I was 13 when this song came out, and I would play it on my turntable day in and day out. This is still my favorite Marillion song to date, probably because it's the one that made me truly fall in love with the band. The album also marked a change of tone for the band, with their new frontman "H". What a great track still.

Isn't the first-footer, the first person to enter your house in the new year and you are obliged to give them food and drink until they've had the their fill? Wouldn't a 15 stone person be one who that took too much, so you'd prefer a much smaller person, so there would be more left for everyone else?

Even though i was born in 1989, hence, can't know how things were, the Seasons End album is to me how it was, or the good stuff, and the warm feeling of the era.
It's change, it's autumny, but it is like something good will happen very soon, it really will.

Never would have guessed this song was about HIV too, even though I know the lyrics by hard. I strongly disagree with the ppl saying that the video is bad, since I think the idea behind a dim lighted, dusty and somewhat creepy room depicts the protagonist's feelings.

h said it was nothing to do with HIV or AIDS. He told us it was that one person who always nags your ear amd you can't shake them or yourself karma coming to bite you.

 Exactly.I always thought it was a sly dig at Fish as most people wouldnt know what a first-footer was unless you were Scottish or from the North. To add to your quote he should be carrying a piece of coal otherwise it doesnt count :) Slainte !

I always thought it was about guilty conscience and your inner demons, never about HIV!

It's certainly _inspired_ by AIDS, but not necessarily entirely _about_ AIDS. It's also about unwanted intrusion into your life, and people trying to build walls around themselves in the delusion to bad things only happen to other people. It's also been suggested that not everyone involved was on the same page as to what the song was about.
