Mark Lanegan - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? Lyrics

My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows

Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found

Kurt decided later, nope, this is mine and here is how it goes. Can't hate lanegans voice. However it's spelled

  7. s.... ....

Very very dark but original blues is soul and emotion and this is heart and soul:-).....the way it should be played.

  8. P.... H....

Would love to hear laynes voice on this

  9. s.... ....

This song is a testament to the blues genius called Leadbelly who originally recorded this in 1947 his spirit and soul will forever live on in his music.

  10. H.... T....

It’s cool to know this guy was on songs for the deaf. Great Cover!

  11. N.... J....

This so reminds me of being homeless sleeping under the pine trees because they keep off the rain

  12. N.... ....

.. crazy as it may sound, I always thought this version was done by  Godsmack, and as much as i'd still love to hear Godsmack do this, Lanegan's version kicks some serious ass!

    N.... ....

A bunch of us are chipping in a few dollars to have a midget assassin come to your house and break your knees with a ball bat for that comment. Just a heads up the tip isn't included so....

  13. E.... B....

Love this record,I still have my red vinyl copy the Mr. Lanegan defaced while singing it.

  14. D.... I....

Em 1990, Cobain tocou guitarra e fez os back-vocais neste cover, interpretado por Mark Lanegan em seu 1º disco solo, "The Winding Sheet".

  15. K.... A....

Ever heard the Donny Osmond version? : )

  16. B.... C....

Actually i'm here because of the Screaming Trees 😀

    B.... C....

I'm here because of the whispering bushes!

  17. B.... L....

Not A Bad Version, BUT ... Makes Me Want To Hear More Songs!!! BE HAPPY!!!

  18. D.... H....

Great cover! The Winding Sheet is an awesome album and this crowns it

  19. S.... A....

I love Kurt's version. But this is more haunting.

  20. B.... T....

    Excellent version.

  21. S.... ....

Kurt is wonderful, but this version is the best

  22. F.... ....

    lol Lanegan sucks

    F.... ....

    You Suck

    F.... ....

WTF?! get a pair of ears

    F.... ....

I'm sorry but your opinion is completely invalid, speaking objectively.

  23. A.... T....

Mark is the original. Winds around my dome soundly.

  24. K.... V....

So melancholy and some may even call it creepy. It echoes the fear, jealousy and paranoia of a lover in it's purest, darkest form.

  25. C.... B....

nirvana did the best version by far. kurt cobain voice is espectacular

  26. p.... ....

Tiny Tim does a cover of this, too.

  27. g.... ....

this is so fucking scary HAHAHA

  28. j.... ....

It wouldve been epic to hear Weiland cover the song

  29. J.... M....

It is sad to see that 90% of the comments mention Cobain or Nirvana

    J.... M....

Why? Mark showed the song to Kurt and he even played guitar on a version on The Winding Sheet.

    J.... M....

So your comment is just part of the 90%

    J.... M....

Why??? The Nirvana cover is a very very good cover...

    J.... M....

I will never forget Mark's live cover of atmosphear by joy division.

    J.... M....

Bardiño I didn’t know about that, now I know what in listening to next. Thanks!

  30. J.... K....

american gods could have just borrowed this, no issues though.

    J.... K....

    You were prescient......American Gods S02E08.

  31. M.... J....

    great job!

  32. M.... M....

The devil has written this song... ahahahah

    M.... M....

Sounds like heaven to me. Devil hates this song.

  33. J.... J....

    is kurt too?

  34. k.... m....

it was basically Nirvana ft Mark L. hey not that theres anything wrong with that that kicks ass!

  35. A.... B....

I do believe that this will be the first song I am going to learn how to play on my new guitar 🎸🎶😊♥

    A.... B....

its just a few chords and make sure to tune half a step down for it to sound more like nirvana

    A.... B....

    Ava B
    It's fun to play.

    A.... B....

    Hope you did it.

  36. Z.... M....

Featuring Kurt Cobain on the feedback!

    Z.... M....

    AND Krist Novoselic on bass!

  37. A.... N....

i just came here from leadbelly..... tf

  38. M.... ....

    what was this recorded

    M.... ....

    ChainedCrows before Nevermind

  39. k.... s....

this was recorded by Jack Endino during the " Jury " sessions. It was a side project of Mark and Kurts. It features Kurt on backing vocals and guitar and Krist on bass and Mark Pickerel from the Screaming Trees on drums. It's awesome.

    k.... s....

