Manic Street Preachers - Patrick Bateman Lyrics
He's a real cool guy and he's a hero of mine
Travis, Rhinehart rolled into one cute son
Less than zero a grotesque nightmare
Subtly disturbing like normal behaviour
I'd walk in the park but the trees are diseased
No sweetheart and I am too confused
I only love my watch and my snake skin shoes
I feel so small in the supermarket queue
People seem to laugh at my choice of food
My personality is held together with sellotape
A loose fit just like a numb junkies hate
I pretty my face with all this cream and stuff
I lack the thought to care about politics
Just do what I like ain't that democratic
Genesis, Huey Lewis, Filofax, CD5
A backdrop to discuss over expensive wine
Didn't even know when or why I should stop
I feel so stupid like a joke that belongs
I guess all psychos are made out of money
I cannot be saved as liberals keep telling me
I don't wanna be understood I just wanna kill
Out of blandness I am your everyday thrill
Patrick Bateman
We are babies crippled in Christ
Patrick Bateman
Therefore I must be God
I must, I must be God
I touched your lips but now I just paint
Surface reflection all I desired babe
I am melancholy, flower cutting through stone
I am a crime everybody has at home
Papers hate me but they need my behaviour
The dignity amongst Hollywood trivia
Escape is so cheap of alcohol and whores
Mines the sanity of exclusive gun laws
Art critics say porno's easily obscene
Late Show retards Dice Clay is true poetry
They've never tried living underneath the water
That's real end of the century nausea
Patrick Bateman
We are babies crippled in Christ
Patrick Bateman
Therefore I must be God
I must, I must be God
Patrick Bateman
We are babies crippled in Christ
Patrick Bateman
I fucked God up the ass
I fucked God up the ass

The outro solo from 4.50 onwards is like a mind unraveling ending with a drop of lyrical self obsession (to me anyway)
Incredible b-side
Quite possibly the greatest b-side ever recorded.
Blah blah blah. Opinion. Rent last victim work. Suck yerself litter runt.
Someone should edit this down. and make a hit single lol..
"I feel so stupid like a joke that belongs .." - Quite possibly the deepest lyrics I've ever heard.
You like Manic Street Preachers? Their early work was a little too "Soft Rock" for my taste, but when "The Holy Bible" came out in '94, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism, that REALLY gives the songs a big boost!
He's been compared to Kurt Cobain, but I think Richey has a far more bitter, more intellectual frame of reference.
In 96, Manic Street Preachers released THIS, "Everything Must Go" - their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "A Design for Life" - a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics, BUT THEY SHOULD, because it's not just a song about the importance of regional pride and and the importance of working-class empowerment, but it's also a personal statement about the band itself!
Hey Paul! TRY GETTING YOUR RESERVATIONS AT DORSIA NOW, YOU STUPID FUCKING BASTARD!!!!
Christ knows how they got the kids to sing on this. Spiritual prelude to the Holy Bible with James out Slashing Slash, perfection.
What's that chord progression? Elvis IMpersonator Blackpool?
there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman
Holy Hell!
top lyrics, really cool. I think james hates the music he wrote
Edrys, Marisa, Catrin a She-Ra.
This song is a little too "New Wave" for my tastes.
+33hegemon New Wave!?
Jon Britton, it's an American Psycho reference.
I pretty my face with all this cream and stuff/ugliness inside much harder to cover up.
One of their finest, overall GATS was their peak IMO.

