Martha And The Vandellas - A Love Like Yours (Don't Come Knocking Everyday) Lyrics

I broke your heart
And I made you blue
Instead of hurting back
You said "I love you"
That very day you won my heart
And my love for you shall never part

You have such an understanding way
And I appreciate you need what I say
'Cause a love like yours don't come knock, knock, knock, knocking
Knock, knocking everyday

Although I treated you bad from the start
Without question you gave me your heart
No, a love like yours don't come knock, knock, knock, knocking
Knock, knocking everyday

It's the little things you do
Oh, that mean so much
So very, very much
(Consideration) I never knew
That is, until I met you
Believe me

You made my life complete
And I know our love with all of my mind
You can believe gonna hold on tight
'Cause a love like yours don't come knock, knock, knock, knocking
Knock, knocking everyday

No, a love like yours don't come knock, knock, knock, knocking
Knock, knocking everyday

It's the little things you do
That mean so much
So very very much
(Consideration) no I never knew
That is, until I met you
Believe me

You made my life complete
And I know our love with all of my mind
You can believe gonna hold on tight
'Cause a love like yours don't come knock, knock, knock, knocking
Knock, knocking everyday
I said a love like yours, it don't come knocking
Knock, knocking everyday
I said a love like yours, it don't come, it don't come knocking
Knock, knocking everyday
'Cause a love like yours, it don't come knocking

I broke your heart
And I made you blue
Instead of hurting back
You said "I love you"
That very day you won my heart
And my love for you shall never part

I think that this is the B Side to Jimmy Mack. Great song.

    R.... f....

It was the B-Side to 1963's Heat Wave

Love this and the version by Tina Turner

A VERY underrated love song...one of their earlier R&B chart hits. Anybody know who the male chorus with The Vandellas is? I'll bet it's Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and two of the Temptations, who I can't identify. The Temptations appear on several Mary Wells hits as background male chorus during the 1962-64 period, until they began to break out.

@King Bee Hi King! I'm thinking you're right about Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier being on this. At any rate, it certainly gave the tune an edge. It turned an already-good song into something special.

It's fun to listen to Motown's early records because you never knew who'd pop up on backgrounds. The Tempts are all over the place as well as the Supremes. There is one song by Liz Lands- Midnight Johnny- everyone says the Temptations are in the background, but I swear, I can also hear the Marvelettes too. Those girls had a very distinct vocal sound. Katherine's voice always rang out and Wanda's falsetto is instantly recognizable. I honestly think they are on that record.

    K.... B....

@tomovox Yes, these were the earlier, casual, fun Motown days...if you were in the building, you were on the record!

    K.... B....

Lead vocals & spoken monologues: Martha Reeves
Background vocals: Rosalind Ashford, Annette Beard, & Brian Holland
Production: Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier
    Written by: H-D-H
Instrumentation by: Who else but The Funk Brothers?

    K.... B....

    yes it's them

    K.... B....

It surely sounds like HDH could have intended it for
    the Marvelettes.

  19. D.... M....

You've brought a big smile to my face! Thank you very much!

  20. D.... M....

I was about 14 when my folks bought me the Anthology album and this was one of the songs I kept coming back to over and over. When you're that young and you can really connect with a song like that, that says a lot about the quality of the music. I'm very happy to have you watching and adding your wonderful comments!

  21. D.... M....

I thank you for catching that! Someone had commented a while ago about respecting the music and I always think about that. If nothing else I always hope that someone will be able to REALLY put a face to the music and come to really respect these artists all the more. Thanks very much, edge!

  22. e.... b....

Brilliant tomovox, great tune giving respect by your presentation.

  23. b.... ....

It takes a keen sense of the Marvelettes to appreciate this, so I thank you for posting. I believe it's a B side (I could be wrong) but it flew way under the radar but I used to play it over and over. Must have been in puppy love or something.lol But it is a gem. Again, thanks and keep delivering good sounds! :)

  24. D.... M....

ooops! You ALWAYS have such fantastic visuals!

  25. D.... M....

Thanks so much for the comment, much appreciated. This is such a moving song and it was such a fun one to work on.

Now, what I'd love to see is a video you would make for this- you ALWAYS

  26. D.... M....

Such a great commentary on the song! And after reading your comment, I do agree that with the lyrical direction, this would exactly make for a wedding song. "Third Finger Left Hand"- wow! Now THAT's the wedding song! Thanks for the excellent comments!

  27. D.... M....

You're right on that- the lyrics are so true-to-life and sincere and I think that's what has always connected me to this song.

  28. d.... ....

I don't know about a wedding song, given "Knocking's" apologetic and regretful lyrics, and not with the jubilant and plainly marriage-centered "Third Finger Left Hand" available, but this is a sturdy M&V outing that, in retrospect, should have alerted the group's 1963 fans they were gonna be around for a while. And so they were. Along with its single A-side, "Heat Wave," it'll be 50 years old in July '13 and time has cast no shadow on the quality of either.

  29. b.... ....

    My song. Beautiful. :)
