Marillion - Afraid Of Sunlight Lyrics

Drive the road to your surrender
Time comes around... out of my hands
Small boats on the beach at the dead of night
Come and go before first light
Leave me running in the wheel
King of the world
How do you feel?
What is there to feel?

So how do we now come to be
Afraid of sunlight?
Tell me girl why you and me
Scared of sunlight?

Been in pain for so long
I can't even say what hurts anymore
I will leave you alone
I will deny
I will leave you to bleed
I will leave you with your life

So how do we now come to be
Afraid of sunlight?
Tell me girl why you and me
Scared of sunlight?

All your spirit rack abuses
Come to haunt you back by day
All your Byzantine excuses
Given time, given you away

Don't be surprised when daylight comes
To find that memory prick your thumbs
You'll tell them where we run to hide
I'm already dead
It's a matter of time

So how do we now come to be
Afraid of sunlight
How do we now come to be
Afraid of sunlight

Day-Glo Jesus on the dash
Chalk marks on the road ahead
Friendly fire in hostile waters
Keep the faith
Don't lose your head

So how do we now come to be?

Marillion Afraid Of Sunlight Comments

The Greatest Post Fish Track from Possibly their best album full stop. What a wonderful band Marillion are with Fish or Steve, just mesmerising & this track is a fine fine example. How did they not become megastars with tracks like this & Beautiful?

  2. K.... M....

The original recording of these discs is much better than the remastered one; all those wonderful noises are gone. I guess that I will have to find a used copy since mine was stolen. I will have to get my paws on my Amazon order history for the purpose of figuring out exactly what was stolen.

Saw the guys last night on the afraid of sunlight tour. Awesome doesn't begin to sum them up.
Thank you Marillion.....for one of the most memorable nights of my life 🥰

I saw the guys two days ago in Stuttgart. Brilliant! Such beautiful and inspiring music in front of a crowd of nearly 2.000 People. So many memories, so many emotions. But you know what? I was there, when this song came out, when they toured with Afraid Of Sunlight, and when it was oh so hip to hate them, to stubbornly and stupidly rave about whether Steve Hogarth was valid replacement for Fish and all this shit (I can't believe, some people still go on about this subject). Music magazines mocked and despised them. German MusikExpress rated the album 2 out of 6 stars. Only to three years later refer to it as a kind of classic when then bashing Radiation. Fans and critics likewise loathed Cannibal Surf Babe (why not, it's not my favourite either) but apparently overlooked the majesty and beauty of Out Of This World or the title track of the Album - the one you've come to listen to here :-).
I was there in the mid 90's - and I loved it! Every second of it! I was soaring! There was a fantastic band with an equally fantastic album, great pieces of music, standout tracks throughout their concert history ever since. A crowd - well, call it a crowd! - a group of perhaps 150 max. people where there with me, who'd kept the faith and had open ears and hearts and minds. And although that night quite some things went wrong (for example Rothery's guitar quit during the final chords to Hooks In You), I'd witnessed an amazing concert, musically, artistically and atmospherically.
Afraid Of Sunlight has been a favourite of mine since its release. It truly has a magic spark to it. Timeless beauty, I think.
It's great to still see the guys around, getting some well-deserved recognition after many years of ongoing re-invention. And while their last few albums didn't reach me as deeply as some others in the past did (namely Marbles), they're still working on themselves, developing, trying out new ideas. Which is what an artist should do. Long may they go on! Bravo Marillion.

    Wonderful

  23. A.... R....

Just listened and remember Hogarth singing this at Richmond North Yorkshire Fest years ago, I was well oiled but God he sang the absolute shit out of this song, a friend nearby could not believe her ears! Fish is a better lyricist by miles but Steve wipes the floor with Fish in singing ability and I'm sure Fish would agree? no disrespect to the great man! The emotion in that voice is frightening ! People think Adele has emotion she clearly has not one ounce, Steve is fucking drowning in the stuff!

Since the departure of Fish and the arriving of Steve Hogarth, their music has got more powerfull, great tone and the lyrics are great too. I do like the Fish era and all the albums they made but Marillion speaks more to me since over 25 years...

    J.... R....

Some oldies claim fish over hograth... Its just a controlled behaviour.

Incase if hograth had started his own band and sang his songs.... Even those critics wouldve liked it.

  26. w.... ....

I saw Marillion yesterday in London, it was one of the most wonderful experiences!

  27. E.... S....

    The Band of Bands !!

  28. P.... P....

I've read so many Hogarth ranting posts in my life it's sickening. He's fucking awesome singer and i'm glad i've had pleasure to enjoy it for decades now.

