Marty Robbins - Kaw-Liga Lyrics
Kaw-Liga was a wooden Indian standin' by the door
He fell in love with an Indian maiden over in the antique store
Kaw-Liga too stubborn to ever let it show
So she could never answer yes or no.
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk
Kaw-Liga too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knoty pine.
Poor ol' Kaw-Liga he never got a kiss
Poor ol' Kaw-Liga he don't know what he missed
Is there any wonder that his face is red
Kaw-Liga that poor ol' wooden head.
Kaw-Liga was a lonely Indian never went nowhere
Kaw-Liga just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer yes or no.
And then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid
And took her oh so far away but ol' Kaw-Liga stayed
Kaw-Liga too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knoty pine.
Poor ol' Kaw-Liga he never got a kiss
Poor ol' Kaw-Liga he don't know what he missed
Is there any wonder that his face is red
Kaw-Liga that poor ol' wooden head...

Marty Robbins Kaw-Liga Comments
When the song slaps but the lyrics are racist 😅
+Devin Whittemore - maybe too those who truly are racist's the lyrics are racist, but to the rest of us they really don't mean much about anything, just another story to tell..
just sayin'
Marty robbins in town
Glenn Johnson In all the years i have been listening to Marty`s music, not aware of hi s version of the Hank Williams classic.Awesome.Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for posting. I needed that. ;)
A GREAT cover of a great song ,,
A song by great by the greatest singer songwriter of the twenty century?.
Who's playing the steel in this song? Does anyone know?
I used to sing 'poor old Elijah'.
Stephen Morris KAW-LIGA
Love Marty, but Hank sings this better
Never heard of this song before, not by Marty or Hank Williams! Its an amazing song ^_^
Marty and Hank both did exceptional with this song! :3
Best versions are
1. Hank Williams Sr.
2. Charley Pride
3. Marty Robbins
4. Hank jr
For my own list I'd switch the top two. All 4 are great, though!
I can't seem to find it, but, Hank Williams Sr. was able at the end to say Kaw-liga for quite a while, it was like, a minute or so, it was a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time, I own it somewhere.....
Charlie’s my #1 then Sr. - a big Marty fan but on this one #3...
I like this version, but I like this version also:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPsk1BsUCgw
i like this version best great singer and song
Mark Heeter have heard Charlie prides?
This is the best version comparing to Tommy Steele!
So wasn't July-Ah. Darn those old tinny transistor radios
Marty's version is phenomenal, but it's the second best version.
Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. are the best but this was damn good
Not as good as hank williams but a second close
@Robert Revels that is debated ! :)
I calmly disagree
He can even make a log of wood come alive...that's talent
when marty sang any song he makes it his own just marty
Moonrise Kingdom braught me here
the best version of the song, ı listened nearly all versions, but Marty was at best on Kaw liga by far!
Try Charley P ride..
I know. I lustened Pride too. Still I say Marty.!
Hank's original from 1953, followed by Marty's, followed by Charley's.
tersane kozan Neil McCoy did pretty damn good on it too
@Brian Lawrence yes, Charley's is my favorite because of the yip sound (I'm sure there is an actual term for that, but I don't know what it is).
martys was the first one heard, love it
to:tarquin45 You forgot Hank Williams,Sr.
Ray Price also did a great version, but I do love Marty Robbins.
And what about the Big O his version ?
Marty Robbin's version is a lot better than the newer one that Hank Williams Jr screwed up, but my all time favorite is Charlie Pride.
As good as Marty did it, Charlie was even better yet.
try a feller named jamey johnson he is just as good if not better
Hank Williams was truly unbelieveably talented. His songs will live as long as there is music.
fantastic, still lookin for ronnie milsap's version
One of the better covers of this great song
my dad amde his one song of this up. LOL its funny
i think he was the best at singing this song
I guess Hank Williams didn't know the proper spelling when he made the original song...
okay, thanks :)
have only heard this song sung by charley pride. but this is great. what else can u expect of marty/
i love this song i listen to it everyday.
As a young lad i went with my dad to a Marty Robbins concert (Sydney Australia, Horden Pavillion), I met Marty after the show and never forgot how cool he was as a person....awesome voice, classic country/western, i always loved the gun-fighter songs. Thanks for uploading this song, havent heard it in years.
Do you have more

I love it too!!GREAT!!!
Rose
Better than Charley Pride`s version!
My dad and all the other seneca indians would dance to this song. THey wuold dance so hard you could feel the dance floor bow it was so old at the time. You could hear the natives howl this song. It will always have a place in my heart as it did my father.
Good song!!!!
I think Hank's, Charley's and Marty's are all great versions of this very clever song.
