Madonna - Waltz For Eva And Che Lyrics

[Che:]
Tell me before I waltz out of your life
Before turning my back on the past
Forgive my impertinent behavior
But how long do you think this pantomime can last?
Tell me before I ride off in the sunset
There's one thing I never got clear
How can you claim you're our savior
When those who oppose you are stepped on,
Or cut up, or simply disappear?

[Eva:]
Tell me before you get onto your bus
Before joining the forgotten brigade
How can one person like me, say,
Alter the time-honored way the game is played?
Tell me before you get onto your high horse
Just what you expect me to do
I don't care what the bourgeoisie say
I'm not in business for them
But to give all my descamisados
A magical moment or two

[Che and Eva:]
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government
Quite incidental

[Eva:]
So what are my chances of honest advances?
I'd say low
Better to win by admitting my sin
Than to lose with a halo

[Che:]
Tell me before I seek worthier pastures
And thereby restore self-esteem
How can you be so short-sighted
To look never further than this week or next week
To have no impossible dream?

[Eva:]
Allow me to help you slink off to the sidelines
And mark your adieu with three cheers
But first tell me who'd be delighted
If I said I'd take on the world's greatest problems
From war to pollution, no hope of solution
Even if I lived for one hundred years

[Che and Eva:]
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government
Quite incidental

[Eva:]
So go, if you're able, to somewhere unstable
And stay there
Whip up your hate in some tottering state
But not here, dear
Is that clear, dear?

Oh what I'd give for a hundred years
But the physical interferes
Every day more, O my Creator
What is the good of the strongest heart
In a body that's falling apart?
A serious flaw, I hope You know that

  23. R.... R....

This is the only scene in which Madonna shines in the role of Eva Peron. If only the rest of her performance was as good.

What is the good of the strongest heart
In a body that's falling apart
    A serious flaw
    I hope you know that.

  30. N.... N....

    The irony.

  31. m.... c....

    Dancing parther

  32. R.... H....

    Dont cry for

  33. l.... ....

    Communism/idealism and bourgeoisie/pragmatism dance.

  34. B.... W....

No messing with Madonna on this one. She was a dancer before being a pop star. I never thought I would see "Madonna" and "History" in the same phrase.

  35. s.... l....

also she is evita just like liz was cleo and cleo was her evita was madonna and madonna was her . done

  36. s.... l....

    they definitely fucked

  37. C.... H....

There's a scene where Che Guevara returns and bears an uncanny resemblance to Peter Sutcliffe, The Yorkshire Ripper. I actually wonder if Lloyd Webber was warning the public about psychopaths like Sutcliffe and Guevara, even if it was only at the subconscious level.

  38. C.... P....

The scene should have ended with Fidel stepping in from the smokey background and taking che by the hand leading him into the mist.

  39. B.... ....

The creators of Evita always intended Che to be a narrator and commentator. In the film, a lot of his side comments were actually delegated to a few other unnamed characters, to show that these comments move the narrative along.

“Rice created a character, Che, to serve as a narrator and Greek chorus. Although he had recently discovered Che Guevara was Argentine, he did not necessarily intend that the character be based upon him, despite inserting specific biographical details into the lyrics that clearly apply to Guevara. When Harold Prince later became involved with the project, he insisted that the actors portraying Che should use Guevara as a role model.[8] In the 1996 film adaptation, the character returned to his more anonymous roots. This was also the case for the 2006 London revival.[9]” - Wikipedia

    B.... ....

Guevara was in his 20s (if I remember well) during Evita's time. So, using him as imagine for Che is not correct. More over, I admit that imagine Che Guevara sings "There is Evil, ever around so fundamental system of government quite incidental" is a strong scene.

  40. B.... ....

This is one of the best scenes. Whether one sees Che as Eva’s conscience, imaginary friend or a childhood compatriot who resembles Che Guevara, they make it work.

It seems Eva is arguing with the more idealistic side of herself until there’s nothing left to discuss.

