "Nothing But Heartaches."

  27. S.... o....

A great song by a very talented group. The song has been recorded by others over time and I don't think there ever was a bad version by anyone.

    S.... o....

    MotownMagic1959
This is their original recording, and it was written and produced by the great, William "Mickey" Stevenson and Ivy "Jo" Hunter do you know I've never heard it by any other person too!! but as you say it's a great song and I well remember just how popular it was back in the 60's. Thank you for that Sands of time, :-) Cheers, JOHN

    S.... o....

+John G Byrne Thanks John, for the get back. I didn't know who wrote the lyrics for this song. The lyrics are simple, nothing fancy ,just excellent with a great hook. Those years (60's) were magic ,new music every week, we thought the party would last forever. I hope you have a safe happy holiday season

  28. S.... G....

From 1:34 to 1:50 is worth it for me. .

  29. M.... C....

    Fantastic The Marvelettes.

  30. t.... p....

my favorite marvelets song .dident get the attention it should have.

    t.... p....

    Sam Tenuto MotownMagic1959
Yes, one of their great favourites with most people in the 60's indeed Sam. Thank you for listening in! JOHN

  31. v.... ....

I was singing along, and suddenly realized how borderline "stalker-ish" the lyrics are.
"No matter where you hide"... "You'll never get away". :o

  32. w.... ....

It's obvious Diana Ross had B. Gordy's ear and The Marvelettes would never get promoted  fairly. More
    talented than the Supremes IMO!

    w.... ....

"Never get promoted fairly" is an exaggeration" The Marvelettes were the company's first star group and were heavily promoted from their debut in 1961 until the Supremes hit big in 1964.

    w.... ....

Why do people always make the other artist at Motown a victim of Diana and Berry ...no way in the world was the marvellettes better then the Supremes...stop scapegoating Diana..
She took everyone at Motown to another level...and open doors that everyone st the label walked through...hater

    w.... ....

@Mic ... many people do this because it's hard for fans of other groups to believe that the groups themselves could possibly be partly responsible themselves for their lack of success. It's easier to blame it on Diana. People also think the music industry is a democracy where everyone has a fair chance. Motown was Berry Gordy's company. He set the direction of the company. If anyone is to be blamed it should be him, not another singer.

    w.... ....

Martha and Vandellas/ Marvellettes were MUCH better singers than the Supremes,...

    w.... ....

    I agree 💯😇👍 Whole 💓 ly

As I've said before, The Marvelettes, have never made a bad record as far as I am concerned, they were always surprisingly good, going right the way back to the beginning of Motown. JOHN

  37. b.... ....

Fiery passionate performance from Wanda is hauntingly brilliant, truly classic Motown at it finest!!!

    b.... ....

    MotownMagic1959
You couldn't get better than The Marvelettes could you? Wanda was a brilliant singer too wasn't she? sadly no longer here. I'll always have a fondness for them. John

    Wanda is still alive.

    MotownMagic1959
I'm back from the holidays, and thanks Andy for that, those girls had such great sounds in their day didn't they? Sad that they are not all around today! What a voice Wanda had, so distinctive on The Marvelettes eh? Many thanks for that m8! JOHN

  39. B.... I....

Yes john,I was too young to enjoy Motown and Stax in it's prime but those classics by Otis,Marvin Gaye,Booker T,the Supremes will always stand the test of time!!!!

    B.... I....

    MotownMagic1959
Yes William all that matters is if you like them of course, and they stand the test of time don't they? yes, I go back as long as Motown does, and like me, it's still going ha! ha! :-) JOHN

    B.... I....

@John G Byrne my all time favorite soul singer john was Sam Cooke,my Mother was a fan of his early on and had me listening to him when I was real young,a unique and extremely talented singer who died way too young,I wish someone in Hollywood would so a biopic of Sam,but the unsavory way he died would make for a very sad ending.

    B.... I....

    MotownMagic1959
I'm surprised they haven't made a film about Sam Cook, William, I think it was his girlfriend who shot him if I remember?? he was a superb singer indeed. JOHN

  40. B.... I....

    Long live Motown(and Stax also!!!!!)

    B.... I....

    MotownMagic1959
Yes indeed, I was a fan of Stax too in the 60's! Booker T & The MG's, Otis Redding, etc a little Motown in Memphis, Tennessee, eh? and what can you say about Motown, I still hear the songs on TV adverts, but versions usually (not as good!) Good days! JOHN

  43. t.... ....

One of three incredibly dark, moody, funky singles (among others) that this great group recorded, this one composed by the same songwriting team that wrote "Dancin' In the Street" for Martha and the Vandellas.
(The astonishing rhythm section layin' it down is The Funk Bros., of course.)
By my reckoning, this is Musique Noire.

    t.... ....

    +tuxguys MotownMagic1959
I've always thought they were outstanding, along with those great writers, I wonder if there's a track I've added that you've not heard? it's great when you hear one that you've never heard before isn't it? I've got 24 by The Marvelettes on here too! :-) so you're welcome to listen to them. Apart from Holland, Dozier, and Holland, my favs were, James Dean and William Weatherspoon, William "Smokey" Robinson, Ivy "Joe" Hunter, William "Mickey" Stevenson, Barrett Strong, and Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, amongst others. Thanks for that. JOHN

  44. R.... V....

This song by the Marvelettes in 1965 was not a big song but in their live shows in the 1960's always sang this song!

