Manilow, Barry - Sailing Lyrics

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Manilow, Barry Sailing Comments

Never was a fan of the original version, but this one is what the song should have been and it took Barry Manilow to fulfil it's potential. Great rendition and arrangements Barry.

    Great interpretation, I love it

  4. Janeen

    Better than original

It's smooth, orchestra and Barry's voice, not like the original more gentle and heartfelt 🙂

Oh, my God, what gutters has Manilow dragged his voice to? I was SO looking forward to Barry's velvety chops bringing some new light into this timeless song. But this weak, hacked attempt is so BAD, so un-inspired in production, that the whole thing sounds like a fan-made home-recording on cheap-as Radio Shack equipment. The the DOUBLE key-shift climax finishes off the life of the song by creating a frenzied crescendo when the song was actually supposed to be about inner-peace and, um----Tranquility! This cover is a travesty in every way possible. I'm devastated. Even the actual key of the song as been altered! I better get back to Christopher Cross and begin the healing. His original "Sailing" is one of most healing songs i can think of. Just listen to it.

@Jeff Rhoades I DO agree that it's a beautifully done recording. What i'm saying is that that fact doesn't change how BAD this version is. It's like when certain Romantic Composers tried to fluff-up Bach and Mozart pieces with arrangements that turned it into nothing but sentiment. So, my comment ("shallow" as it may be) is that Mannilow turns a truly sentimental classic song and reduces it to lukewarm, sentimental drivel. It's obvious that Mannilow's entire album here was made to generate sales (to a small and particular audience, as yourself, to boot). Anne Murray did the same thing in her old age, and the results were almost as bad. And i say this as GREAT Mannilow fan! Mannilow is one of the few voices i've ever heard that sounds like it's DOUBLED. A technique only possible in the studio.
