Marty Robbins - Prairie Fire Lyrics
While drivin' a herd of cattle out in old Nebraska way
Headin' east at Broken Bow one hot September day
Tryin' to get to Omaha we hoped to find a buyer
We never counted in the odds of a western prairie fire
Somethin' far away was spellin' trouble in the sky
Comin' closer was a sound that topped the devil's choir
Then we knew we had to race a raging prairie fire
When all at once a flame is seen a lickin' at the sky
And every heart is quicker and there's fear in every eye
We'd just one chance to get away for there's no place to hide
Gotta reach the river Platte one inch deep and one mile wide
The herd is gettin' tired but we've got no time to rest
From ridin' tail on a thousand head with the weather gettin' dry
The black cloud in the west is warning ride ride ride
The roarin' heat is closer ashes fallin' by our side
And every breeze is burnin' singin' with its warnin' cry
We've got to reach the river but it's still ten miles or more
And close behind us we can hear that wind infernal roar
But fate had other plans for we lost that fatal race
We lost for neither man nor beast could long keep up the pace
The mighty Platte subdued its rage but none were there to rest
We did our best to get away but only I am left
Now on the blackened prairie far as the eye can see
The grim remains are there to show that God rules you and me
Just one he left to tell the tale just one was his desire
We lost our herd and thirty men to a raging prairie fire

I always think of Marty robbin's songs as my father and I herd cattle
thank god for new vegas, or i wouldve never heard any of his music
This song is old and I like it
Cowboy song make me happy when iam sad
Cowboy song never grow old
Love Marty , listened to 15 of his songs in a row. One thing in common or should I say ,a variation on a theme
“Ghost riders in the sky” !!!
One more classic that is way TOO SHORT...you're just getting into it, then it's over.
No one will ever touch this guys music. No one.
Just awesome... I've been a fan of Marty's gunfighter and trail ballads for several years now since I first heard "El Paso" and its beautiful guitar work, and this has to be the pinnacle for me. I listen to this practically every time I'm on here, which is almost daily!
Wish I could find the lyrics, the right lyrics. A google search only turned up dozens of sites who've all posted the wrong lyrics. I'm sure they all stole them from each other.
I posted the correct lyrics above. Scroll up about a half-dozen comments. It's in a reply to Bailey Naylor's request for lyrics
fantastic marty just love him the greatest singer ever thank you for this
Marty's voice is like opium
c c except his voice is GOOD for you.
Smooth and addictive
Pretty good picking, too.
Cool 😎
Should be a music video for this. Like a bunch of cowboys quickly moving the herd along as the fire rages closer in the background.
I love Marty Robbins because each of his songs tell a story. This is such a great song and story
the bass line matches the galloping of horses and that's all i picture when listening to this song

Good job with the lyrics! But just a couple of corrections, if I may. In the 5th verse, second line, it should read: "...and every beast and bird is fleeing with its warnin' cry..." And in the 3rd verse, the line is "...every heart is quickened..." In other words, their hearts are brought to life -- beating faster -- as the danger of the Cowboys' situation becomes clear
Every song is a story. Amazing!
Such a beautiful song! One of the most talented country singers ever
This is REAL western music. Modern western music sounds soooooooo styrio typical.
Awesome
Fallout NV and the love of western movies got me into Marty. No regrets.
the old west this kinda brings me back through time to the 1800s
Uston, we have a problem. WE'VE FINALLY FOUND SOME GOOD MUSIC!!!

Hell yeah great song.
Anyone besides me live in Nebraska?
Never lived there, but passed through a time or two. It's a very beautiful place.
Broken bow here! Lol first time I’ve ever heard this song
this song make me remember my childhood
There's a big difference twixt Western, and "Country" music and performers such as Robbins and Sons of the Pioneers and The Terry Family and Dave Stamey, etc, exemplify that difference!
& cowboy music might be consider a different set still- try listening to Chris Ledoux if you have not already.. I really Like Marty Robbins- both music & voice, but I think I like Chris Ledoux even more & he is the real deal- lived it, wrote it & sang it with a really good voice also
I have a bunch of his albums- to my knowledge he was not an actual working cowboy or rodeo cowboy- he was raised in suburbs of Phoenix, a good part Paiute, went into USN @ 17 during WWII, later was a race car driver (NASCAR, etc). I think he had a great voice, did excellent songs. Just saying Chris not only sang it- he lived it. Not taking anything away from Marty
.
Actually, Martin worked on (I think it was his uncle's) a horse ranch as a teen, in the mountains near his home in Glendale....other family members also were cowboys...many of these were named in one of the western songs that he wrote. He was a cowboy, boxer (in the navy), brick layer, midget race car driver, NASCAR driver (his second love), but most of all, the most talented and versatile singer to ever set foot on s stage. As wonderful on stage as he was, one of his sisters (Lillie Nevitt) told me that as a very young boy and very shy, they would have him sing in church but he always had to 'hide' behind a curtain when he'd sing. There will never be another singer to compare or equal his talent, or match that beautiful, God given voice!!!!
Helen Shields you are correct Ma'am. My great grandmother was actually friends with him in Glendale and lived close to his Ranch. Apparently they were good friends as teenagers and that's all there was to it. He obviously ended up moving later and they lost touch. But he did indeed work on a ranch in Glendale.

once i heard big iron i was hooked, every song is a little masterpiece of a story :-)
So true mate the first once i heard was five brothers i looked at every other song and just almost all of them
@EAdventures Productions Five Brothers is so sad, but such a good story! The first Marty Robbins song I heard was Big Iron and El Paso.
Sadly i can only listen to bog Iron every so often thanks to Fallout NV overuse of it
Roland Deschain Please capitalize “i” I hate when people do this
I really love the western & cowboy paintings that were used for the artwork displayed during the song and I really wish I could find some of those paintings.
Could probably just screenshot them here and print them out later
Ahh yeah thanks so very much for putting this song up. Marty Robbins is my favorite classic country musician and Prairie Fire is my favorite Marty Robbins song. This is just such an amazing song and it really gives you a sense of what a prairie fire is like. Marty was from my home state & current state of residence, Arizona and he was from Mesa back in the 20's when all the cities that make up the megalopolis we call Phoenix today like Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Peoria, & Phoenix were still separate individual farming communities that were still many miles apart. I'm proud that he was born & raised here and that is undoubtedly why he knew so much about cowboy life and life in the West. He has such a beautiful baritone tenor voice and made such awesomely amazing music! I love Marty Robbins music!
Marty ROBBINS,,IS AND WILL ALLWAYS BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY & WESTERN PERFORMER,COMPOSER,ARRANGER,WRITER OF ALL TIME...I SAY THIS WIRHOUT APOLOGY..

YEEE-HAWWW!!! Grady Martin is just RRRIPPING IT UP!!!
Ride,cowboy,ride.....
It’s Marty Robbins
Take the music out and this is the perfect example of the short hard-hitting short story. Everything you need to know is 2 1/2 minutes. Genius.
I know, right? That, and the way of singing the first part of the song... reminds me to ''A tall, handsome stranger''. Anyone else agrees?
I'm an idahoan, born and raised, and I've seen wildfires and what they can do, sometimes the smoke gets so thick you can't breathe without coughing, despite the fact that the fire is 50 miles away.
Hello from a fellow Idahoan Christian