With Che as a childhood friend, there is just the right amount of chemistry between two people who are attracted to each other but prefer to be friends because of their long history and because there’s no one else to tell the hard-hitting truth. Finally at the end they go separate ways because they understand each other, although they will never agree.

    B.... ....

Ben I love reading comments like this. People keep inventing new explanations for this scene just amazing.

  41. W.... S....

can we see this on ice, pairs skaters?

  42. M.... ....

Madonna really did an excellent job on this movie.. both musically and acting.. and Banderas.. woow

  43. S.... ....

    I'm in a wonderland in thorntail hollow~

  44. C.... O....

Awww Antonio, very cute!! I really like this film!!

  45. M.... a....

Why are these performances not in hd?

  46. J.... W....

I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS...….MADONNA WAS BORN TO PLAY THIS ROLE...….AND SHE WAS AMAZING !!!!!!

  47. k.... ....

    It's pretty hot.

  48. e.... a....

Honestly I just don't know how Madonna didn't received at least a nod. Or at least a silver Oscar. But it is know the academy hates her. Bc she wasn't classy enough or a pop star. Hopefully they won't do the same to Lady Gaga

  49. A.... ....

_I'm in a wonderland in Thorntail Hollow! Gotta get past that snoozin' dino! Make him play those stock sound eeeffects cuz who gives a SHIT no one's playin' this anyways! Chasing the bugs to buy the things cuz I was chasing the bugs to buy the things in Star Fox! Gennneral Scales is the meeeanest! He throws blue towels- I mean foxes! I meant to say that she was a FOX! Where is Falco? He was so awesome andyouknowwhathe'sjustadick and that's why they removed him! But that's not so cool you can't kick King K. Rool cuz he's MEAN and he's GREEN but they did-IN DONKEY KONG COUNTRY RETURNS THEY REPLACED HIM WITH WOOD. Hitting mushrooms... falling kneee deep into the vooooiiiddd..._

  50. S.... c....

Madonna is a legendary actor, however, the fall is rlly unrealistic:3

  51. M.... C....

    It skips:(

  52. b.... s....

    p/s amazing

  53. S.... ....

    God, she sounds good.

  54. M.... F....

No se porque, pero los shippeo (solo en la pelicula, en la vida real nada que ver)

  55. D.... ....

This movie did several things poorly, but this scene (which is my favorite part of any production) as well as Eva's death were both exceptional.

  56. l.... m....

Spoilers: the real Ava/Evita and Che NEVER knew each other! 😲

    l.... m....

lizzy marlow if you write that, then you didn't understand anything from the movie neither the musical

    l.... m....

It's EVA, not "Ava", gosh. Not in all languages is the E/A sound spelled the same. And he's the narrator.

  57. s.... ....

The line "Impossible Dream" has to be a reference to Man of La Mancha.

  58. P.... E....

I just read my previous recent posts, yea, not sure what I was thinking, can you two just keep dancing together forever? I also realize to some, this dance might show alittle off the edge behavior, been there, but you have to see the movie to know how this scene fits in. It's an illusion, reporter following famous person and they secretly, in an illusionary sort of way, fall in love. ❤️️

    P.... E....

Patricia Egan Che is just a narrator who was loosely based on Che Guevara. There is a bit of sexual tension in this scene I guess, but they are basically discussing Eva’s motivations and ambitions. I think the tension is to show the conflicts inherent to Evita’s character. She’s a beautiful lady, but also pragmatic; she’s been praised and vilified; loved and hated.

  59. P.... E....

I'm still wondering why, 2 passionate souls intermingling. Why so far apart but yet so close? I choose freedom too.

    P.... E....

Sometimes it’s best to keep distance because consummating a passion just taints a very wonderful relationship. He is the only person that she is honest with, so though there is some attraction they prefer to be platonic.

I speak of them as individuals in this scenario though arguably Che is an imaginary friend or Eva’s conscience.

