Listen: I generally love Marina, but I honestly hate the line “I fall asleep when they speak of all the calories they eat”, like cool, you’re bored of something that literally drives people to kill themselves and is associated with the most deadly psychological disorder in the world. I just don’t like how she’s treating some girls obsession with calories/weight gain as this shallow thing with nothing behind it except wanting to be attractive. There’s so much more to having a problematic relationship with food, for example it’s a coping mechanism for some, and it’s mostly about the feeling of being “in control”, even when your life is falling apart, so to me this line just seems ignorant.

I think you have misunderstood her. She is pointing out exactly what you said, that girls/women are socialized to be a certain way through media, education, social constructs, etc. In my opinion, she is saying that she sees the truth and all the institutions that support the "feminine ideal." She is saying that she sees it and she is not going to be what they want her to be. Other girls/women on the other hand, completely embrace that construct of female as a size zero, yogurt eating, flirty yet virgin-like, etc. She is saying that she cannot relate to those females, The song, again, in my opinion, should encourage you to be like Marina. Be yourself. Do not worry about what is popular and what society thinks a female should be. Look at her. If she had done ll that was expected of her, she would not be Marina today.
