This one makes me think of the West of Ireland where those eked a living from the sea. Could be Portugal or Scotland too. The song has a lovely Celtic sound. Also could represent lost love.

One of the greatest songs ever, about a man who loved his delicate wife very much, but she died, and he went through a long period of mourning.  Then a new love comes along and he re-enters life.  The ship is life and the deep dark sea is death.  And the photographs are lovely.

Stunning setting of photos to match the music. Reminds me a little of 'Local Hero'. Mark Knopfler has given me more pleasure across the years than any other musician or song writer and I always come back to his music

Stunning pictures, otrapintaplease. We live much of the time in Co. Clare, and can report that all that west coast of Ireland has wonderful scenery, full of atmosphere and inspiring emotional responses to their changing moods..

We heard Mark Knopfler at the great Chalke valley History Festival the weekend before last, just down the road from us here in Salisbury, held in a field in a lovely Wiltshire valley. Presenting with other musicians, but improvising and talking too. It was a magic gig, and unique – those versions will never be heard again, improvised as they were (and always are in live performance, I think). This was, I think, the last number in his repertoire, and Mark was beautifully accompanied by flute, fiddle etc.

OMG that was lovely! This music goes straight to the soul.

He is not an entertainer.  He is an "Artist".  His music can bring a tear to the most hardened of people.  A rare ability that is.  Yes indeed....he is a rare and most cherished gem.

WHO drowned?

Neither could I. I can always find a sense of calm and peace in his music. He often gives us a different perspective from which to view things. At times, that is something we all find ourselves in need of and it does indeed, help smooth those patchy rough spots on our road. He is a man of rare talent and he has my greatest admiration and respect.

I agree with everything you so beautifully said. I couldn't imagine my life without Marks music to smooth the rough spots.

I've listened to his music since I was a kid, I know exactly what you mean.

This man's music and words touch me like no other. In the words to so many of his songs, there is almost always beauty, sometimes deep sadness and quite often, truth. Sometimes all of the above. What each song means and how it affects us is so very personal to anyone who truly listens to those words. He has an inherent ability to tap into our emotions and gives us the gift to let them freely flow. Even the toughest of souls wouldn't stand a chance against it...if they truly listen.

I also had chills when hearing this live. So much emotions.

Chills when seeing this live. The song is sad and emotionally stirring enough as it is...but hearing "I'm a living man" in that hoarse, deathly whisper was a reminder of this legend's mortality.

Not at all ridiculous, I don't know how anyone can not cry hearing this. My daughter and I saw him in Madison and we both cried!

I never thought that I will get home sick. But listening to the song and looking at the moving pictures, I'm close to tears... and I'm so far away from home... yes I am...

I think another sailor on that same boat drowned. It may not be an ordinary accident since it was a windless night. Doesen't make sense. "You never were a steady bold one". This reveals a bit of his feelings toward the unfortunate victim. I think the sailor slept with the narrator's wife, or atleast tried to. "Now you lie alone, in the deep dark sea". This explains why. Later on the narrator says "Haul away for home". This states he can peacefully return home to his wife. An accident? I wonder.
