Manic Street Preachers - Faster Lyrics

I hate purity
Hate goodness
I don't want virtue to exist anywhere
I want everyone corrupt

I am an architect, they call me a butcher
I am a pioneer, they call me primitive
I am purity, they call me perverted
Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave

I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn
Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards
Self-disgust is self-obsession honey and I do as I please
A morality obedient, only to the cleansed repented

I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer
I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell

The first time you see yourself naked you cry
Soft skin now acne, foul breath, so broken
He loves me truly this mute solitude I'm draining
I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing

Sleep can't hide the thoughts splitting through my mind
Shadows aren't clean, false mirrors too many people awake
If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down
I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else

I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer
I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell, learnt to spell

So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything

In this video, sometimes it's just James, Sean and Nicky, while Richie wanders about off camera alone. Sad :-(

As bleak as it gets, but some harsh truths contained in those lyrics. Way ahead of it’s time, thanks Richey, the work of any great artist always lives on ❤️

1:25 that look from Richey at the camera is like he is looking into your soul...can see the depression in his eyes.

  28. N.... M....

Whenever great guitarists are discussed; Bradfield is never mentioned. Why is that. Guy is awesome

    N.... M....

He suffered because he came to prominence during a time where Solos were a bit out of fashion I think. He's underrated as a singer aswell.

  29. o.... ....

I know everyone already knows it, but that ‘I’ve been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else’ lyric is probably my favourite ever.

  66. H.... G....

I think the crappy quality of the video and Youtube's lo-fi sound makes it a little better :-) Of course I enjoy listening to my music in high quality but on this particular track, listening to it via Youtube gives it a bit more edge x

the holy bible... the epitome of intelligence in rock and roll.

    H.... G....

It's intelligence without wisdom. So in other words the sentiments expressed are foolish and stupid. This album is junk but if they didn't make it then we wouldn't have the opportunity to do the philosophy on it. The worldview expressed is this song is Nihilism which is not very comforting. No wonder Richey disappeared. He never resolved anything!

  70. j.... d....

fuckin richey edwards why you have to leave... :(

  79. T.... F....

If only we had a genius like Richey Edwards to give us lyrics to describe these dark days. You're missed, Richey, wherever you are.

    T.... F....

He already did on this very album ( Holy Bible) p.c.p he absolutely fucking hated political correctness and virtue signalling bastards.

    T.... F....

He would've hated the way liberals , the house of lords wealth and privilege are sneering trying to beat down the working class AGAIN. Don't think for one moment he would've supported your fucking stuck up middle class politically correct remoaner shit.

    T.... F....

Tim Fisher yeh his lyrics still apply so..

    T.... F....

@ mojopin 70 He was not a false teef old git like you he was continental unlike you incontinent dumbass.

  80. j.... ....

.Missing person....Richey Edwards, 1st Feb 1995, he was an intelligent guy academically, well read, good with words, BUT he couldn't find a way to live, he couldn't find peace of mind. You see, in life, without having peace of mind, and if you are feeling tormented by guilt, shame or just your own thoughts are driving you crazy ...then........... your life will be very hard, and it will lead to massive depression, and is some cases tragedy. Peace of mind is everything.

    j.... ....

or perhaps nothing is everything, but many things come close...? i think the trap sometimes is that peace of mind (from the perspective of being aware of the great disaster befalling human life) can resemble capitulation towards that disaster, but it is in fact, as i think you are saying, the necessary step in also learning the way that the disaster needs to be opposed, from an 'internal' position which also then opens the way to 'external' action, thank you for that comment.

  81. R.... ....

RIP John Hurt you absolute legend

    R.... ....

    RobbieCBPBarlow
I only read 1984 a few weeks ago for the first time. As soon as I read this line in the book I immediately recognised it from the Holy Bible.

    R.... ....

ratty860997 I had the same thing back in 2015 when I began to binge read again! I knew the opening quote to be Sir John Hurt and then I learnt that it was from 1984. Then I watched the clip on YouTube and heard the quote and then read the book and saw the quote and the Manic Street Preachers fan within me screamed with delight (':

    R.... ....

RobbieCBPBarlow Marilyn Manson also references 1984 in Disposable Teens with the lyrics 'A rebel from the waste down'. Which Winston says to Julia. That was the other line in the book that stood out to me and made me think. 'I've heard that line before'.

