Mamas And The Papas, The - I Saw Her Again Last Night Lyrics
I saw her again last night,
And you know that I shouldn't
Just string her along; it's just not right
If I couldn't I wouldn't.
But what can I do; I'm lonely too.
She'll never leave me.
I'm in way over my head;
Now she thinks that I love her (yeah, yeah)
Because that's what I said
Though I never think of her.
(No, no, never think of her)
But what can I do? I'm lonely too.
And it makes me feel so good to know
She'll never leave me.
Every time I see that girl,
You know I wanna lay down and die.
But I really need that girl
Though I'm living a lie;
(Though I'm living a lie...)
It makes me wanna cry
I saw her again last night,
And you know that I shouldn't
Just string her along; it's just not right.
If I couldn't then I wouldn't,
But what can I do, I'm lonely too.
And it makes me feel so good to know
She'll never leave me.
(to know...know)
But what can I do? I'm lonely too.
Yeah, and it makes me feel so good to know
She'll never leave me.
Every time I see that girl,
You know I wanna lay down and die.
But I really need that girl
Though I'm living a lie
(Though I'm living a lie...)
It makes me wanna cry.
I saw her...
I saw her again last night.
And you know that I shouldn't (no, no)
Just string her along; it's just not right.
If I couldn't, I wouldn't;
I'm in way over my head (you say...)
Now she thinks that I love her (yeah, yeah)
Because that's what I said...

What an amazing song... always loved 1:14... also loving the picks of Cass and Michelle with Hendrix, never seen those!
love this song~~
Nice. Thanks.
Love and Peace
Namaste
The mistake in the song just makes it that much better...
Like you could replace Michelle with Jill Gibson....
Great sound. Wish I could see which papa is singing this. I love watching Denny sing.
I never realized how unhippy/60s this song is. Listen to what he's saying and think about the situation. It's about greed, obsession, and a little selfishness. Still love it, but it sheds an interesting light on an old song.
outstanding photo collection!
Great songs,great pictures.
I really like this song! It reminds me of an old girlfriend I once had back in 1967. Thanks for the memories! Rest in peace, Mama Cass.
jill and Michelle, the only photo I have seen, 2:31
I love the progression of the supporting vocals in this track, always have.
I have been looking for this photo. No Michelle, Jan , before she was put out. 2:58
ok.. I'm still in love with Michelle Phillips...
The first time I heard this song was on Dtv on the Disney Channel in the early 90s.
If you didn't grow up listening to the music of the 60's and 70's, when rock and roll and pop were brand new, I really feel sorry for you..you missed awesomeness at its finest!
I love the pictures!
Sounds Great. Thanks.
Legends in my mind never 2 b seen again, thank goodness for the memories,,,
what a beautiful time period, fab
Cass...one of the most distinctive and beautiful voices...ever.
I can never say enough about TMs&TPs music... but THIS PIC COMPILATION!! (Speechless)
The epitome of the beauty of youth!
God I still love that song! It was their best!
That mistake actually helped the song greatly. Michelle, who keeps the legacy of this great group alive, didn't always get enough recognition. Now she does.
The "I saw her " was a mistake but back then the studio techs were not in the habit of scrubbing the tracks which had errors on them so including that early start was not clever as opposed to having no other choice but to include it.
Nice job on the montage. Michele looked different after she came back. The beginning of the end for the Mamas and Papas?
I wish I was back in the 1960s again.
I miss music like this.
I was eight I barely remember but remember that style of the sixtys
Michelle, Cass, Denny, Papa John.....& Jimi.. I AM ABSOLUTELY EFFIN STOKED! That pic. and this tune is my Christmas present this year!
Great song. RIP Cass, John, and Denny.
Mmm just looooove the harmonies in this 1. Thanks for posting, and I've gotta say it too, yes, you chose great photos :-)
Where did you get those great photo's of Hendrix with them? Nice job....
your right Xadanar. i was lucky to be about 11 when this came out
Very well done...Love the way you put the pictures together with the song..
Good job putting this video together Mick. This is my favorite The Mamas & The Papas song and you put together a great set of photos to go with it.
John just had a wonderul sense of melody, did he not?
EXCELLENT group of photos
WONDERFUL MUSIC AND VIDEO
Thank you Mr. Wilbury.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!La chanson est fantastique !
1:16 Graham Nash!
Great tune and footage that I had not seen before. Thanks.
Great song. I'm glad they left Denny's mistake in - some how it makes it even more special. Thanks for the fabulous music, John, Denny, Michelle, and the incredible Cass Elliot. Rest in peace, John, Denny, and Cass.
40 years later....this is still better than the garbage they play today
Love it near the end when Denny comes in too early.... they said it was a mistake but it sounded so good they kept it in.
Michelle my belle.
I saw her again last night