I can definately hear Kurts voice

  40. M.... V....

Dark track with such dark lyrics! Never knew they did this version of Leadbelly's song! Sounds awesome!

    M.... V....

it's a folk song first recorded by Leadbelly but you're kind of right - this one follows his singing closely :)

  41. C.... c....

check his cover of cripple creek very cool.

  42. M.... J....

It has Kurt all over it...

  43. j.... ....

    these drums are fuckin awesome

  44. J.... K....

    With cobain

  45. J.... A....

Has anyone noticed there's a hidden lady voice singing during the bass intro in the first seconds of the song? It's probably from another song by a different artist, I wonder what song it is, I would like to listen to it

    J.... A....

listen to grey goose from nirvana, theres also a woman voice in the beginning of the song

    J.... A....

Jorge Astorga nirvana fans trivia time

    J.... A....

No way it was accidental man, the voice has to be intentional, a hidden detail that they wanted to include in the song

    J.... A....

I have listened to this on high volume a hundred times, and that hidden lady's voice is so well-hidden... I think it's the "Mandela effect" we're experiencing, as opposed to an actual lady's voice!

    J.... A....

Recording accidents do happen. At one point in Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon you can hear the Beatles recording in the next studio.

  46. c.... j....

Just imagine if Mark had of done a whole CD with Nirvana.

    c.... j....

+Federico Benavides Another what? Ball of heroin? That would make sense..

    c.... j....

+cliff jumper That would be awesome

    c.... j....

They should make one album together as Mark did with isobel campbell (2 albums or 3, if I am right?)

    c.... j....

cliff jumper yeah it absolutely would have sucked Mark lanegan has no place being on stage with Nirvana you know that dummy wake the fuck up

    c.... j....

Well, they formed a band called "The jury" or something like that... Before Nirvana and Screaming Trees I believe, 88 or so, but Mark and Kurt were natural leaders, and therefore this project failed... There is another version of a Leadbelly song called "It is a shame", and is played by that band...

  47. B.... ....

tried to hide behind my xl, red spotted on white sweater which she left for me to protect myself from cold weather, every time i heard this . from now on, i will quit smoking you. i guess i will.

  48. b.... d....

Honestly, this is pretty weak. In my opinion Cobain had so much more character in his voice than Lanegan. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so nobody is right or wrong when it comes to music but my ears definitely prefer to hear Kurt Cobain sing this song.

    b.... d....

+bob d Agreed. This is just... wow. It gets a little less grueling as it goes on but I'm not digging anything about it at all. It feels like they couldn't have gotten the tone of the song more wrong.

That's the most polite way I can think of to say that this sucks and it's terrible.

    b.... d....

+JR Miller A much better showcase of Lanegan's voice are his songs with Queens of the Stone Age. Check out This Lullaby or Hanging Tree if you want to hear what he can really do. Absolutely haunting and beautiful.

    b.... d....

But Kurt is singing in this.

  49. o.... ....

it sounds like Cobain does the back vocals. Anyone ? Anyone ?

    o.... ....

    FOR SUREEEEEE!!!!

    o.... ....

kurt is on backing vocals and guitar. Krist on Bass and Mark on vocals. I still have a tape and a cd now.

    o.... ....

    Yea was kurt

    o.... ....

2:40 and feedback the whole time was Kurt ❤

  50. M.... C....

Absolutely love this version, so dark.
    Lanegan's vocals are superb.

    M.... C....

I just listened to this for the first time, after digging Lead Belly's version recently. This one blows me away. It's awesome.

    M.... C....

    I haven't heard bad version - yet ^^

  51. h.... ....

1:24 kurt : shiver for me now

    h.... ....

+GGrunge222 It was mark who said it

    h.... ....

+GGrunge222 I remember people thought he said "kill her for me"

    h.... ....

    wjveryzer7985:
    Awesome. That's funny. That's so 90's.

I just recently listened to the Lead Belly version. It's funny what he does with the song -- he drops in little lines like "come on over here and shiver for me now, baby" in the middle of this dark melancholy. Weird, really.

Wikipedia has a good article on the topic. It's referred to there as "In the Pines," but explains it's really a bit of Americana, and has many titles. The most interesting thing I read is I found out what a "driving wheel" is. Adds a bit to the imagery, that one.

    h.... ....

  52. a.... ....

This is the song that Mark Lanegan and Nirvana covered. It is not a Nirvana song, or a Mark Lanegan song. It is a traditional song that Leadbelly was the first to record it. Lanegan and Cobain heard it and loved it.

    a.... ....

