I feel like everyone in the comments is right, honestly. Just because she wrote it about her personal life of leaving her mom and sister that she'd lived with her entire life to go to another country and live with her dad whom she hated, doesn't mean it isn't applicable to pretty much every bad home situation. Orphans, runaways, children of divorced couples, children who live in houses where they're ignored, children who live in houses where they feel rejected, children who live in houses where they just plain feel they don't belong. I think it's so beautiful that Marina was able to write a song that so specifically and perfectly described the feeling all these people get spot-on, yet still made it broad enough that almost anybody could feel the pain that she is feeling not only by how well the poetry of it is and the gorgeous melody, but the fact we all have a piece of ourselves that has felt exactly like this no matter how wonderful or horrible our home lives were.

I personally identify with this song because of the feeling that i nver belong, i never felt like i actually belonged any where even though i have a family and i love my family i always feel like something is missing, like i am an outsider ( no pun intended) even with my family, my friends, my class, my squad, i just always feel out of place and diffrent and not in a good way, definitely not in a good way, like a rootless tree for some reason... and maybe im just trying to bend this song for my own problems...

This song tells exactly how I feel :/ My parents decided to divorce over 4 years ago & I had to move away with my mom & silblings. We lived at my grandads house for 2 years & it was horrible.. Now we live with mom's boyfriend, but it doesn't feel like a home.. My dad has changed so much.. We don't talk to each other since 2012. Everyone I loved showed a face I never wanted to see... I'm just so homesick for a place that doesn't exist anymore...

This hit home so hard. After the tragic passing of my Mum not long ago I definitely felt rootless especially because how young I am, Marina is so good at reaching out to people through her music.

Kinda makes me think of someone who was "forced" to live with their step father/mother, leaving a part of the family they loved behind them, and feeling rootless because they don't fit...

She moved to live with her father in Greece from 16-18 and previously lived with her mother in Wales for the entire time before 16.