  29. E.... S....

Marillion by far is one of the best bands of all times ...if not the best of all their music and words are just pure poetry in motion ....a total ear-gasm !

  30. M.... M....

Marillion hrají skvěle,k tomu hlas a emocionální vyjáření Steva.....k tomu není co dodat.Marillion pokaždé jiný,pokaždé přkvapuijící a POKAŽDÉ OJEDINĚLÝ---

  38. C.... ....

I think that lyrics have deeper meaning.

    C.... ....

    What do the lyrics mean?

    C.... ....

Anything that you want them to mean it could be about something that you are going through in your life or someone that you know or care about it is really up to you what they meant

  39. P.... L....

My happiest memories...always Stevie..High Wycombe?? maybe..definately a uni in wales..when we Escaped from RAF Northolt!! lolol..We stayed in Mumbles!! too hilarious. But we went somewhere in Bucks as well. P xx

  40. K.... W....

    Mistrzostwo Świata !!!

  41. a.... ....

Seriously can't understand why some people hate Hogarth so much... In my opinion, he's a lot better singer than Fish. Not that Fish wasn't great as well, but Hogarth's just much more versatile in his singing.

    a.... ....

I'm also older and glad to hear you do not fall into this common trap! Here is one of my favorite quotes.
“I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
    1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
    2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
    3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.” Douglas Adams

    a.... ....

I agree with you. it says a lot when Fish was actually the 2nd singer and only lasted 6-7 years whilst Hogarth is still in the band after nearly 30 years its like the Fish preferers are stuck in a timezone. I feel like Fish Marillion and Hogarth Marillion are like 2 different bands. Besides which Marillion aren't the only band who have had to change lead singers in their career.

    a.... ....

agree with you. I think some of the "prog snobs" blame Hogarth for Marillion "not being as progressive" as they were with Fish :-) I'm a die hard prog junkie but I like the Hogarth stuff quite a bit.

    a.... ....

I think I'll prefer Fish's lyrical genius. The man's a poet. But yeah, Hogarth hits those wonderful notes.

  42. K.... M....

    Beautiful song <3

  43. c.... ....

Best song off an album with all best songs.
Used to miss Fish but Hogarth can sing the shit out of a song.

    c.... ....

    u r rite

    c.... ....

Yes but Hogarth is so theatrical! Epically!

    c.... ....

Hogarth is the reason I got into Marillion. After hearing This Strange Engine, I was hooked on his voice and emotion. I did of course eventually get into Fish era and love that as well, for totally different reasons. But I love Hogarth's guts.

    c.... ....

crazyfeline H brought this band back to life.

dont tell people how to comment,on something they have an opinion on,just like you had one .....eh...no one said this was metal as marillion have always been a great , \m/..rock band...\m/ thats why the rock horns have been put there,a sign of appreciation.

  57. D.... ....

Don't ruin the comment with the '\m/' because it's not metal.

  58. P.... ....

This song hits me to my core every time I listen. It's sheer depth and beauty is otherworldly.

  59. D.... F....

How could you not like this song??

  60. W.... ....

Yeah man, I didn't start listening to porcupine tree until just recently. I am a very big fan now though and they are definitely up there with Marillion when it comes to taking me to other places.

    Hello Marillion people :-)

What a truly amazing band, I`ve been following them for many many years, and now, they are better than ever before!...
See you all at the Christmas tour, going to all three nights, I`ll be the fifty year old (and getting younger) at the front with tears in my eyes, and joy in my heart!!

    Bless you Marillion x

My favourite song. :) It calms down and relax. :) My father had shown me this song and I fallen love in Marillion... :)

  78. f.... g....

@azapro911 Yeah, Dave Gilmour isn't Syd Barrett and thank fuck for that! Barrett was brutal

  79. M.... ....

@MKLPTR Aye, I've heard good things about Brave. My brother has it somewhere, although I won't actually be back home for another two weeks so I'll have to wait until then. I guess I could hear it on YT but the sound quality isn't brilliant then.

  80. m.... ....

    Love Marillion ♥♥♥

  81. F.... n....

Yes, this is the best they made so far !

  82. M.... ....

There's something about this song which means it's impossible to listen to it without just turning the volume up and up and up.

Also Pete Gabriel's Here Comes The Flood is like that for me.

I should really listen to Marillion more often though, I only know the things my dad plays in the car and my brother plays in his room.

  83. a.... ....

So, people say that Steve Hogath simply isn't Fish. Well, Dave Gilmour isn't Syd Barrett, but I'd say he ended up doing a pretty good job.

    a.... ....

    azapro911 So true.

    a.... ....

but when Waters left Floyd, they died and have been dead ever since.
