You killed his brother, the only person he truly cares about, then LEFT. He watched you, and you didn't change. You killed the rest of his friends, even causing one to commit suicide. He isn't seeking revenge, not really. But he's also not trying to keep himself alive. In the end, he's acting because he has to. He didn't want to fight you, not really. Not even after you killed his brother. But then it came down to the universe's protection. And he had to. He didn't want to, or he would fight us on any route where we had killed Papyrus. But.. he doesn't. He doesn't w a n t it. And we could make the argument, 'Well he knows we would win, why would he?" Then why does he fight us on a Genocide run? He KNOWS he can't win, but he tries, and manages to get pretty far because of what you did to his friends and family. But still, mostly for the universe's protection. But then you kill him.. just.. because.. you.. can. All he did was protect the one person left in the Underground other than a psychotic flower. His king. Because at this point, he knows you won't change. You would have already if you were going to, so he just fights to keep you away from the only one left. He wasn't able to stop you from killing Papyrus, because he didn't know if you would change or not. But in the end, he knows you won't. So he doesn't judge you. He just keeps you from killing the only one left. No grudge or anything. If you RESET, he'll forgive you after ALL YOU DID. All he wanted.. was to protect. So he did.

I think Chara never was bad, i think like that because if you do genocide 2 times in a row she/he said you to do other rute and she/he dosn't know why the player still bad, and she/he doesn't understand that feeling. If he/she was bad, he/she said to you to do more times genocide, but it dosn't this case.

I really love this song and is listening to it at least one time every week. But I am a little mad at they are saying 'he' to Frisk. Frisk is represented as a they/them in the game. ​@Frisk mtt Well, Toby also said that the name for Chara put in by the player was expected to be the player's own name too. And once again there's no apparent gender by design or game. "They/them" are completely gender-neutral terms. As in, they don't refer to a nonbinary character specifically, it could also just be talking about a cis person whose gender is unknown by the speaker, and Frisk never tells the others their gender in-game, so it would make sense. They don't even know Frisk's name until the end of a pacifist run.
Anyway, I could go rambling about the likelihood of each character having been each gender and the apparent lack of care about gender in the monster race, but at the end of the day it's a videogame character with an unspecified gender. Not necessarily non-binary, just never defined, and toby said himself that it's meant to be up to the player's personal interpretation from the start.
And by all means, interpret it for yourself however you want. You can say they're genderqueer, and honestly that's probably most accurate explanation as far as the actual game lore goes.
If the characters were confirmed canonically nonbinary I'd agree with you that it's disrespectful to call them male or female. But the whole point of toby saying what he did was to confirm that there isn't any one sex or gender orientation that is officially the Correct Way To Interpret™, and forcing your interpretations onto other fans despite this is just as rude.

I see a lot of people in these comments complaining about how the song portrays Chara as evil. People are arguing that Chara isn’t evil, since it’s us, the players, are the ones controlling them. My argument against this is that they are shown to have done evil things before the game begins, and the influence of the player starts. The tapes in the true lab reveal that they poisoned Asgore, making him really sick. Asriel says it was an accident, but it is strongly hinted at that Chara did this on purpose, and at the very least, they felt little remorse, laughing about the situation instead of feeling bad. The other thing was the whole situation where Chara tried to seize control of Asriel’s body and kill a bunch of humans. I could and should cite this as a piece of evidence since the game sets a clear precedent that killing is bad, but most Chara apologists will just say that they were doing what they thought they had to in order to save the monsters, even though in doing so they would be putting Asriel who they supposedly “loved” in harm’s way. At the end of the game, Asriel even says that Chara wasn’t the great person he thought they were. It’s fine with me for people to like Chara, I just don’t see why we have to lie about who they were. You can like evil characters. That doesn’t make them less evil.

Even after 2 years of being out of and not associating with Undertale and the fandom I can still say this song still bops and Chara nor Frisk were evil. It's always been you, the player. You, as the player, ultimately decide whether they're evil or good.
