Manic Street Preachers - Slash N' Burn Lyrics

You need your stars, even killers have prestige
Access to a living you will not see
24 boredom, I'm convicted instantly
Gorgeous poverty of created needs

Slash and burn
Kill to live
Kill for kicks
3rd world to the 1st
Kill to live

Worms in the garden more real than a McDonalds
Drain your blood and let the Exxon spill in
Look around here, you see nothing is very real
Chained to economy now famine has been

Slash and burn
Kill to live
Kill for kicks
3rd world to the 1st
Kill to live

That's all you need
That's all you need
That's all you need
That's all you need

Madonna drinks Coke and so you can too
Taste's real good not like a sweet poison should
Too much comfort to get decadent
Politics here's death and God is safer sex

Slash and burn
Kill to live
Kill for kicks
3rd world to the 1st
Kill to live
Kill for kicks

Slash and burn
Kill to live
Kill for kicks
3rd world to the 1st
Kill to live

That's all you need
That's all you need
That's all you need
That's all you need

Saw them only a few weeks ago opening up for Bon Jovi. MSP kicked serious arse. Still going strong.

    Virgil Hilts

Oh yay. Had GT on loud in the car today👌

  10. choclatesaltyballz

I hope they play this at the end of the month 😁

  11. Goddess On Earth

Cheap bitches? Anyone? Flowers and worst fuck ever sticker included.

  12. Amanda Hanman

Jdb = lush, that body though. Love the manics soooo much xxx

    Virgil Hilts

I know- lush. 28 years have passed, but i’d still like a crack! Oh 28 yrs have passed for me too..if he is ever up Treorchy way .......

  13. IchBin Vegetarische

Great rocker, but one accents the MIDDLE syllable of "MacDonald's".

  14. Dermacrosis

A friend of mine introduced me to these guys and I said to him I would have JDB anyday of the week and he was "Why?". I told him to check out this vid and he came back "I would too". He was too late I had first dibs. :-)

  15. Virgil Hilts

Phwoar- I’ll ‘ave some of that. I wonder if JDB ever goes up Treorchy way?

    Dermacrosis

Me first as I bet I am older, dear god I can't believe I played the age card :-D It is my only trump card and as the saying goes age before beauty, god I wish :-D

    Virgil Hilts

LOL- I am the same age, born the same year as JDB, AND, same area with same accent- does that count!! Or we could just dream- I do believe in unicorns and winning the lottery.........

    Dermacrosis

Well I lost that bet as I was born four years before Kate Bush hit the charts. Oh well silk purse before a sows ear comes into play, in your favour. Damn do we have some nasty sayings passing themselves off as compliments :-)

How could you believe in that fantasy? I mean winning the lottery, Unicorns on the other hand do exist :-D

We can always dream as long as in it he doesn't ask for a threesome, then it becomes a nightmare for one of us, and I am not talking about me :-)

    Virgil Hilts

LOL- been fun dreaming with you. 3some defo not my thing🤮. If you can’t dream and laugh what can you do eh. All the best

    Dermacrosis

Not my thing either, what can I say I am selfish :-)

"If you can’t dream and laugh what can you do eh"

If you can't do either of them then it is time to give up on life. That is coming from a pessimist of all people :-D

    The same to you hun.

James Dean Bradfield is a fine example of the SWOLETARIAT here.

    Dermacrosis

    ?????????

    L192

    @Dermacrosis

Muscle/ripped, proletarian. Combined as part of the swoletariat.

If we can't make left wing in jokes for a band who have always referenced left wing politics. When can we?

    Dermacrosis

I didn't say you can't. Your first line sort of cleared up my confusion. THat is a term I have nevr seen before.

Though I am still at a loss who muscled/ripped leads to the "SWOL" part, I could see it with "Muritariat". Maybe it is because I am an old foggie now so am not seeing it. If so that is totally my fault.

  19. Diana Kahn-Dahl

Awesome jam. I first heard this album in 1991 or 92 when my bro Steven bought put it on trying to impress his new girlfriend Jane at the time, lol. Mind you I was trying to sleep next door at the time and all I hear is him blasting "Motorcycle Emptiness" I was like what on earth is that he's playing now, but when I heard Slash 'N' Burn I thought it was pretty cool.

  24. William Evans

Sorry but this is one of those songs where I say lyrics whatever its all about the guitar riff its an absolutely belter.

Ayesha Asma now I feel old

I think I was 13 when I heard this for the first time

They played A Design For Life on a late night radio show and I wanted to get the album it was from. As a surprise, mum bought a Manics album for me, it was this one

So thankful she bought the wrong one lol, this was a massive part of my kidulthood! So many road trips were made so much easier

Some say this album influenced me...

  40. Kyle Valdes

this really isnt metal, its just brit pop or indie rock as youd say...its really a bunch of indie kids who loved hair metal..i still do love the manics..and i do also love their later stuff too.

    B A S E D SBG SOLDIER

I'm sure youve heard the whole Goa, India rumors by now, but quite a number of people swear by it him living in Goa somewhere.. I believe it to be honest. He was a cultured man. I could see him wanting to get away from the mundane of Cardiff to go to India or some islands somewhere. Most of all though, I just don't think he committed suicide. Seemed out of character.

    Mojopin 70

Absolute nonsense, he had already attempted suicide at least once before he finally disappeared, Goa as James Dean Bradfield said is ' b movie terrority' who are you to think you know more than someone who grew up with him...

    Michael Graham

    @Mojopin 70 Get over yourself

    Virgil Hilts

I think he was in so much pain, he wanted to stop that storm in his head anyway anyhow. I cry to think about it. Nobody has or hasn’t got the temperament for it-whatever a temperament is. The guy was seriously ill.

  46. isabelayla

    OMG he's so HOT !!!

