Marty Robbins - Streets Of Laredo Lyrics

As I walked out in the streets of Laredo
As I walked out in Laredo one day
I saw a young cowboy, all dressed in white linen
Dressed in white linen, as cold as the clay

So, beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
Play the Death March as you carry me along
Take me to the green valley, there lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong

Once in the saddle I used to go dashing
Once in the saddle I used to go gay
First to the cardhouse and then down to Rosy's
But I'm shot in the breast and I'm dyin' today

Bring sixteen tall cowboys to carry my casket,
Ten pretty women to sing me a song
Take me to the green valley, there lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong

Please, beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
Play the Death March as you carry me along
Take me to the green valley, there lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I known I've done wrong

    Beautiful voice.

  2. C.... S....

If as a youngster I'd had a father who had a decent voice and loved country, I can imagine this is the song he'd have sung to me at bedtime.

  3. Y.... Y....

    Rocketman is my cause

  4. A.... W....

Wow I heard this song on someone’s Alexa yesterday for the first time in almost 40 years. My parents used to play his album when I was young. I was taken back all those years and was surprised when I remembered all the words. It brings tears to my eyes remembering those days with my parents who are now long gone.

  5. F.... B....

Mom and Dad both liked Marty Robbins so he was one of the voices we grew up with. Very few balladeers match his skill.

  6. A.... P....

    Excelente tema

  7. H.... S....

The dislikes are Ray Williams on 20 different accounts

Played this song because I just watched the 3-pt tv series "Sreets of Laredo" starring James Garner and others. Very good with action and characters worth relating to.

19 down votes! What is wrong with people?

  19. S.... T....

The first version I heard as a very young child was by Burl Ives. Robbins is definitely superior.

  20. J.... B....

Anyone else here from the fallout new vegas version

    J.... B....

John Becket there is no fallout new Vegas version of this song

    J.... B....

@Issac Arellano but we learned of marty robbins from big iron. Presented to us by the lovely mr new vegas

    J.... B....

jas b never listened to that radio station
I was to scared to get earraped every 6 minutes

    J.... B....

@Issac Arellano Yee there is. "Streets of New Reno." It's sung by the Lonesome Wanderer if you recruit him to perform a The Acss casino for the Talent Pool quest

  21. P.... C....

Anyone else here from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs?

    P.... C....

Paul - not straight from Buster but I did watch it two nights ago. The first few vignettes were hilarious...sick humor on my part. I get that. Interesting set of stories, though.

    P.... C....

Just started watching the opening credits and came straight here. Now I just need a shot of tequila.

  22. R.... F....

So, went looking for the lyrics. Wow, every site I went to did not include the "cool water" verse! Most of them were so far off it was crazy. Perhaps this is a song that is very open to interpretation. Wikipedia has all the words but the order varies. It says right in the article that it is very open to interpretation. I like this version very much though. Marty seems to have the verses in the correct order.

  23. P.... W....

    I still love this song.

  24. G.... H....

Thank you for nurturing my soul. Bless you

  25. R.... L....

    MARTY ROBBINS - UNRIVALLED

  26. F.... N....

  32. J.... R....

What real country not the horrible music they have on the radio today which honestly is country then city music

    J.... R....

This isn't Country. This is Western Music!

  33. J.... R....

Streets of Laredo is about a cowboy who had got shot in the heart and they had wrapped him in white linen since they knew he would die soon so then he died

  34. G.... T....

The wounded cowboy was one demanding son of a gun.

    G.... T....

I feel guilty laughing at that but this song is genius. All these classics are. I Picture the old movies

    G.... T....

True. But really, in your final moments, wouldn't you like some cool water and somebody to tell about some of your life before you go?

  35. j.... c....

    Best ballad singer

  36. c.... ....

You can hear every single syllable as clear as crystal, to me the very best every song he sings is incredible, just listen to my women my wife live , the video is on you tube , close your eyes and it sounds just like the recorded song just brilliant

  37. A.... L....

How 9 people can give this or any of his recordings the thumbs down is beyond me, shame on you. love it!

  38. B.... T....

The ending of gun grave fits this weirdly enough

  39. B.... G....

No one like the late, great Marty Robbins.

  41. S.... r....

I know i have done wrong, one day i will be shot at the breast like the man in this story.

  42. S.... B....

A voice of operatic quality. No one sang a cowboy ballad better and precious few as well. He will be missed.

Oops, double negative. This song is fantastic.

  44. L.... C....

  46. S.... B....

I want this played at my funeral.

    S.... B....

    Me also

  47. B.... ....

This is a variation on an old Irish traditional song, but there are Canadian versions too. To hear the old version look up 'When I was on horseback' by Steeleye Span. You won't regret it.
