De-Loused in the Comatorium is the debut studio album by American progressive rock band the Mars Volta, released on June 24, 2003, on Gold Standard Laboratories and Universal Records. Based on a short story written by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward, the concept album is an hour-long tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who enters a week-long coma after overdosing on a mixture of morphine and rat poison. The story of Cerpin Taxt alludes to the death of El Paso, Texas artist—and Bixler-Zavala's friend—Julio Venegas.
Co-produced by Rick Rubin and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Following the departure of Eva Gardner who had appeared on the band's early demos and EP, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea performed on De-Loused.

Blew almost 100 bucks on a boring RHCP and Snoop Dog concert to see these guys play for what would have probably been a short set only for them to drop off the tour before my stop. Of course this was probably because of the death of their friend and band mate. Oh well I got to see them open up for APC later on

I just came to this incredibly awesome music. But I don undersand the meaning of lyrics. Could somebody explain it to me?

The lyrics to most Mars Volta songs are usually cryptic, so its hard to tell what the exact meanings of the songs are. But This song and the album it came from (De-loused in the Comatorium, you should really check out the rest of the album) are based off a short story written by the lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Jeremy Michael Ward (Who died a month before the album was released). The short story is about a man named Cerpin Taxt who, after over-dosing on various drugs, goes into a coma in which he goes through a strange dream world. Then, after he wakes up from his coma, he then jumps off a bridge into incoming traffic, taking his own life. The short story itself is based off the real life and death of a friend of the band, Julio Venegas, who committed suicide the same way after also waking up from a coma caused by a heroin overdose.

Wife and I had dinner at a new place the other night. Small. Hipster vibe. Decent food prepared by people who cared. Friendly staff. What put it over the top for me was that the music playing in the dining room was this album. I had neglected to remember the Mars Volta until that meal. But now I’m back.

Don’t see that anyone’s mentioned that that’s Flea there at the beginning sitting in the the studio jamming’ out, then later it’s a different guy...Flea was the bass player for the first album, but never toured with them outside a few guest performances. Sort of the same relationship Frusciante has with them. They both appear on multiple Volta albums...
