I discovered only yesterday that the intro of this song came from a movie with James Cagney !! Better late than never. I was watching the movie "White heat" and I heard Cagney say these words

One icon paying homage to another.

Madonna’s True Blue album revealed a previously unseen depth and maturity. Though her music still maintained incredible pop sensibilities, to me, this is where she started to get truly interesting. It’s the first album of hers I bought on cassette. Though I’d started getting heavily into hard rock and metal, I still appreciated good music from all genres. When I started listening to the album, and paying attention to the lyrics, it was evident, even to a teenager, that she had plenty to say.

Now, all these years later, I love looking back at this album, and Like a Prayer. There are hidden layers to her music, and nods to other artists of the past. Vogue would famously pay tribute to the giants of the classic film era (as well as Mr. Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio). But that practice of paying tribute to the past, and her fascination with the silver screen, began in earnest here. It can’t be mere coincidence that she was married at the time to Sean Penn. White Heat is the most obvious example, a nod to James Cagney’s masterful crime drama from 1949. When you start to watch the videos from True Blue, the appreciation she displays for other artists is on full display. The Open Your Heart video is a tribute to Marlene Dietrich and Judy Garland’s daughter with Vincente Minnelli, Liza Minnelli. Then, there’s the Papa Don’t Preach video, where Madonna pays tribute to actress Jean Seberg, recreating her now iconic look from Jean-Luc Godard’s classic film of the French New Wave, Breathless. Live to Tell, the album’s first single, is a visual tribute to the style of Marilyn Monroe, and the sophistication of classic film stars like Grace Kelly and French bombshell Brigitte Bardot.

It’s great to listen to this song in September 2019 and remember how much I liked it when it was brand new in 1986. Such a shame that Madonna’s collaborative producer, Patrick Leonard, blames himself in part for dance music having become the machine it is today. Sorry Pat, but the True Blue LP far outclasses today’s EDM.

White Heat, was inspired by the 1949 Warner Bros. film of the same name starring James Cagney, to whom Madonna dedicated the song. Interspersed with dialogue taken directly from the film. The song was performed during 1987’s Who’s That Girl Tour.

Let's just say I'm a hard core Madonna fan as people who know me well will testify to. And this is my if not top favourite of all Madonna tracks it comes up very high at least. Its so upbeat and James cagney s voice in the song is for me a big part of the songs appeal, it makes the song somehow come to life even more if that's even possible for such a timeless classic. Another amazing song from the truly one in a million Madonna x

Lincoln Parc they didn't need to. They took dialogue from the film and that's what you hear in the opening of the song.

I think this is only song Madonna ever recorded with one of the Jacksons, as Michael's brother Jackie did the back up vocals (and he is very prominent in some parts of the song).

+Kirk Merritt no it wasn't. I know it was on the radio in heavy airplay but that's just because she was so popular they would play all her songs even the ones that were never released. Into the Groove Spotlight and Gambler were not singles either and all those songs were played on the radio.

Where's the Party did get released but it was towards the end of the True Blue hoopla. I loved that entire album.

i don't think American Life is that bad, i think its a bit underrated, it's just a very different kind of sound to most songs, some of the tracks on there are quite good, it's definitely not up there with her best but i don't think its awful either.
