Marillion - Warm Wet Circles Lyrics

On promenades where drunks propose to lonely arcade mannequins
Where ceremonies pause at the jeweller's shop display
Feigning casual silence in strained romantic interludes
Till they commit themselves to the muted journey home
And the pool player rests on another cue
Last nights hero picking up his dues
A honeymoon gambled on a ricochet
She's staring at the brochures at the holidays

Chalking up a name in your hometown
Standing all your mates to another round
Laughing at the world till the barman wipes away the warm wet circles
The warm wet circles

I saw teenage girls like gaudy moths
A classroom's shabby butterflies
Flirt in the glow of stranded telephone boxes
Planning white lace weddings from smeared hearts and token proclamations
Rolled from stolen lipsticks across the razored webs of glass
Sharing cigarettes with experience with her giggling jealous confidantes
She faithfully traces his name with quick bitten fingernails
Through the tears of condensation that'll cry through the night
As the glancing headlights of the last bus kiss adolescence goodbye
In a warm wet circle

Like a mothers kiss on your first broken heart, a warm wet circle
Like a bullet hole in Central Park, a warm wet circle
And I'll always surrender to the warm wet circles

She nervously undressed in the dancing beams of the Fidra lighthouse
Giving it all away before it's too late
She'll let a lovers tongue move in a warm wet circle
Giving it all away and showing no shame
She'll take a mother's kiss on her first broken heart a warm wet circle
She'll realise that she played her part in a warm wet circle

    Guitar solo amazing

Interesting Marillion fun fact: Steve used a capo on the 2nd fret live; musically speaking, you KNOW this isn’t live. Also, the guitar & bass are unplugged. It’s a truncated studio take created for TV appearances, nothing wrong with that. But it does suck it’s not live

  5. T.... ....

Wow this great to revisit this beautiful song after so my years what an artist Fish is and Rothery's guitar playing

  6. Z.... s....

Back then when Marillion were like a blooming jasmine that its odor blows anyone away, Fish at his prime was not just a best vocal and leading singer but one of the most brilliant poet!!

    so good

  16. T.... E....

I agree, seen them live many times so good, the mans a legend.

  17. C.... K....

The history behind this program is so great! The girl making the backing vocal is a figurinist covering a other singer that not appear in the show.

  18. r.... a....

Thu unique voice from marillion ...is ...mister....fish ...

  19. S.... B....

I am so surprised that Fish allowed this to happen. Miming, not plugged in and discs on the drums. Mariilion in the day didn't need to mime, they were sheer class and performed perfectly, i should know, i saw them 49 times from there inception as Silmarillion supporting Wild Willy Barrett and John Otway support from Cruise at the Aylesbury Friars back in the day. Fish, please rejoin, if for only 1 gig to make my 50th.

The is brutal. Terrible songwriting, and not just this song. I've been trying to find something I like by this band but it is futile. Ciao, Marillion.

I Have Stared At Many Warm Wet Circles........With The Comfort And Warmth Of A Dimly Lit Bar And Friendly Drinkers..........Though The Dreaded Sound Of The Last Order Bell Always Lingering In The Back Of Drink Fueled Thoughts.........I Don't Want The Night To End......Please Don't End........But Wait....It's Ok ...The Quiet Words Of A Lock In Are Floating In The Smokey Air......I Am Saved From The Sobering Cold Air.............At Least For Now.........Another Pint Of Lager .......Please...Thank You.

  23. A.... ....

Hands down the best song of 1987.

  24. t.... ....

    one of my favourites

  25. R.... K....

I think this is the most beautiful, most poetic, most powerful, most romantic, most evocative track in all the annals of prog history

  26. D.... H....

Genius. Pure genius. Fish is one of the most under-rated writers of our time.

  27. A.... E....

O vocal no final da música me lembra o Phil Colins...

  28. S.... E....

Masterful track and from their best ever LP.

  29. E.... G....

    JX8P... Ah the days...

  30. F.... M....

Marillion without Fish, just a band. Marillion whith Fish, an eternal good dream.

  31. J.... P....

Although the music on this album is cheerful with warm/cold taste, lyrically this is the most saddest album ever written. I can't find something equally authentic and current as this.

  32. I.... N....

Love this band, off to see fish this week, can't wait.. I know his voice ain't what it was, but he's still fish.. #LEGEND

  33. H.... C....

    Sublime and unequaled.

  39. L.... E....

Who the heck is that backup singer? Is that Tessa Niles? Could watch her all day. Rothery is easily in my top 5 guitarists.

