Marty Robbins - Private Wilson White Lyrics
Private Wilson White, America is proud tonight
Proud to claim you for their hero, Private White
On a battlefield one day in a land so far away
Mid the rattle of machine guns in the dawn's first golden light
While one volunteered to save them, volunteered to give his life
Private Wilson White, America is proud tonight
Proud to claim you for their hero, Private White
Nineteen lives he meant to save, not one backward glance he gave
As he yelled, for God and country, through an open field he ran
But the enemy had seen and they understood his scheme
And the fire from their machine guns knocked the rifle from his hands
Proud to claim you for their hero, Private White
Seven bullets found their mark, seven bullets near the heart
And the force of seven bullets knocked the soldier to the ground
But his promise he must keep, and he staggered to his feet
Ran toward the four machine guns that pinned the soldiers down
Private Wilson White, America is proud tonight
Proud to claim you for their hero, Private White
Bullets flyin' everywhere, smoke and gunfire filled the air
Onward ran the wounded soldier to keep the vow he made
Nearly dead, but deep within, was the strength to pull the pin
As he yelled, I died for freedom, he threw the hand grenade
Private Wilson White, America is proud tonight
Proud to claim you for their hero, Private White

My favorite country singer
a lot of medal of honor recipients stories match that of private white, they gave their life so that others can live.
Never heard this song before, thank you for sharing
I have listened & loved Marty since I was a kid. Never heard this before. I was a U.S. Marine Sgt. in viet nam & this song makes the hair stand up on my arm.
I know this is about the Vietnam war but i always picture it in the pacific theater during ww2
This is really brilliant love this song from marty the greatest singer ever thank you for this
Something that is old IS something that is new..I've hear lots of Marty tunes.. This is a tune I Have not heard this one before. I really really like country ballads & ballads
I always picture this in the Pacific theater
I picture this in Europe.
Nathan Miller definitely sounds like WWII theme to me.
I cant find a thing about private Wilson White. If he is a real person I would like to know what he did. I don't care about the song. Google DuckDuckGo and others only return stuff about the Marty Robbins song.
Same. Further, only six Whites have been awarded the Medal of Honor - 4 in the Civil War, 1 in the Philippines Insurrection, and 1 in the War on Terror. I'm guessing Wilson White is a fictional character.
Oh you too? Well thanks for confirming what I thought. I actually spent time looking this up.
Ah! So stirring! Can't like it enough! Also, 10 people have spotty vision...
If you really think about it, it COULD be about the Normandy Invasion (D-Day)
"19 of them held their breath"
"In a land so far away...mid the rattle of *machine guns*"
"Ran toward the *FOUR* machine guns" (Accurate)
Actually, Marty Robbins himself wrote this during the Vietnam War to honor the many Americans heroes who served in that War. Private Wilson White was a symbol of all our heroes who made various sacrifices, some ultimate, for our Country.
Marty was a great Patriot, and he could put great lyrics and his voice together to prove it....
Is this song based lwo jima
ffffffegit
A very touching story told in song by "The Master" himself.
either Wilson was really brave stupid or crazy...personally i think its the first one
+Alex Trimm ..You ever served you would know for sure. Respects.
+Alex Trimm indeed
the same melody as Billy Venero
+Francisco Dávila Flores you said that in the last video
+Alex Trimm ... The thing is , it´s kind of curious. I heard first Billy Venero, so maybe I would had said the same of B,V.,if I had heard Private Wilson White first. Don´t take it badly, I like a lot Marty Robbins songs. I was just wondering what could be the story behind this fact. If anyone knows, would be great to hear of it.
@Francisco Dávila Flores eh whatever there both nice songs i wish he did more ballads...
+Francisco Dávila Flores I think its meant to symbolise the utter braveness of these two men, the bravery and bravado showed , which most people would consider tomfoolery, to save others without consideration of their own safety and life.
Happy 4rth of July!
Marty ,just the best
How can I get a CD of Private Wilson White

nice one Barry pukka song bud
great song by the late marty robbins ty for uploading this song
Marty was a brilliant song writer, and an even better story teller. He once said, "I didn't chose a word or anything. I just wrote the song until it stopped." That quote alone is inspiration.
@CptSato Great song. What album is it on? I haven't been able to fins it. Check my facebook page for pics of Marty at one of his last concerts before he passed. I took them at Penn National Raceway in October of '82
Thanks for the post. I still have this 45, it was my fathers.
My great grandmother was his sidekick forever infact he wrote two songs about her. She had different names, her birth name, and stage name and then once again changed it when she worked for Ronald Reagan in his office.
awesome song. but then anything marty sang was great. thank u for sharing.
You're welcome, and a Great loss to the music world on that day in 1982, when Marty passed on.
Can't believe it was so long ago Marty left us, but here it is 2019, listening to this brilliant singer and his song for those heroes who fought for their mates, and died . Its like a lot of Marty's music, its got a sad note to it, if he wrote this song for soldiers in Vietnam , I can relate, being Australian, we also had our soldiers there too, the politics is not worth the talk , the men and women who went and did a job that is what its all about, I had the privilege of seeing Marty live years ago in Melbourne Australia, he is the best , I was in awe, just the best.
First album I ever bought was Gunfighter Ballads and trail songs, yes before all the rock n roll which O love too.
I can sing every song every word, and now on you tube my old ears are hearing gems I didn't know existed, god bless you Marty, and thanks for the music mate!
I agree, Count Me Out is one of my favourites also, glad you made it back from Vietnam.
Barry,
Canada
Thanks for the info. Could you upload it, I would love to see it, my copy is only audio and it's not the best quality, I wonder if it was ever recorded in the studio.
Thanks Barry
I have a video of Marty and Ronnie singing Big Mouthin Around as a duet. I think at the end of the video he says great job Jr. and he is talking to Ronnie. Im not sure about the version you have, but mine is a clip from Marty's TV show.
I have only heard about four songs by Ronnie, I have one I really love, It's called "That's How It Feels To Walk In My Shoes" and you can hear Marty in his voice. I have one by Marty done live, called "Big Mouthin' Around" and at the end he says great job Jr. Is there a marty Robbins Jr. would you know?.
I have to agree Marty was fantastic, the other singer I admire as much as Marty is Jim Reeves, I would have to toss a coin to say which one I like the best, I had the great fortune to have seen Marty in person in the 60's., I have a lot of his music that I listen to regularly.
Marty Robbins was a genius, whereas Jim Reeves was a sappy derivative pop crooner, you simply just can't compare them.
I just love to hear when Marty sang with his most beautiful voice these sad ballads, but also all the other songs because for me Marty was the best country and western singer of alltimes(but that is personal)for me he never died and thanks to you Barry and all you wonderful people who are posting all these wonderful vids of Marty and his two compadres Don and Bill, the memory will keep alive.I hope that they all may rest in peace in the Hall of Fame in Heaven.
