Martyn, John - Hold Me Lyrics

You don't need, you don't need anybody
Nobody but me
I don't need, I don't need anybody
Nobody but you
You don't need to say you love me
You don't need to say that much
You don't need to say you love me
Cos I can tell by your tender touch

You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life
You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life

I don't need your conversation
I don't need your soul to sympathize
I can feel the sweetest sensations
Falling down just behind your eyes

You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life
You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life

Some days I walk in my own shadow
I do wish I had a walk to water life
Never feel my spirit freezing down that low
You can come drive away my darkness
You can make my life shine

You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life
You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life

You don't need to say you love me
You don't need to say that much
You never need to say you love me
I can tell by that tender touch

You're the one to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life
I want you just to hold me
You're the one to hold all my life

You don't need, you don't need anybody
Nobody but me
I don't need, I don't need anybody
Nobody but you

Great song, fine singer.never tire of it!

  2. T.... D....

    Beautiful!

  3. T.... G....

Oh man, where does the f---g time go. Johns curly hair, youthful complexion, Uni concert nights on a Friday or Saturday, pints allowed on the floor, John surrounded by spliff smoke, mostly coming from him. The sounds this man made with one guitar. You had to be there. F---g time.

  4. B.... B....

    Love the way this swings

  5. P.... e....

I discover this today, thanks to Ben Howard. This performance is almost my age, so the question is where was I ? This tune wait for me since to long.

  6. c.... ....

    Beautiful

  7. j.... w....

    😁😥😁😥😁😥

  8. s.... l....

JM:Unforgettable. Still so influential to many & just as impressive today as yesterday....truly a well deserved recognition for both his acoustic guitar style, emotive vocal accompaniment and a song writer of the agony & ecstasy of love.....Unique &Timeless!

  9. O.... ....

Looking forward to see newcomers to this video when a new trendy TV show uses this song. My guess is season 3 of Succession.

  10. S.... S....

World's a lesser place without you in it mate.
Your music thru my life has been both a pleasure and a privilege, thanks John.
    RIP mate.

  11. J.... L....

What’s wrong with this fuckin world. It wasn’t the most amazing song of all time, the guitar playing was cool, the message ran deep, so rappers wanting to kill their mothers and smack their bitches takes precedence over this skilfully written song.Wake up you fucking clowns.Take life on without drugs, paranoia and intimidating people who just want to get through the day without meeting the fucking lot of you.Thers is another world out there!

  12. S.... B....

    Genius.

  13. o.... n....

My son is being born in the morning and I'm gonna sing him this. Especially the last bit ;) x

  14. j.... ....

    MAY YOU NEVER

  15. D.... W....

    For john gibbons x

  16. N.... G....

Personally I think this is his best live performance of this song, thankfully it was recorded.

  17. A.... W....

This guy was fucking beautiful and an awesome guitarist God bless him.💓

  18. P.... B....

    ❤️☯️🙏

  19. P.... S....

I seen him live in the back of a pub in Manchester

  20. J.... M....

Wow! A girl friend years ago used to go on about this guy. I never understood why until I watched this

    J.... M....

    She was probably a keeper!

  21. D.... C....

Martyn was the kind of guy who could purr like a kitten at some times, and roar like a ferocious lion at others. Great artist!

  22. j.... j....

Linda Lewis does a fantastic version of this song

  23. D.... W....

Love him and Gordon Lightfoot! Both of whom I discovered in my 50's , my roots are in Punk Rock! dx

  24. M.... Y....

I love this. I search for the non standard genius in music. Finding out he is a contemporary of Nick Drake also makes the way he plays his music and how he made it more relevant. Non- standard tunings and the use of the capo. Pure genius.

    M.... Y....

