Martha Reeves - Dancing In The Street Lyrics
Callin' out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the streets
They're dancing in Chicago
In New York City (dancing in the street)
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swinging, swaying and record playing
And dancing in the streets
Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
There'll be dancing
They're dancing in the street
This is an invitation across the nation
A chance for folks to meet
There'll be laughing and singing and music swinging
Dancing in the streets
Philadelphia, PA (dancing in the street)
Baltimore and DC now (dancing in the street)
Don't forget the Motor City (dancing in the street)
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere (everywhere)
There'll be swinging, swaying and record playing
And dancing in the street
Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
They're dancing
They're dancing in the streets (dancing in the street)
Way down in L.A.
Every day
They're dancing in the street

I can remember dancing to this song at Action A Go-Go doing the "jerk". I am talking about the good times when I was 14.
Real music they don't make like this anymore, great memories 👍

Excited to see my favorite 50's \60's cover band bulldogs possibly do this on September 14 th at Trinity Community in Union City Indiana
Much better song than the always in the Motown compilations "Nowhere to Run".
Magnum P.I. (2018) brought me here
Ah ! Great. And their beautiful faces.
Here from Glory Road 👌🏽

Rhythm ride a trip through the Motown sound brought me here
I hope my favorite oldies cover band the bulldogs do this next Saturday night
Summer's energy
Where all my Detroit peps at!?
The Funk Brothers in their prime. No other music like theirs.
Marvin Gaye on drums. He was actually one of Motown's original in-house drummers who were to morph into the Funk Brothers before becoming an artist in his own right. He also co-wrote the song.
Between Martha and the Vandellas and the David Bowie/Mick Jagger versions both have their strengths and weaknesses but the Martha and the Vandellas kick butt with their version
I came here because of Recess: School's Out.
i just love it!!!
This song will experience a huge revival on 11/4/2020....
"WE NEED MORE EMPHASIS ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH BEAT GUYS!"
'Baltimore and D.C. now."
Classic good song!!!
Amazing song but why are the vocals in this completely cut out by the instruments?
Nothing beats the original in this case. None of the covers can do it justice.
um is the first bit of this song trumpet
Recess School's Out reminds Me.

MOTOWN'S 60TH ANNIVERSARY
WITH MORE GREAT RECORDING ARTIST AT THEIR BEST FROM
YESTERDAY TODAY & FOREVER
MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLAS WHILE THEY
ENTERTAINER ALL THEIR MUSIC CONNOISSEURS W/ THOSE GREAT
"MOTOWN SOUNDS" WHY CONTINUE
TO ENJOY THOSE GOLDEN MEMORIES BUT I KNOW THOSE WERE
THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE & I WANT TO THANK ALL, BECAUSE
THEY ALWAYS BRING HEALING TO
MY SOUL, WHEN MY LONELY DAYS
AND NIGHTS SEEMS SO HARSH AND COLD
I believe this song plays somewhere in the world, everyday!
Definitively the MAXX!
I wonder if they played Motown in the south back then
so... bowie n'em took it from these ladies ?
Has anyone seen the music video for the David Bowie and Mick Jagger cover? It’s pure cringe, trust me. Both are great artists, and respect where respect is due. But it felt unnatural and banal as it clashed heavily with the styles of the two musicians, both visually and musically. Like... okay. You know the very end of the “Despacito” cover TwoCellos did? Where they’re just kinda singing the song but neither of them know spanish or can dance so it’s just a couple of white dudes, who while are very talented, are out of their element... and it shows.
The best song to play at a cook out in the backyard with friends and family dancing and singing to this song and smoke weed
yes, peace in your lifetime is possible :-)
[Verse 1]
Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat
Summer's here
And the time is right
For dancing in the street
They're dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
Up in New York City
[Hook]
All we need is music
Sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swinging
Swaying
And records playing
Dancing in the street
[Chorus]
Oh

So come on
Every guy
Grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
They'll be dancing
They're dancing in the street

.........A TIMELESS CLASSIC FROM 1964........!!!!!!!!!!!!
Martha Reeves at first didn't like this song. She said give it to the supremes are someone else. But Barry told her to do the song and the rest is history.

