Marty Robbins - Gene Autry, My Hero Lyrics
The childhood memories I treasure the most I suppose
Are the Saturday afternoons spent at the town picture show
I worked all day long in the fields but at night I would dream
Of seeing Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen
Twelve o'clock noon found the first one in line at the door
'Cause all week I'd work but today I would fulfill my dream
And I'd see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen
The man in the white cowboy hat was a hero to me
He was then, he is now, and I guess he always will be
Time takes away many things but it can't take a dream
And I can still see him go ridin' across the big screen
When as a kid from our shack on the desert I'd roam
But mom understood me I know, 'cause she'd smile when I'd say
Gene Autry and I had been rounding up outlaws all day
The man in the white cowboy hat was a hero to me
He was then, he is now, and I guess he always will be
And every so often I go back in time and I dream
And I see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen
And I see Gene Autry go ridin' across the big screen

Marty Robbins Gene Autry, My Hero Comments
This is 100% true. He told the same story in an interview.
Gene Autry was my hero too. He still is.
tdrnkr mine too, highlight of my childhood was seeing him at the Cleveland arena in the 40,s..
I'm sure MARTY AND GENE are singing together.
This is a good song but my childhood hero was Roy Rogers
his voice is simply magical love him marty is the greatest ever singer
The first time I heard this song was Glen Campbell's version on the "B" side of his record " It's Just A Matter of Time." If you listen to that one real close you can hear Marty's voice in the background doing harmony vocals on the chorus. Oh BTW Marty also wrote the song, which I think is awesome that he would do a tribute song for Gene.
Eddie Haber
lovely song
What a well written song by Marty Robbins. I love his voice too
Love Gene and Love Marty...but Glen sings it better.
That's a really nice interesting comment.
Marty Robbins is another "One and Only"
Great voice and could sing anything ( The Greatest Balladeer that ever was or is in my opinion.... Ray Rogers....
Great tune, I acquired this song a couple of years ago, Marty had so many great songs................. saw him in person once in the 60's.
I saw him only once in concert in Illinois. It was one of the best memories of my life and sadly was only a few weeks before he was gone.
Another great song by Marty.
from a wonderful singer to give such a tribute to the greatest singing cowboy of all. love them both.
I think they are so very great...Autry and Robbins, may they R.I.P.