He wrote this song about Nick. Worth a listen https://youtu.be/O8Blccc0PM0

  25. O.... M....

A great clip, nicely filmed & showing johns playing, ( totally different to how I was taught it ) ! Towards the end of his life he had become an ‘Oliver Reed’ sort of character, a victim of the booze & god knows what else...saw him @ Exeter Phoenix just before he died, his son was doing the sound & kept turning his guitar level down, should’ve seen the killer looks his dad was giving him ! Finished the concert with a duet with the gal from Portishead ( Beth Orton) ? Totally stunning, another of our tragic musical giants who passed too soon.
BTW Loved his live albums with Danny Thompson.......R.I.P. JOHN

  26. p.... ....

    r.i.p. John Martyn

  27. B.... B....

What a great finger style guitarist. That sort of playing ain't easy while singing, he makes it look effortless. Super stuff!

  28. S.... M....

    this song is truly magical

  29. D.... D....

    🦋🙏🍷💓🔥💓🍷🙏🦋

  30. D.... B....

@scotsraindog - are you making money from your upload??

  31. R.... W....

Life advice..... a beautiful song with great playing.

  32. m.... ....

Love this song, love this performance!

  33. T.... h....

    Amazing!!!!

  34. K.... S....

AbSOULlutely awesome rendition of a song I have been forgetting! I did not know he wrote it, I must have heard other versions. Great song!

  35. R.... W....

just come across this song, and remember it being done on a LINDA LEWIS album.both versions superb,I was a big linda lewis fan

    R.... W....

Had a check of the Linda Lewis version.
Don't be insulted but I think because you were used to that version first, you're hearing it through rosey coloured headphones.

There's just no comparison, I'm afraid.
    Cheers,
    .G.

  36. j.... ....

A personal anthem to me by a great artist gone too soon.

  37. l.... s....

Well, we know there's at least 263 people out there who are managing to survive without a brain.

  38. R.... W....

Wonderful artist and great song, this means more to you when your older, esspecialy if you are sick and the department of social security have been trying their best to make you make your bed out in the cold

    R.... W....

@scotsraindog :I can sympathize completely, I bet you worked all your life too just like me.There was a huge expense involved becaue there were a lot of peopl not working and claiming sickness but even their own estimates were only 5%, so to stop that 5% they had to treat us with so little respect. 3 years ago I missed a letter and didnt attent a examination, I didnt even know they had stopped it until the day I should have got my benefit, The jobcenter staff didnt know what they were doing and instead of telling me to sign for jobseekers {the only choice I had} they just siad there was nothing for me to do until I had an examination and I nothing to live on for 3 months!, nothing, your friends and family just cant grasp it at first so help was late in coming, it nearly killed me, just as well a friend of mine has a shop or I would have starved {silly I know but I wouldnt just was too proud to ask for help, well you dont do you when you have always worked and I would rather starve than go to a food bank, that is no reflection on anyonewho does go to a food bank, Im just old and stubborn} I didnt even tell my friend who has the shop until 4 days later lol.

    R.... W....

The mad thing about it is at my 2 assessment they put me in the support group part of ESA, which means that they accept that I'll never work again, but still get that brown envelope every 18 months or so.

    R.... W....

@scotsraindog : Yes I know, they also put many people in the wrong group for months and then say it was a mistake. I was put onto one of their new work programs, it was an awful place, no talking, poor older people sitting at computers who didnt have a clue what to do withthem. The best part......all run by agencies and when they placed someone on a zero hours contract for a couple of weeks the DOWP gave them.....wait for it.................£2,000 , a licence to print money Can you believe that, NONE of them has ever hit even their smallest promise of jobs for people not even their revised targets but they still collected all those 2 grands

    R.... W....

I've been on morphine of varying strengths for over 8 years now, also Pregabalin / Gabapentin for about 5. All they do is take the edge off the pain, most of the time. Can walk about 20 feet before it gets too much, and I'm only 52. But still I'd bet my bottom dollar that in about 11 months it will start all over again.

    R.... W....

@scotsraindog Thats just crazy my friend, what do they think you take the morphine for?. That really is a disgrace, we pay into this to see that people who are too ill to work dont have to have an awful life through no fault of their own . They are really damaging people and they are not saving any of the money, it is one of the worst things I have ever heard of in this Country. It is worse when druggies and drunks get MORE because of their addiction

  39. t.... ....