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY: August 22, 1964 - 54 Years Ago: Martha and The Vandellas debuted at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with their single, "Dancing In The Street." This was the 6th entry on the Hot 100 following two Top Ten singles and it became their biggest hit when it peaked at No. 2 for 2 weeks beginning October 17, 1964. [08/23/2018]
Martha & The Vandellas recording sounding as strong as the day it was recorded and the message for people getting together and having fun as relevant and important as ever!
How is Barry Gordy not the first trillionaire with all the hits his company produced at Motown?
he sold the company for $60 million
He also ripped the funk brothers off left, right and centre (sorry my american friends - that is the correct spelling)
All the more reason why he should had been the first trillionaire
Nice song
Today's (7/28) 5 minute story, on NPR, about this song brought me here. They even interviewed Martha Reeves as a part of the story. Catch the story if you can, on NPR.org

Did they ever think David Bowie and Mick Jagger would do this too?
I'm here because of V for Vendetta. Weird because i tought they were listening classical music :P I'm surprised xD
Mark Kurlansky had written a whole book about “Dancing in the Street,” and its supposed status as a radical anthem. Called “Ready for a Brand New Beat,” Kurlansky’s book is comprehensive; no known fact about the song “Dancing in the Street” seems to have escaped its pages. He develops a strong case for why “Dancing in the Street” would be widely interpreted as a call to action. Here’s what else was going on in the summer of 1964. On June 17th, the Ku Klux Klan firebombed the first of over three dozen black churches that would burn that summer. On June 19th, the Civil Rights Bill passed the Senate. On June 21st, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee launched its Summer Project, a campaign to register rural black voters in Mississippi; that same day, three of its volunteers, one black and two white, went missing (movie "Mississipi Burning") In July, riots broke out in Harlem, Bed Stuy and Rochester, New York; Malcolm X said, “We want freedom by any means necessary.” “Dancing in the Street” was released on July 31st. In August, there were riots in New Jersey and Chicago and Jacksonville, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, and the bodies of the S.N.C.C. volunteers were found buried on a Mississippi farm, one bullet in each of the hearts of the white men, three bullets in the black man. Halfway through Kurlansky’s book, “Dancing in the Street” suddenly struck me as terribly moving song"
It is just too bad the new generations just have no idea how much songs like this influenced the youth of that day!
This was popular in 1966 in the D.C. area - 51 years ago - over half a century. Now, compare rap and hip-hop to the rhythm 'n' blues of that bygone era - NO comparison; R 'n' B (which was rhythmic and melodic) will STILL be remembered in another 50 years...
This was the jaaaaaaaaaaaaam
Best version ever...they rocked it.
"Hey, no running in the halls!"
"Yeah, what's the big deal? It's just the end of the school year."
...
"The end of the school year?!"
"Woo-hoo!" (the coach grabs Yamashiro as they celebrate)
That was the first time I remember hearing this song
Disney's Recess: School's Out brought me here 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wasn't a big fan of the TV show to be honest since I was only little. But I do remember this song from the movie.
written by Mickey Stevenson, who sang on the recording and played the Cowbell, Ivy Joe Hunter, who sang in the recording and Martha Reeves. Marvin Gaye played piano on the record
I don't hear any male voices on this recording...only the Rosalind, Betty and Martha.
recess 😏😏
Chelsea Johnson Yep! That show brought me here too! Lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Recess School's Out led me here
Megpoid Gumi same
I don't remember the actual first time I had the song but I do remember it playing in that movie very well. Although, I don't remember being a big fan of TJ and his gang as a kid.
Lead vocals by Martha Reeves. Background vocals by Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford, William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter.
Instrumentation by THE FUNK BROTHERS: Marvin Gaye: drums, James Jamerson: bass guitar, Jack Ashford: percussion,
Ivy Jo Hunter: percussion, Henry Cosby: saxophone, Thomas "Beans" Bowles: saxophone, Russ Conway: trumpet,Herbert Williams: trumpet, Paul Riser: trombone, George Bohannon: trombone, Robert White: guitar, Eddie "Chank" Willis: guitar, Joe Messina: guitar. WOW!!! What a crew!!