The Marvelettes were one of Motown's greatest groups and Freddie Gorman of The Originals wrote their first hit, "Please Mr Postman" did you know he was once a postman??  So many thanks Adrian it's a lively jolly tune isn't it, as are most of Motown's great songs.  JOHN

  60. K.... B....

Three musicians stand out here...Benny Benjamin's bass drum-heavy, rock solid rhythm, James Jamerson's gliding bass guitar line, and Jack Ashford's crisp, snapping tambourine accents. All while The Marvelettes handle a tricky, two-level vocal well!

    K.... B....

    MotownMagic1959
Indeed, the magical talent of all those Funk Brothers along with the equally magical Marvelettes, rarely heard nowadays, but occasionally I hear it on the radio here in the UK where it was very popular in the mid 60's as many will remember. :-)  Just think, and all in that tiny "Snakepit" ha! ha! that was Studio A (Hitsville U.S.A.)  JOHN

Yeah. Seriously. Why ain't this ever on oldies stations?! It's a sin!

    M.... M....

Gutless, powerless PDs and MDs who don't even do their own music reporting-some consultant somewhere, who is also clueless about classic music, does it for them. Hell, I could sit down right now and program an all-MOTOWN station and not repeat a hit for days-this Marvelettes song would certainly be on my playlist.

What a great sound and song. The Marvelettes version is the best  by far.The Action's version is pretty good, though can't compare to this. The Chords' (mod, punk outfit of the seventies) take on this song doesn't make it for me at all.

I had this record YEARS after it was a hit.  I played this at a party once when I was a teenager and everybody loved it, though they didn't know who it was.  ("This is the Marvelettes?  It's so aggressive.")

Yes this has been popular for years, they made so many really great recordings I thought but were not as appreciated as I reckon they should have been! Thanks for that. JOHN

From the comments, it seems that some who say "we love Motown" expend a lot of energy trying to rewrite the story to damage reputations unfairly and constantly want to pit artist against artist.  Fifty years later, they insist that legendary artists have less talent than others despite the reality that the "less talented" artists sold more records, have more chart success, sold more tickets, became more famous and more imitated and sustained careers decades longer than the others "who were better."  Some also love to criticize Mr. Gordy and blame him for cheating artists or preventing them from greater stardom.  A closer look, though, shows that the artists' own decisions, erratic behavior and limited appeal had far more to do with their career disappointments.  I love Mary Wells, but blaming Mr. Gordy for her lack of international stardom is ludicrous.  After her initial hits, it was Ms. Wells who left Motown and Mr. Gordy -- she thought her career too big and the company too small to guarantee her greater success.  Mr. Gordy did not choose Diana Ross over Ms. Wells.  Ms. Wells made the decision to leave, and then found that those other companies were unable to showcase her as Motown could.  At the end of her life, it was Mr. Gordy, Ms. Ross and a few others who quietly gave her considerable monetary gifts to ensure her care.  Motown produced great music, created a unique sound, and found and developed stars -- wisely providing them each with specific trademark styles.  Instead of endless accusations and dramatic reinventions, we should just celebrate the music, the artists and the forward-thinking man who spun it all into pure gold.

Fantastic comment. Maybe Gordy made 2 or 3 mistakes but who doesn't. It was too much talent at the same time at the same spot.

Kenneth and Frankie, if I may add my comment, as that's exactly what I've always thought, the number of times I've heard about instances of Berry helping former artists, and even though nobody is perfect, there were some dispute problems with The Isley Brothers wanting to be paid quicker in those days!! there was much more of a family like atmosphere at Hitsville then, especially as Berry's relations were all involved with helping in some way, as you said Frankie, there was SO MUCH going on at the same time, I don't know how they managed it all to be honest, anyway, it resulted in all those hit records, all down to the Motown family eh?  Cheers,  JOHN

A wonderful record and it was noticed by all the disc jockeys and got great radio play.  But it was not a big hit.  It is a mystery.

    W.... B....

MotownMagic1959Yes, they rarely made a bad record did they, in those days?  Thanks for listening to them too!  JOHN

    @John G Byrne
Because I was a journalist writing about Motown, and knew people in the company, I got to hear a lot of unreleased records.  I was always proud I never let anyone listen to them, never copied them, never sold them and would have returned them if asked.  I was never asked.  I did liner notes for one Marvelettes album that never got released.  I was sent a tape of the album but was never asked to return it.  It was a collection of singles.  What amazed me was the TONS of unreleased Motown music that was every bit as brilliant as what WAS released and that includes the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas Live at the Copa album which was sensational.  I do believe one day it will be released.

    W.... B....

Yes.  It mystifies me, too.  I consider this a classic of the era.

    W.... B....

You really can not appreciate the brilliance of a lot of Motown music without a decent 1st class sound system. Transistor radios , car radios, and compact vinyl players will do justice to the majority of Motown recordings. I think that is why there is a more appreciation of Motown music today because people today are now hearing it as it sounded in the studio when it was recorded.

One of my favorites! I was 14 in '65 and me and a buddy would sneak into an r&b soul club across the street from The Whiskey on The Sunset Strip and the place would JAM when this came on! I just got back from NYC to see Motown the Musical on Broadway...IT WAS FANTASTIC!! and a must see for every Motown fan when it comes to your area!

Brilliant song by The Marvelettes. Played every time at Heywood Civic motown nights and always packs the floor. Last time, I was sitting with about eight 25 year old girls and they all said they wished they'd been around when this stuff was first released back in the 60's. Have to admit, that's not what I was thinking ha ha!!
    Keep the faith, people!