    You copied and pasted this

    a.... ....

    Ok bro, thanx👌

    a.... ....

No, it was recorded for the 1st time in 1926 by Doc Walsh.

    a.... ....

    @Beethoveniac 1926. Doc Walsh.

    a.... ....

@jdhed1 My bad. You're right. I was thinking of "Midnight Special".

  53. H.... E....

Wow is that Kurt Cobain? Oh wait no this is too shit

    H.... E....

Wtf Lanegan is the man.His solo stuff, his music with Isobel Campbell. He was in QOTSA ffs

    H.... E....

+Harry Evans Too experimental and non traditional for 13 year old emo Nirvana fans like yourself.

    H.... E....

+Harry Evans Also Kurt is on backing vocals and guitar so...

    H.... E....

    ハレルヤ W h i t e N o i s e 人生は無意味です Pahaha, OP is a fucking idiot.

  54. S.... L....

ohh moody as f**k love it....

  55. g.... ....

Did sounds like if Danzig was to cover Nirvana.

    g.... ....

I'd bloody love! to hear a Danzig cover of this...

  56. G.... G....

    in the Pines

  57. O.... ....

Can anyone tell me if there is an acoustic version of this by Mark Lanegan?

    O.... ....

Try Janel Drewis' version. It's acoustic and in my opinion absolutely great.

  58. e.... ....

sorry not trying to be mean just not a fan...

  59. M.... P....

let in sink into the x

  60. V.... G....

Great version... Krist Novoselic is on the bass, and Kurt on guitar...=) ;)

    V.... G....

Oh, my bad! Thanks for the info! =)

    V.... G....

@mike mexico lol, so your the dumass,

    V.... G....

@mike mexico Noup, this isin't the original version! The original version was performed by Leadbelly, well, but yes this isin't Nirvana, no Kurt, either Krist! It's Mark's cover of Leadbelly

    V.... G....

@Isaac Behar I know Cobain and Lanegan did do a cover of this together. May not be this version of the song exactly, and I may be crazy, but I seem to hear Cobain singing with Lanegan. Both voices sound different, so it can't both be Lanegan, and one sounds suspiciously like Cobain. I could be wrong, but it's whatever. Personally, I like Leadbelly's, Cobain's, and Lanegan's versions all in their own ways. I really don't have a favorite.

    V.... G....

+BlodTussi You're right. That's Cobain doing the backing vocals. And I could definitely tell that was him on guitar at the very end, with the shaky bend and vibrato that he did. He did that on quite a few songs.

  61. K.... P....

I notice all of the posts about Lead Belly.  He did not write the song, he was just one of the many covers, best in my opinion, although this is a very good updated version.  The song was written before Lead Belly was born, and the author, unfortunately has been lost to time.

    K.... P....

a bit like "whiskey in the jar", everyone thought thin Lizzie wrote it but the Dubliners recorded it first but is a old folk song

    K.... P....

yes. he was... it was anonymous around 1880's song...

    K.... P....

@Ayon Barua think about it someone that probably fought in the civil war was listening to this song at one time

    K.... P....

    @James Behrje on their walkman.

    K.... P....

@Daniel Leatherland nobody thought Lizzy wrote that. Quit saying stuff

  62. k.... ....

I've been 'You-tubing' covers of this song all afternoon- this wins!

  63. a.... ....

    Great heroin right there

    a.... ....

I bet uve never tried heroin......

    a.... ....

Well, I have. And that’s some great heroin 😉

  64. P.... G....

Let's give some credit to the original ... LEAD-BELLY ... This is such a powerful song that in the hands of a great vocalist like Mark or Kurt will always be a pleasure to listen to ...

    P.... G....

Leadbelly didn't write this song. It's a folk song that originates from somewhere in the 1800s.

  65. E.... S....

Famous author named Williams S. Burroughs introduced Lead Belly to Kurt Cobain and Kurt then showed it to Mark.

    E.... S....

He didn't meet Burrows til '93. Also this was recorded around '89-'90.

  66. S.... ....

I've always been a Nirvana appreciator, and just recently got into Mark. I was PLEASANTLY surprised when I found this while buzzed off my ass. You can distinctly hear both of them on here.

    S.... ....

    Buzzed off what?

  67. t.... n....

i am ok how are you im going back to the god justin bieber

  68. L.... ....

Are you 6 years of age, or just a trifle retarded?

  69. s.... ....

I just heard Kurt's version of this on Pandora yesterday. It's probably been 10 yrs since I heard this song, and it had always been Mark's version. They are both good, but I do think Mark has the better voice for this dark song.