sadly Mr. Joe is the only one left who played on this that is still alive, also Mr. Willis
Marvin was on drums? I didn't know that!
First slap bass i ever heard !
go to any youtuebe old Elvis recording at Sun Records and you will hear the late Bill Black doing his. Paul of the beatles was a fan of both Bill and James Jamersons bass playing
As we approach the dog days of summer, let's all take a travel back in time when African American music was slowly gaining national acceptance. One of the most EPIC sounds of Motown
Best music ever made.
@Sheila6325 Nice to hear. I'm not a big Motown fan but I like to listen to them once in a while.
LOL I know, it's an age thing. I think it's great to have each generation loving their own music. But the best part is, the fun, or special songs from each generation seem to be able to come back and touch everyone. Kinda like true unity now and then. I like that the most.
@Sheila6325 True plus I loved Motown the musical and the music has a sense of resonance today.
I never knew Detroit was in Africa!
this glorious song came out on my 12th birthday..I am a classical pianist, teacher and vocal coach..Classical music is my favorite music, but THIS SONG IS THE MOST JOYOUS,UPLIFTING,MAKES ME CRY IT'S SOOOO GREAT!!!
BEST MOTOWN,ROCK N' ROLL SONG ,in my opinion,EVER!!!!! And of course NO ONE could do it better than Martha and the Vandellas!
THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT YOU ARE 100% CORRECT !!!!!!
Great classic....
I was a senior in high school when this was released. Loved it!!
Last day of Junior year today, gonna play this loudly in the crowd
Remember when this first came out. 1964-65. They sure had it all didn't they? New, the beat, the melody. All perfect and in superb harmony. Memories that will never fade away.
I AGREE... GOOD SOULFUL MUSIC I GREW UP WITH ..LOVE MY MOTOWN SOUND .... GREAT CLEAN LYRICS.....DANCE..
Bernie brought me here.
Iconic. Memorable and -- for me -- a life defining milestone. Those were great times (for me at least) with the best groups and music of that genre. Beautiful, regal, elegant, sophisticated and classy all girl and guy Motown groups. No gangser hip hop call to violence rap crap here! :-)
Great classic......
this is one of those songs that require you to hit max volume whenever its on
+Xx-MrEBA-xX and I got the audio system for it RIP neighbors ;)
it really is THE motown anthem...
"Dancing In the Street sounded absolutely MASSIVE, even on a cheap made-in-Japan transistor radio with a 2" speaker. But it ached to be heard OUTDOORS over a more powerful sound system.
The song was released on July 31, 1964: I have vivid memories of hanging out at the Officers Club pool on Westover Air Force Base and hearing this "blasting" over the PA. Now THERE was a song that could compete with the roar of all those B-52s taking off and landing around the clock.
And there was something about the smell of those hamburgers and hotdogs sizzling on the snackbar grill that made the whole experience unforgetable.
Beats the hell out of anything on the radio today.
Nothing in the world of music like The Motown Sound featuring the Funk Brothers.
Sure does!!!
"back in my day"..do you like sounding like a grandpappy? "nothing" is as good as it was in 'the good old days' right?
by 10 fold
Amen!!!
Cooley High brought me here. My favorite movie, and a great soundtrack.
Co-written by Marvin Gaye.
Marvin Gaye is on drums. He often was a sideman on Motown records. Yes he played drums !
+DWIGHT RICHARDS very easy beat to play on drums. Even without knowledge of advanced drumming techniques.
so says a cordinated man, wish I could but can't. also one reason drummers had a hard time with Motown tunes was they used two drummers alot
There's seems to be a lot of controversy, confusion, & urban legend when it comes to who exactly played drums on Dancing In The Street. It's generally acknowledged & accepted that Marvin Gaye did indeed play on the track. But many say there where actually two drummers (which Motown incorporated on several big hits) one of which was Benny "The Beast" Benjamin, others in the know have credited it to Motortown Revue drummer Fred Waites, while still some others in the Gordy inner circle say it was ‘Pistol’ Allen....It very well could be a mix/double-track/overdub of all of 'em!!! Also adding to that percussive rhythm are James Jamerson on bass, Jack Ashford on tambourine, & Ivy Jo Hunter on tire iron.....
liked Martha and the Vandellas just a tad more than the supremes all great music
