Manhattan Transfer, The - Route 66 Lyrics

If you ever
Plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66

It winds from Chicago to LA
More than two thousand miles all the way
Baby, get your kicks on Route 66

Now you go through St. Louie
Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty
You'll see Amarillo
Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff Arizona
Don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino

Won't you get hip to this timely tip
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66

Now you go through St. Louie
Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty
Now you'll see Amarillo
Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff Arizona
Don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino

Won't you get hip to this timely tip
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66

Get your kicks on Route six six
Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route six six

ok you got me with that one...you made me chuckle a lot...i assume that is a dig at them although they have always been one of my favs... : )

  26. checkfoldcallraise

such a nice harmonious group! i would've never known about them if not for an episode of "home improvement" where they sang during "tool time" during christmas season. :)

  27. Ariel Deam

    ARIEL DEAM "Ruta 66" ( in Youtube ) ! ! !

  28. MisterRightAway

Hmmmm. I see that finally they're looking exactly as they've always sounded!

  29. rawbeliever

    That was ridiculously good!!

  30. Ariel Cohen

    Who's the keyboard player?......

  31. Dennis O'Brien

The musician is the very talented Yaron Gervshosky. He's the music director for The Manhattan Transfer and has been with them for 30+ years. You've heard his music (and not known it) through many TV programs, advertising, and other charted songs as well. And, by the way, a very nice man in every sense.

  32. D A.-M.

    love the vocals

  33. Paul Orr

Amazing. I've never been on 'Route 66', but I can just imagine it.

  34. Tom Tall

Best version is from Asleep at the Wheel.

Sadly their version isn't on Youtube.

  35. Walter Sanson

Route 66 never got better than this.! Magnificent.

  36. Walter Sanson

Route 66 never got better than this.! Magnificent.

  37. hydropolite

1- never liked this song (but thought the lyrics were clever) - this version changed my mind
2-, this is by far the coolest on stage persona for the older guy (tim?) - helps to forget some of his previous costuming ....

  38. John Last

This is a great group. Listen to "Snowfall" by this group. Check this song out.

  39. BigBandLittleClub

    Great vocals !!!!!

  40. jdlky

    @thefakejuke
Bobby Troup wrote it in 1946 as a Jazz piece. Nat King Cole recorded that same year
as a Jazz piece. Rock and Roll didn't exist yet. Obviously you have never heard the original or you wouldn't have made such a silly statement.

Now if you you like someone else's version better that's OK. Great pieces of music are
    adaptable and this one qualifies.

  41. Jeffrey Nelson

@ytteman Thank you! Do you know if he is/was their regular pianist or is he a studio player?

  42. ytteman

@heatherhillrd The pianist is Yaron Gershovsky.

  43. paulanderson79

@heatherhillrd I have no idea who he is. The fact remains that he's a truly gifted musician. As is every member of Manhattan.

I think Janis Siegel is amazing. She's over 55 years of age in this clip. The voice is brilliantly pitched and musical. Additionally she is, from my perspective as a 41 year old man, arguably beautifully attractive.

  44. Neil Packman

oh no , really you cant do this to a great Rock n Roll track, its so bad its funny

  45. Jeffrey Nelson

Anyone know who the fabulous pianist is?

  46. KLRJUNE

    you'll see Ammmmarillooooooooo

  47. MoveMakerTV

Nobody holds a candle to these people

  48. Tatiana Cohen

    they are always GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<3

  49. brickpaverr

To :Im44943:, You are partially correct in saying that this is the best version (In your opinion), but that is because the many other versions of Transfer doing Route 66 have been taken OFF youtube. I estimate that no less than 8 other videos have vanished and while the great version left here is one that has so far remained, I don't believe it is the best version.

  50. brickpaverr

Up until about 18 months ago there used to be a black and white live version of Transfer singing Route 66. They were all wearing long coats and very obviously enyoying it immensely. That very fabulous clip along with several others, suddenly vanished and has never been seen again. I have hunted everywhere, I even emailed Manhattan Transfer in New York to try and find where I could buy it from but to no avail. That clip is obviously out there somewhere but where.??

  51. B von Grabe

@brickpaverr Good question. One that vanished was Girl Talk ! Why ? I would have bought that, too !

  52. Shawn Wray

Awesome, please bring this great music.

  53. det wüstfeld

ich hoffe ich die vier noch mal irgenwo oder wann live sehen!

  54. brickpaverr

Why have so many good youtube video clips of Manhattan Transfer Route 66 vanished from Youtube over the past 12 months. It's not as if we are able to buy dvd's that contain these great clips. I've hunted high and low and can NOT find anything anywhere. IF I could find them or get them at all, I WOULD buy them.

  55. Jody Pate

    they look and sound great!!

  56. lm44943

This is the best version of "Route 66" (in my opinion)

  57. twangbarfly

@pegguyarphexad Do you play a musical instrument? He's BANG on time and plays a great figure that nobody expects - they look back at him smiling and approving. ..... watch it again....

  58. Michelle Carr

You all are AWESOME!!!! I have listened to you for years....

    Michelle carr

  59. Michelle Carr

  60. Shuggie Murphy

    what a bloody awful band

  61. tracegnet

    they are the best

  62. Brent Graham

@pegguyarphexad ... Um, he's not slowing down! If you can count to 4, you can hear he just does some intricate tied rhythms. Not for the faint of heart, of course.

  63. Hendra Hendarin

Can you notice the pianist is accidentally sort of slowing down his beat at 2:25 (filling the background after 'Won't you get hip to this timely tip'). which apparently is disturbing the singers that they can't help to look back a bit

  65. Jim Kingsland

Before the tragic events of this past weekend, most of us knew of Joplin, MO through this song -- first immortalized by Nat King Cole in 1946 and then redone so well by the Manhattan Transfer.

  66. X bat

    Pure talent....pretty sick

  67. JPNstyle10

    Are they active singer?

  85. CARMSFAV

Saw them in concert in '87. They haven't lost a step all these years. I agree with Ellas, "smokin' hot piano playin'." Thanks alot, great post.

  86. Belchmaster41

@stlouistim how can they be compared to The Nylons and The Bobs?

  87. lucky learner

    yonger

  88. Alla Axelrod

They are still the best !

  89. BlenderPower

The pianist was kick-ass. I wish we had gotten one when we sang this!

  90. Kaalec

Absolutely brilliant piano playing. He makes it so magnificently easy, like he's not even trying. It's amazing what talent and an enormous amount of hard work can accomplish. My hat is off.

  91. Belchmaster41

@TimeLife isn't this same song the first track on their cd Bop Do wopp?

  92. lambioi1