  60. P.... E....

    ❤️️

  61. G.... E....

This is a lovely song and both sang it so well i just wished Madonna showed more emotion towards the end. Its a precious and tender moment yet her expression is stiff and monotonous.

  62. S.... L....

This film is a classic and sadly never got the plaudits it deserved (perhaps because it is a musical). Having studied the Eva Peron story, there's no doubt that Madonna gave one of the most incredible performances as this remarkable woman

    S.... L....

You know, I think the problem I have with it is although the songs are great, I didn't really get into the characters. I seem to have that with all Weber/Rice musicals. Since they are wall to wall singing, you don't have the dialogue that could make you have an entry point of caring.

    S.... L....

I’ve always liked Evita. I first listened to the studio recording with Julie Covington and Colm Wilkinson.

I actually got a lot of characterisation from the songs. Lloyd Webber’s characters sing all dialogues, so maybe it’s better to listen in order to get the story and characters right. There’s actually a lot of narration that helps the story along. Some “talky” songs were skipped in the movie too. Probably for someone watching Evita for the first time it can be rather confusing.

  63. M.... M....

Antonio's singing is truly execrable 50% of the time in this movie. Madonna's tone is off during their duet. Alone, she's fine. Put together, they turn this song into a bit of a mess.

  64. A.... F....

    Masterpiece!!!

  65. .... ....

    classic

  66. M.... 1....

He was amazing- she was there... saying lines and occupying space... waste of a lead cast in a fantastic musical.

  67. R.... S....

I like how Che and Eva are unconscious and they both do this beautiful waltz. Amazing.

  68. c.... l....

"There were so many parts of her life and things about her life I could understand and relate to so I felt a kind of kin ship with her. As a teenager she left a very small town she came from in the middle of nowhere and just kind of bravely put herself on a train and took herself to the big city without knowing anyone, without having any formal education or training made a life for herself and actually made quite an incredible life for herself. I came from a small town & moved to New York when I was 17 wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a dancer and quite frankly had no idea how my life was going to turn out the way that it did and I think we both needed to have a certain amount of fearlessness to do what we did so I could understand that part of her and then just all the once she attained the power she attained when she married the president and even now she's been dead for years the controversy that swirls around. There is no in between when people ask what they think of Eva Peron people either think she's a saint and loved her dearly and can't say enough good things about her or there are people out there who thought she was a sinner and she did terrible things. People are very divided that way there is no in between feeling about her and I think that has been true for me for quite a while." - Madonna

  69. A.... ....

It would be nice if the real Evita and Guevara actually did waltz.

    A.... ....

What a stupid comment on so many levels.Shows you know nothing about History or musical theatre.

    A.... ....

Asbury Stan the Eighth he just acknowledged that they didn’t by saying it would be nice if they did. Doesn’t seem like it merits a description of “stupid comment”.

  72. .... ....

    the best👍👍👍

  73. A.... S....

There are doctoral thesis waiting to be written on the depth and intelligence of these lyrics - and no, I'm not being ironic. Love the way Che retreats at the end offering no answers or solutions

Antonio Banderas would be the ideal choice for Gaston in Beauty and the Beast.

    A.... ....

No one can dance like Gaston,
    No one prance like Gaston,
Leads revolutions and dismantles the bourgeoisie like Gaston
    I'm especially good at articulating,
My what a comrade that Gaston!!!

  75. T.... N....

    Great !

  76. a.... w....

che ist doch der tot wenn wir das auch so machen müssen werden wir andere melodien spielen

  77. l.... J....

another wierds thing in 2012 a crakcer cereal bar came out called Belvita. Very eerie.

  78. l.... J....

what sucked about this movie was a bad ending. A good movie should have a good ending. I wonder if the original Broadway show had a different ending. Eva was not a real person, but playing someone else.

    l.... J....

    lookto Jesus ???????????

    l.... J....

What do you mean? It was based on a real life story of Eva Perón, who died at the age of 33. A “good ending” would just make it historically inaccurate.

