Marty Robbins - El Paso Lyrics

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love but in vain, I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved

So in anger I
Challenged his right for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Just for a moment I stood there in silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride

Just as fast as I
Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone in life; nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death

I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow, a bullet may find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart

And at last here I
Am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me
I have to make it to Rosa's back door

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I'm getting weary, unable to ride

But my love for
Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest

From out of nowhere Felina has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss and Felina, goodbye

This song parallels with Walter White’s story in so many ways.

    ceiling titty

    Sullyhogs could u elaborate ?

ceiling titty Sure! See, the gunslinger in the song symbolizes Walt. Before the cancer, he was a really nice guy who loved his family and was passionate about science. Just like the gunslinger, Walt falls in love with something that he knows is evil and would change him: making methamphetamine. He said in the final episode, “I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it, and I was really... I was alive.” In the gunslinger’s case, he fell in love with a woman that he considered to be a witch and would cast a spell on him. Verse two of the song says, “Blacker than night were the eyes of Feleena/Wicked and evil while casting her spell/My love was deep for this Mexican maiden/I was in love, but in vain, I could tell.”

After this verse in the song, a stranger comes into the saloon and starts flirting with the gunslinger’s new love, and he immediately becomes jealous and kills this stranger, meaning that this woman has changed him just like he thought she would. Walt’s case is very similar. Cooking meth starts to turn Walt into a much more sinister man, who becomes overprotective towards his business, and would kill anyone if it meant the safety of what he loved. Now, who might represent the flirting stranger in the song is hard to tell. Could be Gus Fring, Tuco, or hell, even Jesse Pinkman, but I personally think it’s the pressures of his everyday life and his innocence before his cancer. He killed those things once he started cooking, so he could finally focus on doing something that he considered to be special. In the El Camino movie, Walt says to Jesse (in a scene that takes place around season 2 of Breaking Bad), “You're really lucky, you know? You didn't have to wait your whole life to do something really special.”

Of course, the actions of both the gunslinger and Walt can’t go without consequences. Both of these characters are forced to leave the respective places where they live (El Paso for the gunslinger and New Mexico for Walt) in order to escape the law, but both eventually come back after a certain amount of time because they wanted to see what they love again, though Walt also had a score to settle. Back home, they both are killed by gunshot wounds through the chest, and die beside the things which they love. The gunslinger dies beside his beloved Feleena, and Walt dies in a meth lab.

  19. Jerry D'Arezzo

Shocked by the foul, evil deed I had done--why is this line a ghost you can't hardly see or hear in this ballad? Just the idea that evil doers can have remorse in the very moment following a foul deed is anathama to the powers paid to punish rather than heal a sinner. After all, such powers have no power to heal anyone or anything, and can only cure by confinement and or the killing of killers.

Jerry D'Arezzo True evil doers do not feel remorse. Psychopaths don’t feel empathy. Serial killers LOVE what they do! That’s why they do it so often.

I love El Paso. Visited 3 years ago, fell in love with the place. I miss those mountains, the gray squirrels and lizards darting about, and those cheap shops by the border.

    tanner fox

Don't forget the rattlers, went hiking up in the mountains and came across the biggest Western diamondback I've ever seen. Keep mind you I live on the east coast and we have the Eastern diamondback which is much heavier and longer. But this rattler was huge it was 9 ft long.

I like the country western feel, especially in films, and I feel like the just don't make alot of wild west movies anymore. I guess the market was uber saturated in the 50s-60s and people got bored, like in Toy Story when Woody gets replaced with Buzz Lightyear.