  70. p.... ....

cobain played guitar on this track and he helped sing on this also. so do you think this song sucks now? or should you learn something about songs and music before bitching

  71. S.... ....

obie wersje różnią się od siebie, ale na swój sposób każda mi się podoba. Żeby nie wyjść na dyplomatę, powiem że pierwszy raz usłyszałem wersję Nirvany i to ją katowałem przez kilka dni...

  72. t.... n....

why does he sings like this did anyone caught his dick

  73. S.... ....

This version of the song appears on Mark Lanegan's first solo album "The Winding Sheet", which was released in 1990. Kurt Cobain was introduced to this song by Lanegan and is playing guitar on this track. Krist Novoselic is also playing bass on this track. Dave Grohl has called The Winding Sheet "one of the best albums of all time" and has said that it was a huge influence on Nirvana's 1993 MTV Unplugged concert.

  74. j.... @....

I like this version more then that of Nirvana yet when it comes to timing noone can reach Leadbelly's original version...Still love this version and thanx for posting...

  75. s.... ....

i know, but that is the order of who recorded, not for who is the author

  76. A.... S....

Where Did You Sleep Last Night" also known as "In The Pines" and "My Girl" is an American folk song dating from about the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian

    A.... S....

And the frist who covered it was Leadbelly

    A.... S....

@Sparrow Bebetozoo Doc Walsh was the 1st to record it in 1926.
That doesnt mean he was the 1st to "cover it" though. Definitely wasnt Leadbelly.

  77. s.... ....

wrong... LeadBelly, Mark lanegan and then Nirvana !!

  78. H.... Z....

There's a 'Kurdt Cobain' in the booklet.

  79. F.... ....

    mark lanegan

  80. R.... H....

I need to know who is all singing in this?

  81. R.... H....

wow i think the same way

  82. C.... L....

love it!!!! i shitted in my pants!!!!

  83. R.... T....

2 out of three of them are in this song silly xD

  84. D.... B....

Wtf are you talking man? No one said if they were "true" or "false" musicians, he only said that Krist and Kurt recorded some of the tracks for this album

  85. u.... ....

Dave not a true musician? Really? That is the stupidest thing I have heard. Whether or not you personally like Foo Fighters or not, that is just an ignorant statement.

  86. s.... l....

Not really. Dave is there with Muse and Nickelback, with his crappy band. These people up there, that you mentioned, are all true musicians.

  87. A.... ....

    yes ! :D

  88. I.... ....

Never heard this cover before, sound good though
but i think i'm hearing Kurt's voice on the refren.

  89. m.... ....

Kurt is singing some of the back up vocals isn't he? Sounds like he is.

    m.... ....

    mixmastermeeks he is

  90. M.... F....

my hat goes off to you, that would have been an amazing vibe in the studio with such great musicians of my time

  91. r.... ....

Yeah, It's important to note that even though Leadbelly did multiple versions of this song it is not written by him. It is a folk song and it's origin remains a mystery.

  92. b.... e....

the triffids did a version also..they even named their lp 'in the pines'. in fact its a deadcool indimusic festival held each year, in the pines at the uni of western australia. in case yuo were wondering!

  93. b.... ....

    i like kid cudi's version

  94. C.... C....

You all seem to think Leadbelly wrote this song. This song was around long before Leadbelly with various titles including "In The Pines" & "Black Gal". Lanegan & later Cobain cover Leadbelly's version. Bill Monroe recorded it as "In The Pines" and also guitar great Link Wray recorded it as "Georgia Pines" which is unfortunately unavailable on Youtube

    C.... C....

1st recording was in 1926 by Doc Walsh.

  95. N.... F....

Please refer to Kurts own live cover of this song, during the MTV acoustic set. They're both different in their own ways, but you can't sit there and tell me Cobain wasn't an excellent musician and performer.
Besides, the man likes him enough to do a cover with him.
So take the stick out of your ass.

  96. D.... H....

Cock Cobain sucks... Mark Lanegan can sings better than that shit.

  97. O.... ....

I have to disagree, i listened to so many versions of this song by now, and Nirvana even best the best Leadbelly version of the song, it's really at it's best acoustic, and nobody does it so good acoustic as Kurt at their Unplugged concert.

  98. d.... ....

sorry my english is bad. I understand this comment wrong

  99. A.... ....

dude I'm a huge Nirvana fan, but this one is far superior. More atmospheric, chilling, at times subtle, and overall brilliant