If this isn't the PUREST music video on Youtube... well, then I don't know what is. His ex-wife was right. He WAS an absolutely beautiful man, in his youth. Boy. Look at that peaches and cream complexion that most women would KILL for. A face, and voice, like an angel. Before the booze and drugs took their toll 40 years of hard road later...

  40. C.... M....

I saw him play on a boat on the Clyde in Glasgow -+ 2001,small show,I was hooked. Love his voice, even my dad loves his songs, and he's 82!!

    C.... M....

I'm pretty sure I was at that gig, it was on the old Renfrew Ferry.
Not 100% on the year but 2001 sounds about right.

  41. C.... M....

fantastic, I wish I was born in his time!

  42. D.... H....

This is one of the best and beautiful songs written by this man. I love the song and the lyrics. Brilliant

  43. J.... B....

It hits directly your heart deep inside, such an immense artist

  44. v.... w....

    ❤ A beautiful song ❤

  45. R.... ....

    Magical

  46. p.... b....

    Utterly magical

  47. g.... m....

i "sang" this to my children when they were wee . seemed to have a calming effect despite my dodgy vocals. JM has a calming effect on me, just wonderful

  48. H.... M....

i played this at my husband's funeral. it was just russ though and through. so sweet and kind.

  49. u.... ....

wat kinda horrible piece of $h!t would vote this down?

  50. i.... ....

Try listening to his version on the Transatlantic Sessions with Kathy Mattea. Worth a listen, along with a couple other songs by him.

  51. B.... R....

If you listen to this while thinking about your dog you will cry

  52. f.... ....

A player that will not ever be replicated

  53. j.... w....

Brilliant guitarist and a great voice. Have a couple of albums from the early 70s of John and his wife Beverly Martyn. The blend of their voices together is haunting.

  54. M.... H....

Sadly missed. Voice of an angel and temper of the devil.

  55. P.... R....

Typical BBC direction , Great guitar playing and 90% of visual is on face NOT guitar . Absolute crap camera work . Direction by director who has no knowledge of music. Dreadful .

  56. M.... ....

Wondrous singing, writing and playing by young John Martyn. In Drop D capo 3 = F. I thought I heard a bass player on this track, but it was just John.

  57. M.... K....

I have never heard of this man before.

  58. C.... Z....

I just heard it for the first time today. Thanks to Ian Rankin and Rebus who got me searching.

    C.... Z....

    Hi,

  59. n.... ....

    M.... K....

I second this about the book, over the years I've found some musician bio's a hard read. This reads really easy, one of those ones that it surprises you how quickly you get to the end.

  62. E.... S....

    Een juweeltje, tijdloos...

  63. M.... H....

I love the expression of love for a friend. I played this at the funeral of a great friend. When I hear or play it her love is in my heart! xxx

    Lyrics

And may you never lay your head down Without a hand to hold May you never make your bed out in the cold You’re just like a great strong brother of mine You know that I love you true And you never talk dirty behind my back And I know that there’s those that do Oh please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind Love is a lesson to learn in our time Now please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind for me And may you never lay your head down Without a hand to hold May you never make your bed out in the cold Well you’re just like a good close sister to me You know that I love you true And you hold no blade to stab me in the back And I know that there’s some that do Oh please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind Love is a lesson to learn in our time And please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind for me May you never lay your head down Without a hand to hold May you never make your bed out in the cold You’re just like a great strong brother of mine And you know that I love you true And you never talk dirty behind my back And I know that there’s those that do Oh please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind Love is a lesson to learn in our time And please won’t you, please won’t you Bear it in mind for me May you never lose your temper If you get in a bar room fight May you never lose your woman overnight May you never lay your head down Without a hand to hold May you never make your bed out in the cold May you never lose your temper If you get in a bar room fight May you never lose your woman over night May you never lose your woman over night May you never lose your woman over night
