Man Man - Poor Jackie Lyrics

Jackie hits the streets
She swears that all she sees
Is the hunger in their eyes
And the desperation in their speech

Jackie hunts the shadows
With a bowie knife at her elbows
She cuts free those horrible drums
That beat like bats under their sternums
She wears their fear around her neck

(I heard it all from shady streets)
(She travels light on angel feet)
(Best watch your back if I were you)
(Her body's warm and that's her cue)

Jackie's still on the loose
As detectives gather clues
So she tattoos a mustache above her lip
Shaves her head, curses God for those hips
That sway when the beat plays
Dead giveaway she ain't no man

And I don't see what everybody
Sees in your sexy body
All I see is a shallow grave
Trapped inside of a pretty face

"Rescue me" is written on your bed
Home is where the bullet lands
As it travels through your head, and I believe
That all I need to set me free
Is for someone someday somewhere to murder me

And I don't see what everybody
Sees in your sexy body
All I see is a shallow grave
Trapped inside of a pretty face

And I walk the same cold streets
Overhear the same heartbeats
And I tune my drum just right
So you can come set it off in the night

And I want to be embraced by you
And see our violent paths collide
I want to crawl in your autumn mouth
And feel the crows pick me apart inside

And everything that they said is true
I'm on a downward spiral towards you
And I'll fight through the positive steps
As I hurl towards my final descent

And I need to get back to you
And lay this heavy head in your lap
'Cause these days nothing makes more sense
Than the dance towards the inevitable end

And I'm wearing virginal white for you
Don't you see?
So please come with your sharpened knives
And murder me

And I'm wearing virginal white for you
Don't you see?
So please come with your sharpened knives
And murder me

'Cause I'm wearing virginal white for you
Don't you see?
And my eyes are more open now
Than they'll ever be

(Why it got to be)
(I heard it all before)
('Cause it don't always end)
(The way it ended before)

(Why it got to be)
(I've heard it all before)
('Cause it don't always end)
(The way it end before)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

There ain't no God here
(Why's it got to be)
As far as I can see
(I've heard it all before)
Your God of hope and light never did nothing straight by me
('Cause it don't always end)

(Cause it don't always end)
(Cause it don't always end)
(Cause it don't always end)
(Cause it don't always end)
(Cause it don't always end)

Man Man Poor Jackie Comments
  1. D F

Sometimes I just fast forward to 3:40 and start listening there; it’s like a whole new song.

    Caroline Hurley

    Right? And again at 6:13!

  2. Vice Versa

    all I see
    is a shallow grave
    trapped inside a pretty face....

  3. Josh Porter

This is seriously one of the most cliche things I have ever heard. From the faux-gruff voice to the gritty prostitute sob story to the instrument choices it comes off as Tom Waits featuring Gogol Bordello. Derivative and trite.

    Death by Proxy

Josh Porter I’ll have to disagree with you there. The voice isn’t fake at all, he just sings like that. I suggest you listen to some of their other songs to see what I mean. In my opinion Pink Wanton is their best: https://youtu.be/xe5W9PD0I9c

    Franz Kafka

    Josh Porter,
Pfft!!! You just don’t even know, bro. You think Waits has ever flowed like the verse after the drop at 4:01
Check out Doo Right. These cats put on one of the illest live shows I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a plethora of em. So set your ego aside and just vibe to the motive and stop tryna act like you know it, cus you don’t. Prolly never will. Oh well, more for the rest of us to chill on.

    Pinche Cabra

... I'm waiting for you to do better porter...

  4. Tyler Smart

Been a fan since 2006. Never gets old

    Heater Pie

Nope. Them Skeleton Key,Bungle and Waits never do for me

  5. Justin Giovanniello

26 people had their drums cut

  6. Arthur Dent

There ain't no god here, as far as I can see. Your god of hope and light never did nothin straight by me.

Man I love this song so much.

