Magnetic Fields, The - I Don't Believe In The Sun Lyrics
They say there's a sun in the sky
But me, I can't imagine why
There might have been one
Before you were gone
But now all I see is the night
So I don't believe in the sun
How could it shine down on everyone
And never shine on me
How could there be
Such cruelty
The only sun I ever knew
Was the beautiful one that was you
Since you went away
It's night time all day
So I don't believe in the sun
How could it shine down on everyone
And never shine on me
How could there be
Such cruelty
The only stars there really are
Were shining in your eyes
There is no sun except the one
That never shone on other guys
The moon to whom the poets croon
Has given up and died
Astronomy will have to be revised
I don't believe in the sun
How could it shine down on everyone
And never shine on me
How could there be
Such cruelty

Magnetic Fields, The I Don't Believe In The Sun Comments
This is going to be the first song played at my funeral.
that voice!!
My life right now.
Well this was a great find. Love me some organ and crooning! The chorus is perfect
Scott Walker meets Cole Porter
This song is for you Jamie..Can you hear it on the rainbow bridge? Wait for me....I'll be there someday.
Her name meant a Star. The song perfectly describes it for me... *va fael elaine*
When l'm feel sad, come back always "The Magnetic Fields" 💕.
I'm trying to hop around here and pick my favorite Magnetic Fields songs to add to a compilation, just a few. It's so hard to pick!
With the right pop artist singing it, this song could have been a #1 hit in a second.
Does anyone know of any other sad music about feeling empty and lost after getting your heart broken
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Low (early), Red House Painters, Destroyer, Tindersticks, DeVotchka and The Smiths!
nice sound

fantastic song
The best song Neil Hannon/Divine Comedy never wrote.
1:55 - 2:15 is genius
I love the "astronomy will have to be revised" line because in a sense he's mocking all of the general love songs that compares love (or broken love) to things. He creates this obligatory metaphor and then makes it literal by bringing astronomy into the analogy, which is genius in my opinion.
Exactly. In fact it's not even even a comparison, hence the "The only stars there really are" etc.
It's an exclusion ; is love (or its loss) is so powerful it shuts out the "real" stars and sun !
This is the nerdiest response I've heard to song lyrics in a loonnnggg time.
If you have to get metaphysical about the lyrics, then you pretty much killed the meaning of the song.... Not unlike explaining a joke, or dissecting a frog.
I love this analogy...Absolutely genius!
Oh boy! Dont tell me you went to college for poetics! You poor soul!
lovely melody
smile sweetie
This song makes me happy
+feffrey5 why would that matter even to begin with?
Astronomy will have to be revised
Wtf! R those suppose to be testicles on the cover
This is song is so beautiful, i almost cried...
I just saw Matt Breeden in a Magnetic Fields comment thread talking about Mark Mothersbaugh. Wild!
This track's a gem. Merritt makes me laugh
this song is my sexnight song
@***** sexnight with my mouse
+El Manana Sounds messy.
Just ran out of Tissues. Not a dry eye in the House.
sounds like the rugrats song
HAHAHHAA, now that you pointed that out, I can't unhear it
the guy from devo wrote the rugrats song..i think
hilarious/awesome. still so good
+Andrea Glaser because it is so true! Its hilarious if you know the truth. There is no "sun" its just our viewpoint of the earths magnetic field.
What we see as a physical sun is just the light from an unseen light source reacting with the magnetic fields of the earth. When photons react with the magnetic field the atoms in the atmosphere excite and the heat and light is created there. What the light source actually may be remains to be discovered. It could even be on the earth or in heaven. I believe it might be on mount Meru/Olympus like myths of old say the demigods reside.
Spirits. Each galaxy only has two suns. Which are not visible from our view of the galaxy.
Yes I am trying to bring heaven to earth. If we could get our masculine energy and feminine energy more balanced we would have two suns. The second coming of Christ. Our moon is not working like I think it should. The moon represents the base chakra, (red) which is our ability to stay grounded. And also dealing with fear.
lmao. i don't think this is what he was going for m8. read a textbook
This song is raw, it has a strong melody and is praiseworthy.
I always assumed that Stephin was the basis for the character Tommy.
I agree, and I have no idea what Sun Chips are.
If the Beatles had written this song, it would be a massive hit.
This is the most amazing explanation for why a video has dislike I have ever seen...
such an amazing song..<3
I imagine Stephen Merrit is a pretty big Mark Mothersbaugh fan.
A astronomia terá de ser revista.
I think that all the lyrics on "69 love songs" are a question of the concept which has been often and clearly presented by meritt. However, this is propably the most beautiful song that the magnetic fields ever written and yep, it reminds of lou reed's "perfect day". masterpiece!
This...is the Rugrats theme.
electric organ.
whats that in the back ground? I know its a popular instrument but I cant remember the name 2:56
That's called a "drum"
I'm a wee bit late on this I know, but I'm pretty sure it's a Hammond Organ
yes, great songwriter. Ultimately a full experience. very satisfying. Transcendent music that goes to the heart.
Good song, but perhaps a bit too heavy for my taste (well, unless I'm feeling blue). I wonder what an accompanying higher voice might add to (or take away from) it. Maybe it's best this way.
reminds me of bowie in sweet thing
It's weird... This is exactly my range of singing... And I actually sound good when singing:).
I wouldn't count on a video, however, you gotta trust me:)
@bethsnotwearingpants Exactly what i was thinking! so glad i somehow....came across them.
Certain elements like the ennui mixed with wry humor remind me of Leonard Cohen.
I really just found out he is gay lol and that does not effect the way I like his music
I first heard this song in 1999 after a breakup from my GF and have been a fan ever since. Now listening to it with my daughters and they are enjoying it as well. Chicken with it's head cutoff makes them laugh.
this song makes me cry such beautiful composition makes me appreciate life <3
@dust2sday No...
@bartleynaismith huh?
@grandpatarzan
it is quite redundant to cut off ears that are already deaf.
fuck your ad
@jeremiahsmom I don't dwell on the people who don't get it-- seems like astronomy is easier to revise than is a closed mind.
termofuse...how can you not love this song? "since you went away its night time all day" please tell me what is shitty about that?!
Some of their songs I like, some I don't. I love this one. Very pretty!
@termsofusepolice ha
@9t6trix you mean they both share one common thing, their manic depression ?
The sound fits the photograph perfectly.
this band makes me wish I were Vincent Van Gogh - I want to cut my ear off!
interesting song, this is.
'Astronomy will have to be revised' .. what a line! :)
@davivid A seriously good remark my friend, made me day!
Two people desperately searching online for a bag of Sun Chips accidentally stumbled on this song & in their hunger-driven frustration disliked it.
@tomdissonance how so
@animegalc4 i don't think you've quite understood the meaning of "opinionated".
@tomdissonance perhaps they're opinionated. don't be so immature.
great post thank you
cerebral caviar
@tomdissonance Yes. They have to be very stupid. How can you not love the MF's? There has to be something wrong with their "feelings" place.
@izzys66
Rugrats came out nearly 10 years before this album was even released, broses.
yep! hence my question :3
@tomdissonance has itcrossed your mind that they probably didn't like this song?
two people dislike this. are they stupid?
ah, music to cry to ;'(
i didnt see a resemblance to rugrats at all this song is too beautiful ;)
Hey, Mark Mothersbaugh wrote the Rugrats theme!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.tooooooo much.

@9t6trix
That's the best thing anyone's ever said :)
I love the Velvet Underground.
It reminds me of Who Loves the Sun.
Love this song:))