I guess Richey and Nicky were Bret Easton Ellis fans.
I kind of see why this is a b-side. The lyrics are well worded but lack the punch of the usual Manics songs, and the composition is rather average compared to their other stuff. James' voice, however, is incredible. There's so much soul in this man's voice, and the way his voice almost gives out during the "I FEEL SO SMALL IN THE SUPERMARKET QUEUE" bridge gives me goosebumps every time. Great song, not one of their best but certainly an enjoyable one for Manics fans.
This was meant to be a single right after Generation Terrorists and before Gold Against a The Soul, the Manics were really excited about it but everybody at Columbia records told them it was a bad idea, they were apparently horrified by the lyrics and thought it would create a huge backlash against the band.
Un Extincteur s'est vidé I think the lyrics might of required a little tweeking for daytime radio 😄
The song was (obviously) about american psycho - hence the allusions to 80s consumerism in the lyrics. The film of the book had just come out when (mainly Richey I think - could be wrong) penned the lyrics. From memory the band rated it highly & I personally love it. The record company tried to kill it because of "fucking god up the ass" type lyrics - typical Richey - & so it never got the attention it deserved. I've seen the manics 15 times over the last 25 years and they've not played it once - not even on the gold against the soul tour.
the film came out in 2000, so they were probably inspired by the book rather than the film
It’s a great song, but lyrically I can’t see it on an album. It’s too unique to fit in most albums.
lyrics are available upon discovery
you value the power of audio i assume?
:)))))))))))) yes I do some times it isn't whether the tone is right but the person
@james atkinson going to make Jamie find the lyrics for me I am officially giving up:(( don't do that often
:(((( ye gods, i thought it would be easier than that!
It probably is, she just finds them so much faster than I do. :)) I most likey could find them before she gets up.
What about Sepia, Black holes for the young and Hanging on
Shame that this didn't make it on to the 'Gold Against the Soul' album.
where did the feeling go, where did it all go wrong?
fave band + film + book + actor FTW
the book is misogynist kool-aid; oh sry it's "SATYRE" cause reasons
@Capricae what about the book The Handmaid's Tale? Is it misogynistic as well? As far as I remember things do not get any better for Ofred or anyone else in the end of the book...
See backing up what I said about being able to make great bsides
You forgot Prologue To History, Socialist Serenade, and Comfort Comes
You guys should check out Huey Lewis and the News.
Trust me I'm in Murders and Executions
Couldnt quite imagine them doing this one on Strictly Come Dancing somehow...lol Brucie would have ha heart attack...
I FUCKED GOD UP THE ASS. Oh how I wish they had actually released this as a single!!!
And what, may I ask, is wrong with being Welsh? ...oh God, I've opened the floodgates haven't I......
It's an absolute crime that this wasn't released as an A-side and one for which I will happily wire-coathanger the perpetuators for. Is everyone alright with that?
It seems more like the perspective of Ellis at the time he was writing American Psycho than Bateman's perspective.
@TheDicer1000 Oh yes, because that's why they named the song "PATRICK BATEMAN" after the main character of American Psycho and reference the book throughout it. It's all secretly about The Dice Man, despite a lack of any kind of reference what-so-ever.
This was the first Manics song I listened to on purpose. I love them!
This is about Luke Rhinehart's "The Dice Man"... not a lot of people know that x
Ppl if u r looking for this song there's loads of copies of the la tristesse single on e bay, fucking great track,James was on fire in those days,I'm gonna get the guitar out and start learning it now!:-)
@borntoend94 LOL atleast i could make a fucking song you stupid douche bag - and what if i become something great and youre just sitting on your wobbling ass with ravioli dripping down your shit talking mouth? LOSER
never heard this before, but it's GREAT!!! God I love them!!!
I saw the Manic's in Edinburgh at the beginning of the month. They were as good as they were seventeen years ago.
@XplicitGlam No-one would ever listen to your fucking song, so it really doesn't matter.
FML i just finished writing a song i wanted to name Patrick Bateman. Fuck you Welsh band
only 21277 views! wtf"
Yeah, shame this track was BEFORE the Holy Bible!
@username4116 Send away the tigers is a better album than gold against the soul.
This song is pretty heavy compared to their stuff you hear on the radio.
@omarqure That was actually Herbert Ainsworth.
@emokiller907 oh no you didnt i had dinner with him in london yesterday

The lyrics

JDB's voice
This song is.....
I love this B-side. It's somewhere between Gold Against the Soul and Holy Bible. The solo is hystrionic brilliance and some of the lyrics remind me of All Lost in the Supermarket. Good stuff.
I would like to see the guitar solo of ARCHIVES OF PAIN on GH
Rare b-side? It's on every copy of a #22 single!
Where oh where can i find this track, that isn't youtube.
yes im actually shocked there is not even one manics song on guitar hero or rockband. it is apalling.
1. Partick Bateman
2. Montana Autumn 78
3. Democracy Coma
4. Are Mothers Saints
5. Us Against You
One of the greatest bands to make B-Sides. That James Dean Bradfield can play the guitar a bit carnt he. LOL. There should be Guitar Hero MSP not fucking Metallica.
lovely stuff
no one wants to hear your opinion
What's 'childish' about it??
See Travis comment below, and this was a B-side so what's your problem.
Personally i think it's great. I assume you're a EMG onwards fan.
Thsi one really is pretty childish and is pretty chringe worthy but hey< they can't all be gems.
Definetly my all time favorite b-side. I can listen to this on repeat all day!
This is up there with condemned to rock n roll.
10/10
To the comment below about its non-inclusion on GATS / LT - it's down to the lyric "I F**ked God Up The Arse".
Columbia wouldn't sanction it - JDB wanted it on GATS.
i think the lyrics, melody and music go together well, what specificly dont u like about the melody?
I reckon that the lyrics are great, but they had this as a pre-existing song and wanted to use it, and the lyrics, and decided to put them together, but sort of lost it at the melody.
Shame, could have been two great songs there
i remember this song totally gob smacking me when i first heard it...their heaviest song that possibly Metallica would bow down to! The last 90 seconds James and Sean just let rip and its amazingly raw edged feel is what makes it and gives the messed up feel that portrays exactly what Patrick Bateman's character was like in the book/film! The guitar solo is on a level with archives of pain one definitely!
Absolute fuckin class.
i think i can already identify with the lyrics,we all have a dark side, where do u think the author of american psycho got his ideas?
i think the melody's awesome!
clark, Patrick Bateman = Main Character of American Psycho
huge, huge song..the lyric is really deep
"so who am I to argue:("..the person with the coolest name on youtube thats who! Oh and I'd like to amend my list of songs that should've been on LT to include Love Torn Us Under. Great song
cool that you put this up fromdespair2where! I never got the single this song was on and I've always wanted to hear it. IMO they should've just done a 2 CD set of b-side originals for Lipstick Traces. The covers could have been a diff. album entirely. Alot of good shit was left out it like RP Mcmurphy, Starlover, Dead Passive and Too Cold Here
