Marianne Faithfull - Visions Of Johanna Lyrics

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "jeeze
I can't find my knees"

Jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel

The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "name me someone who's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still hasn't showed
We see the empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps on the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish trucks that load
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain

Underrated song?? One of the very best from his best period. She does a great job, but no one can match Dylan's sardonic sneer.

  15. S.... M....

Did you ever see a more beautiful picture of a lovely girl? If I'd taken that I'd despair of equalling it, never mind exceeding. And that sweet voice.

  16. T.... ....

WOW!, best version since the original. I dunno how the hell I missed this one, I have heard at least a hundred covers by people who try to soften it up and it just sounds pathetic! this is not a love song, it's a sorry for yourself and alone love song. Best version , like I stated. My dad played me this song first time we drank together, I talked about my panic attacks and he said its alright, Dylan had them too. 1 AM with the lights off, laying down with a cigarette. This will make you feel better son, just have another beer lay back and listen to the blonde on blonde album

  17. A.... B....

Wow! She really channels the beautiful and haunting imagery that Dylan so powerfully communicated on "Blonde On Blonde". Also couldn't help thinking about her relationship with "The Rolling Stones" when she sang the line "jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule" which the Stones payed tribute to the image on the cover photo of their classic live album "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out".

  18. A.... H....

I love this version - her voice with his words

  19. A.... M....

Perfection, A wonderful version of one of Dylan's most underrated songs, easily my favourite track on Blonde on Blonde.

    A.... M....

    M.... H....

    Trump ?

    M.... H....

@ThePartienmer could you expand on that please

  29. C.... V....

Apart from Bob this is the best rendition .

    C.... V....

including Dylan, this is the best version

  30. G.... D....

  31. m.... r....

She was so beautiful The voice was gorgeous as well. All gone now.

    m.... r....

Not all gone, you can close your eyes and listen and ... :)

  32. A.... L....

Eccellente Marianne Faithfull, un brano difficile da eseguire per l'inevitabile confronto con la versione originale, questa regge bene il confronto.

  33. B.... R....

Quelle belle émotion dans la voix de la sublime Marianne !!!!!

  34. j.... s....

Yes, she's doing a great job! Thank you.

  35. T.... R....

I couldn't come close to choosing a favorite Dylan song, but I can say I think this is the best song on "Blonde on Blonde. And that's saying a lot considering how good the writing is on that album. I don't really approve of the institution of poet laureate and I'm skeptical of the phrase "best of all time." But I'm also not above a little hypocrisy and admit that I think it's really cool that the British poet laureate Andrew Motion (great name) says this is the greatest song lyric of all time.

  36. P.... D....

She could be smoking hot with this rendition of Dylan's classic, conjures up the essential 60's love in , laid back and hot.

  37. J.... A....

"...and these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind." Beautiful.

  38. E.... H....

Beautiful. It seems to be a song that is best with minimal instrumentation, and this rendition does it perfectly. This song is by a poet contemplating in solitude about lost love, so a quiet rendition is best.

  39. D.... B....

I'm surprised at how much I like this version...

  40. C.... S....

    Brilliant.

  41. j.... s....

The Keeper of Her Own Tits. This is an American song, go back to Berkshire or wherever.

    j.... s....

yeah, you're jealous, jaye. Go crawl back under your rock

  42. m.... w....

    excellent

  43. J.... S....

This is way you should never try this if your name isnt Dylan Bob! PAINFUL!

    J.... S....

wow you couldn't be more wrong. duna

    J.... S....

    Bullshit , it’s a great version , music isn’t a fucking competition it’s interpretation

    J.... S....

@Pat Downs Maybe she does know, they ran in the same circles in the 60's. I'm pretty sure Johanna is representing Joan Baez as a start.

    J.... S....

Songs are made to be sung, if you don’t like it don’t listen

    J.... S....

Who are you? Dylan police?? "You can´t do a version of a Bob song!.."

  44. S.... C....

Wish she sang all the verses in the Dylan original.

    S.... C....

the karokee machine didnt have room

    S.... C....

jamie , you're just jealous you will never even be good enough for karaoke. You can't even spell it, loser lol

  45. T.... ....

This is lovely, Marianne doing full justice to Bob Dylon's magical song.

    T.... ....

doing justice? She stole it. She sings it like she wrote it. I so love Marianne.

    T.... ....

Sir, have you been born at the year of the outbreak of WWII?

  46. G.... 3....

    Great version. Owned.

  47. G.... B....

Very Faithfull... too Dylans fine creation - I just love this

  48. J.... H....

    Magnifique d'émotion

  49. J.... H....

im soo impresed that there on comments here love marrianne

  50. J.... B....

But why in Hell and why in Heaven and why on earth do we want a “best” version?
And why in Hell and why in Heaven and why on earth couldn't we have several orgasms in one single song?
And who in Hell and who in Heaven and who on earth pretends to be smart enough to tell us what makes poetry?

    J.... B....

    Oh, FFS

    J.... B....

    Calm down Plato

  51. J.... B....

The combo of key, chord progression and strumming pattern is about the best I've heard. Seems to be in B flat; great rendition.

  52. H.... W....

WOW :-O I never knew that she ... Friggin' great

  53. b.... ....

  54. J.... B....

    That'll do

  55. G.... D....

Merci pour ce passage après la suppression de son tube. Sa version est plus claire que celle de Dylan (que j'aime malgré tout)

  56. K.... G....

    Best version of this music.
