Marianne Faithfull - If I Never Get To Love You Lyrics
If I never get to love you
It won't be that I didn't try
I'll be trying to possess you
Till the day I die
It won't be that I ran away
For as long as you will have me
Close to you, I'll stay
What I wouldn't give to hold you tight
Never, never let you out of sight
Be the one you give your first kiss every morning
The last one you kiss goodnight
If I never get to love you
There is nothing that I want more
Or I need more
And my heart would surely break in two
If I never get to love you
What I wouldn't give to hold you tight
Never, never let you out of sight
Be the one you give your first kiss every morning
The last one you kiss goodnight
If I never get to love you
It won't be that I didn't care
There is nothing that I want more
Or I need more
And my heart could surely break in two
If I never get to love you

Ahh, the pre-Mick Jagger Marianne Faithfull.
@garyalee What I mean is that her style of music changed during her relationship with Mick.
That's not exactly true. She was not Jagger's girlfriend at that time. Faithfull was discovered when her boyfriend John Dunbar took her to a launch party of the Rolling Stones in early '64 and there she met Andrew Loog Oldham who was charmed by her and offered her a recording contract. As Oldham was the Rolling Stones' manager back then, he had Jagger and Richards write "As Tears Go By" for her. Faithfull married John Dunbar in 1965 and then left him in early '66 for Mick Jagger.
But what about "Broken English"? Didn't a later song like that show the influence that Jagger had on Faithfull?
What I actually meant to say was that she was not signed because she was Mick Jagger's girlfriend as someone stated earlier, as she was not at that point in time. She became Jagger's girlfriend in late '65, early '66.
She was not very productive during the Stones years. It probably formed something for her artistic future and was good for something. It's like Picasso when he painted a picture in two minutes and wanted a million dollars for it. It took you only two minutes to paint... they said, but Picasso said that it had taken him forty years to get there. You can't really measure art in working 9-5.
The most haunting and beautiful melody she ever recorded.
does anyhone know who played on this LP beautiful work
I bought her "As Tears Go By" album, when I was 16, and I discovered this short little gem by mistake. Her pure and tender voice overcomes parts of the unremarkable rhymes and gushy sentimentality. Back then, I was too embarassed to tell any of my peers I liked it, but now I'm 65, my audience is scattered and vanishing, and the world seems doomed. It's one of those songs that someone had to write in order to move on to the next level of growing up.