  40. J.... M....

How good was that performance? Clutching at straws is a masterpiece

  41. L.... F....

Love the "real" Marillion....which is with Fish. Glad I came here...I missed listening to this. True powerful art rock.

  42. G.... T....

Off my favourite album of all time .

  43. G.... J....

THE VERY BEST 👍 Shame the talented lead guitarist Steve became a complete lard arse. But still plays good over his gigantic belly.

  44. L.... M....

I loved This band ...when Fish left ...so did I

  55. W.... P....

Hello, do you know the name of the chorister in the background who sings with the singer fish? Thank you for your answer Gilles

  56. p.... j....

80s shoulder pads in suits , making fish look like frankenstein. still an amazing poet

  57. t.... ....

    Love this song!

    Marillion are awesome!

  58. B.... I....

    FISH 's haircut is brilliant!What a voice,what a talent!

  59. H.... ....

Who's doing the backing vocals ? On the album, it was Tessa Niles, but I don't think that her here. Quite a job to support Fish :)

  60. G.... H....

wow he look almost identical to lead singer from Black Sabbath late 80 early 90s named Tony Martin wow

  61. p.... b....

song title sounds almost pornographic, I like it, I like it a lot

  62. R.... J....

    Playback

  63. J.... V....

Silmarillion - the best band ever.

  64. N.... ....

Clutching At Straws - poet Fish's most mature work.👍👍👍👍

    N.... ....

I totally agree, clutching at straws was their most amazing contribution

  65. M.... K....

Why doens't this extremely beautiful song have more clicks than "Easter"? - I don't understand ....

  66. R.... H....

the best vokal love you fish

  67. T.... ....

I love this band so much.

  68. M.... W....

Every Fish era Marillion song sounds like a Cheers sound track

  69. Z.... T....

Fish went out on a masterpiece

  70. A.... M....

    Wonderful Marillion!!!!

  71. G.... J....

Great song, but funny video with that gal on stage with them.

  72. A.... G....

    Derek Dick: wonderful rock voice.

  73. L.... ....

    шикарная песня, шикарная группа.... была

  74. S.... ....

    'Warm wet circles'. Oh dear

  75. C.... S....

Love the song, but seeing instruments totally unplugged......those times were playback was the safest TV stations could do....

  76. I.... ....

No one won when fish went solo. This music was so special. ..I saw this tour at a little club in NYC never knowing very soon after fish was gone...even though I bought many new from Fish...I personally feel his work with Marilloin was his best

  77. A.... S....

    bellissimo

  78. C.... ....

    is this about piss stains??

  79. G.... W....

This was recorded (lipsync) on the German TV Show "Na Siehste!" on November 30, 1987. "Na Siehste" means something like "there you go" or "well, you see?".

  80. W.... C....

Great lyric - reminds me of Bernie Taupin

  81. M.... D....

First i was shocked, cause I thought "Fish" died. But I think it had been "personal differences" why they go apart.

  82. A.... S....

Fish can get a job in hollywood playing Chris Hemsworth's dad.

  83. s.... ....

it sounds too perfect. It must by playback

  84. X.... ....

Rothery is too underrated. At the same time, I will say that he and Steve Hackett have a very similar sound. Ideal in the planet of Progressia!

  85. c.... ....

Is that chic Tessa Niles ?

  86. J.... P....

So is this basically a song about pussy?

  87. g.... ....

Total crap it's synched to a playback FFS. You would think they would at least make the effort and wire the guitars. They're playing you for suckers.

  88. D.... M....

Need to rewind back to 80s, is it possibile?

  89. N.... A....

    That Rothery solo...

  90. j.... ....

They sound worse than they look .

  91. f.... ....

Who's the genius who stretched the picture ? This footage is 4:3 not 16:5 ! Also, pity that this is not live sound but studio audio.

    f.... ....

Casting it to your tv set will enable you to watch with correct aspect ratio

  92. M.... M....

Fish is an old man now well passed his sell by date thankfully Marillion now have the amazing talented Steve Hogarth

  93. p.... z....

in fact he could be a secret sohn of Demis Rusos aparently the same look and prefernce of clothes and this lyric sound and romantic dreams

  94. J.... B....

Looks like a WWF wrestler got a side job singing in a wedding band.

  95. S.... ....

This is my favourite piece of poetry..

A spider wanders aimlessly within the warmth of a shadow
Not the regal creature of border caves
But the poor, misguided, directionless familiar
    Of some obscure Scottish poet

The mist crawls from the canal
Like some primordial phantom of romance
To curl, under a cascade of neon pollen
While I sit tied to the phone like an expectant father
Your carnation will rot in a vase.