To string her along's just not right

But what can I do, I'm lonely too
And it makes me feel so good to know
You'll never leave me
Every time I see that girl
You know I want to lay down and die
But I really need that girl
Don't know why I'm livin' a lie
It makes me want to cry
I saw her again last night
And you know that I shouldn't
To string her along's just not right
If I couldn't I wouldn't
But what can I do, I'm lonely too

Great song....!!!!
LOVELY MICHELLE, BE SURE THAT I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!!!!!!!!
Denny sang lead and co-wrote the song
Always loved the song, loved the video you compiled for it. Nice job.
Rick Allen, thank you for your comment. I'm glad that you liked
Thank you Steve for your comment. It validated my efforts !! Cheers from Brazil
Great video, most people have no idea what was going on behind the scenes at his time. They were all so confused but John wanted Michelle out because she was playing around. She was fired for 2 months but everybody agreed for the sake of the group, bring her back, This video provides the whole story.
Avioncamper, all Mamas and Papas albums were released in both mono and stereo in the USA. Only their singles were released in mono. Drug abuse was sad then, is sad now and it will always be sad. Thank you for your comment
I've always enjoyed their music not at that time, I was born in 1966. All of them are old enough to be my parents, John as my father was born in 1935. I wonder if Cass ever found true love? Also, I wonder with all the drug use then, how did they record such great work? Finally, why were songs released in mono? I thought stereo was in wide use by then? Thanks for the great video.
Sande, you are absolutely right ! Thank you for your comment
this was the peak of the 60's, i mean thats as high as we got, when love was electric' you could feel the rush ( jimmy was cool too)!
Not everybody knows that this song was about Michelle's affair with Denny, how she was fired, replaced by Jill Gibson, and then hired again. I've tried to show the story through the pictures of this slideshow.
Did you notice that at the end of the video, both covers for the album are displayed? With Jill Gibson and then Michelle?
Thank you for your comment,
I saw the late, great Denny Doherty in an off broadway show in 2006. He explained this song had to do with-completely-him sneaking out behind John Phillip's back- and sleeping with Michelle.
Rodrigo, fizeram mesmo !! Saudações do Rio de Janeiro !
Jason, Thank you for your comment !!!
Pat, thank you so much for your words. The M&Ps are a very important part of the soundtrack of my life.
Thank you again
One of the best ever harmony groups fabulous sound of the 60s summer and living life to the fullest I love the Mamas & Pappas sensational always many thanks for many many years of pleasure and reminding me of all those geat summers in a decade that changed the world. Pat Allen an original british Mod and fan of yours.
Every time I see that girl,
You know I wanna lay down and die.
But I really need that girl
Though I'm living a lie
Best lyrics! :D
No doubt about it !!! Thank you for your comment
CLASSIC
She had affairs with both guys.
And I agree with you on Denny's voice.
Did you notice that at the end of the video, both covers for the album are displayed? With Jill Gibson and then Michelle?
InnocentWar1, as I love Mama Cass for her talent and personality, let me repeat what I have wrote to another comment:
Not everybody knows that this song was about Michelle's affair with Denny, how she was fired, replaced by Jill Gibson, and then hired again. I've tried to show the story through the pictures of this slideshow.
Finally, the ultimate Mama was Cass and her huge talent and the ultimate Papa was John with his wonderful compositions and arrangements. Thank you for your comment,
I agree with you, However, not everybody knows that this song was about Michelle's affair with Denny, how she was fired, replaced by Jill Gibson, and then hired again. I've tried to show this drama through the pictures of this slideshow... Finally, the ultimate Mama was Cass and her huge talent as the ultimate Papa was John with his wonderful compositions and arrangements. Thank you for your comment,
Well it's nice to see that Michelle Phillips was featured more in the photos than Mama Cass was....even though Cass had the voice and the presence..if you watch any of the programs the Mamas and the Papas are in, Cass was always dancing and lively whereas Michelle was just "there"...because Michelle was slim, she got all the attention which to me she didn't deserve with her horsey teeth and sometimes snarky looks.
It's a great song indeed !! rob99rst, thank you for your comment
And the punishment became a classic...
I've tried to show the "drama" through the pictures of this slideshow... Thank you for your comment
John Phillips wrote this song about Michelle's affair with Denny, then he made them record it as punishment.
damn i love this song
mama could sing no doubt
fantastic voice
