Magnetic Fields, The - All The Umbrellas In London Lyrics
If I live through the night
I could be all right
It'll make a good song or something
I've been trying to give
But I really can't think of one thing
I drive around
I walk around in circles
'Cause I've got no sense of direction
I guess I've got no sense at all
All the umbrellas in London couldn't stop this rain
And all the dope in New York couldn't kill this pain
And all the money in Tokyo couldn't make me stay
I don't cry anymore
I walk out the door
And I usually keep on walking
I may sit in a bar
Where the cocktails are
But I really don't feel like talking
I ride around
And let the darkness fall
'Cause I got a sense of perfection
And nothing makes much sense at all
All the umbrellas in London couldn't stop this rain
And all the dope in New York couldn't kill this pain
And all the money in Tokyo couldn't make me stay
All the umbrellas in London couldn't stop this rain

Magnetic Fields, The All The Umbrellas In London Comments
One of the best songs i've ever heard, was sitting here thinking about this song after haven't hearing it for probably 4 year. Came to enjoy. But now I realize there are currently 69 comments on this song. How fitting. Im sorry but Ive gone this far.
BON SANG
Just got 1,000 Likes (you're welcome :) )!
Love it everytime, SM.
Circles, cus ive got no senese of direction. Love It !!!
I could listen to this song on repeat for days and never tire of it. As a musician, I ponder why this is? If I think too much about it, it may ruin the appeal, so I'll just let this wonder of a song work it's way into my being and not worry about it too much.
perfect vocal poise and delivery
terrible song, didn't hear a single lyric
The best songs are the sad ones that sound happy
true dat.
this sounds happy?
Merritt's got quite a few of those. Lol
i played this and nothing else for a month. dont ask about 69 love songs!
a good song for the day after an election like that one
If I had all the money in Tokyo, I'd be gone cerca Inauguration Day 2017.

May 7, Moore Theatre, Seattle. So excited!!!!
underrated as all fuck
"I've got a sense of perfection, and nothing makes much sense at all." The greatest cynics are the most disappointed and disillusioned romantics once we are given hope and then eventually are betrayed too many times to count. This song captures it perfectly. Except it's usually the betrayer who walks out the door. Law of diminishing returns or just weariness at starting all over again, perhaps.
too good
So good....
If Eeyore ever sang a song, it would sound like this.
+telekonn Those thistles are tasting good... nice vision
my song. sadly.
"nothing makes much sense at all"
not sure why but this lyric affects me so, so much
Amazing….dreamy and such. My favorite song. Thank you!!
Some of Merritt's works are so sensual, but I'm done trying to fit them in a playlist for sex, never works.....
@Zeke Mystique prove it.......
+Josie Ouiri Welp, I can't actually prove that, but next time I fuck I'll put this song on and let you know how it goes. Deal?
@Zeke Mystique that will work for now.
+Josie Ouiri It wouldn't work for me, because if I was ever with a woman, and she put that on before sex, I would like finish right there.
Zeke Mystique brilliant
Holidays.
"Sad bastard music."
sad thot comments
never smile or look in the camera.
applies to rappers and indie/hipster bands equally.
great effing song!
it's the same for me with Elliott Smith as well...I know he's not for everyone though....
Not a yank, mate. West end, here. I wouldn't have made the comment if I didn't think it true. UK Music has been pretty bad of late -- one look at Jools Holland's show should tell you that.
erm, settle down yankee. hehe
I am very jealous > _ <
it was real good
How was it?
All the dope in New York couldn't kill this pain.
From the US. England can no longer produce groups this good.
I love how it sounds like it's raining.
i hate this fucking commercial...
Sorry that the atomic bomb saved you guys. Could have left you to your fascist dictators you welcomed with open arms. What's it like Being from a place that has been other countries bitch since its formation Czech Guy?
the american smiths? i love both bands, m.f. have a more contempory sound..hard to pick a favourite although the smiths never did a '69 love songs' m.f. by a nose!
yeah seeeeing them in concert tonight!!!
Sad songs usually make me more depressed, but the magnetic fields just make me think: "at least someone else has lived through this misery."
@peperoloco new york city
bought the album years ago
This song makes me want to kill myself...
Czech guy you are awesome. I live in america. It sucks ass! Everyone hates each other! Fuck this place. Lol
you are intellectually (or psychologically) incapable of addressing my substantive points. Also, you are grievously ignorant of American culture and (it appears European history). If you had grasped my last point, then you would realize that it makes no sense to attempt to place me in the position of having to defend wholesale American foreign policy and all iterations of its culture. That is not a burden anyone should have to bear. The locus of moral responsibility is the individual.
@CzechDetectingChap
I recommed traveling outside of your native country, You sill discover that imputing properties (e.g., greed, sloth, war-mongering) wholesale to a population is an inductive fallacy.Usually, it is a fallacy peddled by (1) those who, having accomplished little as individuals and so feel compelled to appeal to putative 'national or ancestral' prestige in order to buoy their self-esteem
(this would include denigrating other cultures or nationalities by appeal to crude stereotypes); or (2) political interests concerned to divert attention away from problems on the domestic front. I do not endorse the foreign policy program of George W. Bush. I never voted for him, nor did anyone I know (living in the Northeast U.S.).
@CzechDetectingChap
I suggest you study 20th century European history. You will find near-contemporary and contemporary (i.e., 21st century) analogues to all of the above.
Best,
Bon
@peperoloco
That they're from the U.S. doesn't jibe with their stereotypic perception of Americans as literal-minded, unimaginative dullards.
So all you Europeans that would bend us to your self-serving stereotypic image (the one that makes the dull, ugly, bigoted, American your counterfoil), either stop voraciously consuming our cultural products (make something yourselves instead of resting on your laurels) or stop treating us to your hypocritical contempt.
Great stuff... Get Lost is an incredible album...
One of my favorites. Such an amazing band!
the greatest living writer of lyrics.
@isolationeitheror ken,eh.
"ive been trying to give myself reasons to live but i really cant think of one thing"......perfect...
They're from the United States.
obviously one of my favorite songs ever. the lyrics are simplistic but gorgeouuuuus. <3
This is some 4-track excellense in action there! Merritt has never bettered this, the song is so strong!