  7. MrKneller

Maybe my favorite song. Just beautifully written and performed

  8. Poypull

I'm laying down on my living room. on the floor. one of my cats is on my pelvis. he is sleeping...my breathe stalls out. I'm drawn to the hope for to what you are terrified. yes it is intentional. sleeping cats can't wake from your sneeze.

  9. Joe S

It feels so good in my ears!

  10. Aaron Sadoski

Man Man, where have you been all my life lol

    Carissa Ciciarelli

Aaron Sadoski i came here to say the same. Happy accidents

  11. chiisaichi

    Great song

  12. Silly Griboedov

This song will always hold deep emotional value to me. Appreciate the upload.

  13. Sergo Lich

Gotta love me some good music.

  14. Metropolis2112

    Rescue me
    It's written on your bed
Home is where the bullet lands
As it travels through your head
    And I believe
That all I need to set me free
Is for someone someday somewhere to murder me.

  15. Kit Bell

I feel like this song is a love proposal to someone who he knows is toxic. He's slept with her and is in love with her, but she as heartless as jack the ripper. She's seen a lot of shit throughout her life, and she's very cold because of it. A lot of people want her for her body, but he sees exactly what type of trouble she is, and he's doing everything he can to be with her. He's going on a destructive path, trying to relate to her in anyway. His friends/family/doctor/what have you, are telling him that this is a bad idea, and he heard it a lot of times, but he believes that things are going to be different than the usual "don't go chasing after trouble or you'll get hurt.". I believe the last part, there aint no god here, etc, is sung in the perspective of her, instead of him, telling him how there's no hope or light and being blunt about it. And he admits to himself that he'll never give up.  "cause it don't always end."

    Spiders Johnson

Keith Bell that's good and all but the literal interpretation is so much more fun

    Heater Pie

yepper. That is kinda what I always thought...

  16. MrMaGurth

So from what I gather, this song is basically about a woman who cuts her tits off, murders people, tattoos a mustache on her face and shaves her head hoping the detectives won't find her. There's clearly more to it than that, it will come to me. Love this song!

    Anne Sofie Grumsen

To me it sounds like it is supposed to be a female version of Jack the Ripper that leaves an illusion that she's a man to escape lust of men and suspicion .

  17. Paul Shaw

There's a ress0n Man Man were included on a Tom Waits spoof freebie CD in 2012

    LucidDream

I love both of them. If anything that album was to show people that there are other artists that were perhaps influenced by him. Not a bad thing at all.

  18. Chirch

    OH SHIT!
Before I was just sort of enjoying this song and didn't exactly know what it was about, but then....I read a part of the lyrics.

    Jackie hunts the shadows
with a bowie knife at her elbows
she cuts free those horrible drums
    that beat like bats
    under their sternums

It's full of a lot of similes but the meaning got across.

  19. zakosist

I feel like after hearing this song several times, it has just gotten better and better. Now I really love this song!

    flaming motion

  21. Poeticriffraff er

This is phenomenal, I'll be damned if I thought I would randomly find something this epic and obscure.

  22. zakosist

First time I hear the song, and I liked this song almost immediately and was not disappointed later either. The song is not boring at all, but yet it feels like I've listened to this song much longer than 8 minutes...

  23. CaLeB3337

    Reminds me of Tom Waits.

  24. bongsgi95

    grooveshark com

  25. a channel by any other name

I remember when I first learned all the lyrics to this song, the groove was already great, but belting out what Honus Honus is saying alongside makes it that much more magical. This is in my top 5 Man Man songs with Van Helsing, Skin Tension, Gold Teeth and Man Who Make you Sick.

  26. Blake Winter

    Mmmm, violins....

  27. James Ream

I always thought of this song as a love proposal from another serial killer to "Jackie" The Ripper

    August Alexander

    James Ream me too!

  28. Zach W

This song is the musical equivalent to what a mental breakdown feels like.
    Wonderful