  47. Sergio rubio ortiz

Was Richie such a good guitarist?

    Dash Spaceski

    @Sergio rubio ortiz
Ok I understand. There are some official pages with good info out there. I have a book on them. Which is where I found out. Richie wrote most of the music. He especially wrote the best songs. Nicky played Bass well. So I can't pick him on that. I guess Richie wanted to still be on stage with them. JDB played the lead very very well. If you want good info have a look at the MSP site they are brutally honest... Also interviews on You tube. There is even a documentary you could find more answers in. Peace. Dash.

    unattach

Richey did not write a single note of music in all the time he was with the band. You can check any of the booklets of their recordings for that. He wrote their lyrics, with Nicky. They've said themselves in interviews that Richey didn't have much of a talent for music and was not what you'd consider a "good guitarist." He only played rhythm guitar if anything.
Why would they want "such a bad guitarist"? Because even though he couldn't play music, Richey was a brilliant lyricist and all four of them had been extremely close friends since childhood. They've always had their own values they believed in, and in that sense, the Manics as a whole were really not just a band but more of a "work of art" (a Gesamtkunstwerk if you will) which was unimaginable without Richey. If you take the time to look at their music videos from the time with Richey, read interviews they've given then and later and articles written about them, you'll understand.
Regarding Nicky, he has said numerous times himself - again in interviews - that he was sh*t at playing the bass, claiming James often played it on their recordings, but it seems likely that he was just downplaying his ability.
As for the story of whether they didn't even plug Richey in or turned his volume down, I wasn't there so I don't know, but it's a story that has been around for a very, very long time and is also mentioned in Simon Price's Manic Street Preachers biography "Everything." It's also well-known that Richey wasn't always sober on stage, which likely didn't affect his ability to play the guitar positively.
So, there's your facts. Now you get to make up your own mind about that. Or, you could of course always ask /them/ these questions. I hear Nicky is quite active on Twitter.

    Dash Spaceski

He wrote most of the lyrics... (not music yes.) I don't know why I used the wrong word there. The best music used his lyrics. Peace.

    Nicole White

So he was like Sid Vicious but like, with brains. (and also probably didn't play the saxophone in middle school band)

    72 30 36 90 126

In the early days they turned his guitar down in the mix, and he only contributed guitar parts to two of their songs in the studio. This is well documented. He still had a say in the musical direction so in that way he sort of played the role of producer. Later, touring for "The Holy Bible" you can hear Richey's guitar in the mix and for someone who was most likely drunk off of his ass at the time he handled stuff pretty well. At one of the Astoria gigs (their last three shows with Richey) JDB's guitar shit the bed and Richey had to carry the song while the techs got JDB a backup, and there he seemed to do decently as well. I imagine that was a fucking nightmare for Richey, though - there's a story about him getting hold of a meat cleaver and attempting to chop his fingers off so he wouldn't have to play guitar. It seems he struggled with his ability to play but I think he was too hard on himself.

    His tone was shit though.

  48. peepingtom20101

Best version of this I've heard by a mile. Always loved the lyrics here especially the opening verse.

  51. DeAnne Hilton

Not what I expected! I'm impressed. But did they ever get another lead guitarist?

    matthew reed

James is the lead guitarist, it was richey who disappeared (he was the rhythm player loosely speaking)

    DeAnne Hilton

Oh,so sorry for my mistake. I was misinformed by a youtube documentary.I have listened to many of the songs.I love them all though, and I am sorry for the loss of Richey!

  52. Dermacrosis

This is the song and vid that got me into MSP. THey had been around a while before I saw this and so off I went on a musical journey of listening to all their stuff. It was not a wasted one.

  53. jonanjello

I'm confused by the recordings of this album. I had a promotional tape (black n' white cover of a very GnR tattoo design,) and the recording was top notch. The drums were present and booming and the guitar clear n' loud.

Years later, I purchased the CD and was let down as the songs had different recorded versions. The drums didn't have their presence and the lower end of the mix was weak.

What's the deal? It sounds like this video's version is the one from the original cassette tape I once owned.

    peepingtom20101

    @jonanjello
Pretty sure Sean Moore decided to use a drum machine on that first album, not sure if it was for the whole album mind. The drums do sound quite synthetic on GT. Surely someone can clarify this.

    Kperson123

The producer basically ordered Sean to do a drum machine track for the entire album. Sean mentioned that it took many hours to program the tracks.

    peepingtom20101

    @Kperson123
Why did he do that? Was SM not capable of playing what was required?

    Dash Spaceski

    @peepingtom20101
Yea replacing Sean for a drum machine sounds crazy.

    Ray James

He wasn't replaced with a drum machine, the drums were just extremely compressed and over engineered. The whole album's mastering was fucked.

  71. underneonloneliness2

this version is different to the album version! the album version doesn't have the delayed vocals and has a different drum sound. There are also some other minor differences

    Ben Edwards

Yep this is the US mix/version with a session drummer, as opposed to the usual GT release which is just programmed drums throughout (poor Sean lol). Session drummer was Zach Alford and he is on 3 other tracks on the US release (NatWest, Little Baby Nothing and You Love Us). I do prefer this mix, but don't like the fact James' awesome guitar run from the bridge back in to the last chorus is buried :(

    Luke Parry

+Franz Xover the producer wanted most album to be programmed

    underneonloneliness2

+Luke Parry well the producer is in an idiot! It should be up to the band

  72. Jez Creed

Listening to the early stuff, you can really hear their Guns 'n' roses influence. The big riffs, cocky swagger, in your face attitude....... total G'n'R.

    Rylee Strange

I know they've said that Generation Terrorist is supposed their appetite for destruction, but i just don't hear it.  maybe it's cos the voices are just too different for me to hear it/
