Marty Robbins - The Strawberry Roan Lyrics

I was hangin' 'round town, just spendin' my time
Out of a job, not earnin' a dime
A feller steps up and he said, "I suppose
You're a bronc fighter from looks of your clothes."
"You figures me right, I'm a good one." I claim
"Do you happen to have any bad ones to tame?"
Said "He's got one, a bad one to buck
At throwin' good riders, he's had lots of luck."

I gets all het up and I ask what he pays
To ride this old nag for a couple of days
He offered me ten; I said, "I'm your man,
A bronc never lived that I couldn't span."
He said: "Get your saddle, I'll give you a chance"
In his buckboard we hopped and he drives to the ranch
I stayed 'til mornin' and right after chuck
I stepped out to see if this outlaw can buck.

Down in the horse corral standin' alone
Is an old Caballo, a Strawberry Roan
His legs are all spavined, he's got pigeon toes
Little pig eyes and a big Roman nose
Little pin ears that touched at the tip
A big 44 brand was on his left hip
U-necked and old, with a long, lower jaw
I could see with one eye, he's a regular outlaw.

I gets the blinds on 'im and it sure is a fright
Next comes the saddle and I screws it down tight
Then I steps on 'im and I raises the blinds
Get outta the way boys, he's gonna unwind
He sure is a frog-walker, he heaves a big sigh
He only lacks wings, for to be on the fly
He turns his old belly right up to the sun
He sure is a sun-fishin', son-of-a-gun.

He's about the worst bucker I've seen on the range
He'll turn on a Nickel and give you some change
He hits on all fours and goes up on high
Leaves me a spinnin' up there in the sky
I turns over twice and I comes back to earth
I lights in a cussin' the day of his birth
I know there are ponies that I cannot ride
There's some of them left, they haven't all died.

I'll bet all my money, the man ain't alive
That'll stay with Old Strawberry
When he makes his high dive.

  1. Polis Ranger

Played at my grandpa's funeral..still such a bittersweet song for me, but will never not love it.

  2. Minong Maniac

This guy is the best. I'm not even a country or western fan but something about this is so different. Honest.

  3. Yvonne Jarman

My Dad's favourite Marty Robbins song Ever and Me his Daughter loves it as well

  4. Phantom Aviator

I legit had no idea Marty Robbins was from the 50s or 60s, I thought it was a fictional artist in the Fallout universe, but this is amazing.Bethesda may be bad at games, but man they have a taste in music

    Jill Bill

No one could conceive of Robbins.

  8. Angel Emilio Villegas Sanchez

Can someone explain the story? I'm confused because he mentions the Strawberry roan, but then he says he carries a 44 and that he's an outlaw. So, is it a metaphor for a person, or are the 44 and the outlaw stuff metaphors for the roan?

    Jerat Parrino

44 brand on his left hip refers to the ranch he came from

    Colton Walker

The story is about the narrator trying to tame the strawberry roan. The 44 on the horse's hip is a brand to identify him and who he belongs to. The roan is described as an outlaw because of how unruly he is.

  9. John

This album definitely has the theme but to me the songs are strongly metaphorical for various journeys and struggles in life. Universal , if you will. I absolutely love the way with words for this song.

    Minong Maniac

Interesting. Now I am seeing the music from another angle. Thanks!

  10. Dave Taylor

had a stud horse...he was one mean piece of horse flesh...he would even run the dog for no reason...turned him into a bucking horse...he won a few awards for best bucker...they retired him and put him out for stud...raised a few rank colts...he had the lines for meaness

  11. Kathleen Elizabeth Rotherham

Strawberry Roan was my Grandpa Joe's favorite song. We played it at his funeral. I miss him very much.

    a query to the thumbs down patrol;
    WHY did you come here?!

    john citizen

It is a fact that there are many people that absolutely have no appreciation of the voice of Marty and the great way he sang!

  13. Lego Clone

Finally got a horse with a strawberry roan coat in rdr2

  14. Budahbaba

I have only rode horse a few times. But the great thing about this song -aside from Marty Robins -is that by the time you are done with a listening, you are another expert on breaking a horse -all from your arm chair! :)

Such a beautiful piece of poetry!

  15. Tom Servo

I haven't heard 'fcker' used in other songs from this era ...

    Big Ounce

    He says bucker. Not Fucker

  16. Daniel Carlos

Damn I miss music like this.

  17. Doug Piranha

My beaten old copy of this LP is as much surface noise as music, but it's a really good record.

  18. Zomboing

Just so y'all know, it ain't about a horse.

    Zomboing

Just a guy trying to ride a horse.

    Cole [Redacted]

Look up Continental Suit by Marty Robbins.

    TheSparkyWriter

Just literally trying to ride a horse. Always made me think of Chick Bowdrie’s horse from the Louis L’Amour books.

  21. Papita Show

    I feel very cowboy

  22. Dennis The Menace

There are alot of songs that I like to listen to that are just nice and don't say much. But I've like learned shit from Marty Robbins music. Mostly just vocabulary, but any knowledge is good knowledge

  23. Timothy Bowen

    “You figures me right” awesome!

  24. Stan Parkin

I sorta grew up on a farm/ranch. Marty Robbins songs were my favorite country music. This song was one of the best on the "Pink Album", the one where Robbins is pictured derssed in black with a tied down rig on his hip. I would sing this song out loud, to myself of course, no one wanted to hear my kid voice back in the early 60's. Im not a big fan of country music but I loved this LP album by Marty Robbins. I bought it when I was 16 for 2 dollars and I still have the same one now at 74 years old. My wife had the album cover framed and the record framed too, a few years ago as a suprise for me. I loved his music, all of it, and this song was and still is a favorite. Marty Robbins RIP. Thank you

    Budahbaba

Stan, the pink background is funny to me, when as a small child this album was what was reinforcing a whole lot of what my parents were teaching me about masculinity. Nature and Marty Robins never told me that pink was a bad color just because your a man! :)

    derpbuddy gaming

Someone please explain what happens after he sees the outlaw

    Lucius Mang

Im thinking he's referring to the horse he is payed to tame when he says "outlaw"

    Kaiser Wilhelm II

he breaks horses. he gets a job to tame the strawberry roan. the horse is the outlaw because hes never been tamed.

    Scotty Williams

Oh, thats where william s burroughs got the words, "strawberry roan"... in his western-sugestive books this is a reoccurring phrase

    Joza Texan

Roan, strawberry or otherwise, is NOT a breed of horse, it's a color. Even cattle come in roan colors.

2:35 Is he saying what I think he's saying?

    Jessi wyatt Lauppe

When this song was wrote, the f word was not in people's vocabulary like it is in our time.

    Austin Hebison

Even if I never heard this song before “I’d bet all my money” Marty Robbins didn’t say fuck in a song.

    Mark Holtebeck

@Jessi wyatt Lauppe I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure Marty Robbins know exactly what he was saying, and how he said was completely intentional

    Mark Holtebeck

I remember being a kid back in the 70's and clearly hearing it as what we think it is. I'm pretty sure that was intentional, because Marty Robbins was good enough that if he wanted 'Bucker' to heard as "Bucker", he would said B-ucker. He rushed the initial "B" sound, so we hear it as something else. BTW- it's a better song when you hear the way I did when I was younger