  79. s.... l....

Antonio loves madonna so much he said shez an amazing person

  80. r.... ....

Madonna played all the emotions of Evita from A to B

  81. m.... ....

  86. M.... M....

2:46 She was pregnant during the making of this movie

  87. M.... M....

So passionate and well-acted. Madonna may be a bad actress in general, but I don't think anyone can take "Evita" away from her. She *was* Evita. Or maybe Evita was her.

    M.... M....

Is true friend, with people like Goldie hawn, or Bette Mildler, or Diane keaton , well Madonna will never get a vote, look at them when announce the award for best song for you must love me , from EVITA , you can touch and feel the animosity and bad blood from them against MADONNA,

    M.... M....

i was in the original london production of Evita and I witnessed four actresses play Eva. Madonna is rubbish because there is no guts and fire that the part requires. Madonna's Evita is like a bunch od pop music videos strung together and it's a good 'production' but she is hopeless as Eva.

    M.... M....

She also provided a very good drama turn in Abel Ferrara's SNAKE EYES (aka DANGEROUS GAME) but, yep, in general she's dismissed as an actress, perhaps because she didn't catch the right occasions

    M.... M....

She's a good actress. She knows the craft, it's just people can't separate Madonna from the actress Madonna.

  88. D.... S....

Political idealism vs. political realism. Waltz for Bernie and Hillary.

    D.... S....

Ugh I can’t imagine that visual

    D.... S....

How about Donald Trump and Anne Coulter

    D.... S....

They actually did it on SNL

    D.... S....

Victor Panoga ohh they did? Gotta catch it... or should I???

    D.... S....

Northern Witch Che (based on Ernesto Guevara) is arguably an idealistic socialist

  89. L.... Y....

WHAT IS THIS?! AND WHY IS IT IN MY STARFOX GAME?! NO! NO I'VE HAD IT! OH GOD I CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE! IF ONE MORE FUCKING WOOLY MAMMOTH ASKS ME TO PICK UP A FHFUELDHDJRBDUDMRHDUEKDH...

  90. A.... 1....

    her voice is incredible

  91. S.... B....

Em Evita, Antonio Banderas, se supera. Exelente vocal e exelente, bailarino.♥♥♥

  92. P.... J....

Notice around :23 that Madonna's hair falls out of her bun, and then in the next cut-away, her hair is back in place again. I noticed this in the movie years ago, as well as other things.

    P.... J....

    Not important!

  93. R.... H....

I love Rice's lyrics. I 💛 this scene- telling her Creator about her cancer being a " serious flaw"!

  94. P.... E....

And to Musical Lover, Antonio was so compelling and I was amazed with his great singing passionate voice. I didn't know about his singing talent until this movie. He was perfect for this movie.

    P.... E....

Sorry I found about this so late, but yes??? I was never against Antonio, I was against the idea that claims his character was Ché Guevara. Actually I did a bit more research on this- IRL Guevara was 9 years younger than Eva, he was a kid when she went to Buenos Aires. And they never met.
When writing the musical, ALW and Rice actually made the character of "Ché" just as a random argentinian guy, just as a narrator, but NOT Ernesto. The first director of the stage musical has however decided that he IS going to be dressed as Guevara, and in the end it was just a mashup of random argentinian historical figures blended together, and stayed like that until this movie where they finally decided to make him the everyman he was primarily supposed to be. In the Broadway revival it was like that as well.
But yeah, I do like Antonio, I developped a crush on him after watching this movie, haha. :)

    P.... E....

He sang a bit in The Mambo Kings.

  95. P.... E....

To Top50Reviews, then my thoughts are right about their dance together. A love/angry passionate imagined encounter. Makes sense then seeing him vanish at the end then.

  96. l.... ....

    where is falco?

  97. T.... ....

Gawd! I wish I was madonna here, Antonio is just perfect.

  98. A.... J....

i love their chem. in this dance, god I love Antonio!