    R.... ....

ratty860997 I've never been a fan of Marilyn Manson - I don't dislike him just never got into him really, but I do remember that quote now that you mention it! (: one of the best things about music and literature is that they're both easily dispersable between one and another and easily influential to each other too (:

  82. J.... H....

RIP John Hurt. Only you could deliver the opening lines to this song.

  83. I.... ....

RIP John Hurt. You have finally exited from the corrupt.

now ain't that just one of the most deliciously angry songs EVER
But I guess that's true for every song on "The Holy Bible". What an awesome album!

  90. I.... B....

Best Manic song ever by far.

  91. M.... S....

This song is so cool! A true classic

  92. P.... ....

Just got into these guys really. Well I had Everything must go as a kid and loved it at the time and I seen the greatest hits (the older one) in a charity shop and thought I'll give it a spin and haven't stopped listening since. Still not a massive fan of IYTTTYCWBN that's kinds what put me off in the first place.

  93. S.... B....

    This is beyond great!

  94. A.... G....

Can anyone claiming that these lyrics are the greatest give me a summary of what they think they're about? Reads like an incoherent mash-up of nihilistic teenage angst and cliched literary name dropping as far as I can tell.

    A.... G....

If it means nothing to you, it means nothing to you.
But by the way, could you recommend some (lyrically) good music to me?

    A.... G....

It's about non-conformity, esp Alister Crowley.

    A.... G....

This turned out much longer than I planned it to be: 'I am an architect/They call me a butcher', etc - contrast between narcissistic sense of self and the perception others have of you, linking with the line 'self-disgust is self-obsession'; self-mutilation (represented by the word 'butcher') becomes, in the speaker's view, an almost pious self-sacrifice ('only to the cleansed repented'). Possible link with the song 'She is Suffering' regarding idea of emptying oneself of desire.

'I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn' - the song describes all these types of people. 'Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards' - life is suited to the others, the "normal" (lizards are cold-blooded and sit in the sun to get warm), but it is not suited for the speaker. You could also make something of the fact that 'they' are dehumanized.

'I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer/I spat out Plath and Pinter' - dominance of ego, rejection of aesthetic debris represented by Miller and Mailer, and the speaker's own cultural history in the form of Plath and Pinter, whose work often centered on alienation - homage to cut-up collage literature, and 'almost heroic self-indulgence' (Wire) - ego again. Probably Edwards' reflections on his own status as a lyricist, as well. 'I am all the things that you regret/A truth that washes that learnt how to spell' - speaker centres him/herself as ugliness and regret, but also as truth incarnate; links back again to the ego, as well as addressing the idea of an atavistic seed of weakness and aggression that prevails and is part of the human condition.

'The first time you see yourself naked you cry...' - body dysmorphia leading, in this case, to self-abuse. Interesting contradiction here between this and the self-aggrandizing lines before it. 'He loves me truly this mute solitude I'm draining' - not personally sure about this one. Is 'He' God? 'I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing' - fairly self-explanatory.

'Sleep cannot dull thoughts splitting through my mind' - insomnia. Putting my autobiographical hat on (which I know some disapprove of but eh whatever) Richey was an insomniac, and drank to help himself sleep. 'Shadows aren't clean, false mirrors too many people awake' - people become preoccupied with false sense of self, a completely fake self-image to continue through the day. The lines later on ('I've been too honest with myself/I should have lied like everybody else') reinforce this.

The incoherence of the song is a reflection of the incoherence of our culture, and a rejection of the cosy lyricism that betrays those it aims to save. If you're interested, here's Edwards' own fittingly oblique summary of the song: 'Strength through weakness. All morality sown in the soil of the ruling caste. Self-abuse is anti-social, aggression still natural. Society speeding up – finds worth in failure.'

    A.... G....

To me much of the song always sounded like a sort of critique of fascism/Nazism. EG: they see themselves as architects/pioneers/purity but in reality are butchers/primitive/perverted. Other people interpret it differently.

    A.... G....

A goodwin it's not always about trying to find something in the lyrics. It's about what/where the manic street preachers came from that strikes a chord with most. All of their songs and lyrics are special x
