I think this was actually supposed to be included in the "American Life" album, but after all the controversy of the first single, maybe Madonna and Mirwais decided to let it out of the album to make it "less political" and "more personal" instead. That's my theory...

I think it was a decision of last minute to let it out of the album, maybe because of the big controversy of the first single, so Madonna and Mirwais decided to keep the less offensive material included on the album in the end. If you notice, this song sounds finished, it doesn't sound like a demo at all.

First time I'm listening to this and American Life is probably my fave Madonna album. This is a very good song, she actually has lots of good songs that were cut off from her albums and I wonder why she didn't release them as b-sides at least. Many Pop artists have tons of b-sides.

She might not be a great vocalist (but she proved that she could really sing in Evita, didn't she?) but she knows how to put emotions in her songs, honestly. Although some other singer would do a cover of her works & would probably sound better, it's not going to guarantee that they'd deliver the emotion. Just listen to Susan Boyle's cover of Madonna's You'll See, sounds good, but lack of emotion! There's a fine line between singing by heart & singing with great vocal!

Love how you describe her voice as fragile and honest. I usually talk about the breadth and depth of her recording voice - her ability to convey all sorts of emotions from bittersweet, regretful and hurt to sweetness and light. But fragile and honest is so true here. Thanks

American Life is my favourite album and the unreleased tracks were all my favourite too! Her voice sounded better here compared to her other albums (Like A Prayer and Ray Of Light are different stories though!). I can really listen to 'real' voice. It's just so fragile and honest... The thing with Madonna, she'd always turn the expectations around! Predicts the unpredictable, she's a Queen!

Yeah, this definitely should have been on AL. They could have at least remixed it to make it more dance-oriented and put it on Celebration as a bonus track like she did with "It's So Cool."

madonna writes everything, her best song are about her experiences, you don't know anything.... gaga writes her songs, but are really bad lyrics, no logic on them, are stupid songs for kids, she is a fake..... she can do everything but is not well done, she just repeat the beat and words over and over, live she sings well, but she can not dance.... she is just a wannabe of diva

Her voice was very, really very fantastic in this song. Strong, powerful, unique. If she makes an album in this way again, the world will undestand, one more time, that Madonna will be Madonna - forever! There will always have new singer, but Madonna is Madonna, a muse. And her voice touchs our souls as no one does.

Her voice helped through so much. I lost my mum when American life came out. And we would sit round the fire and sing nothing fails. It gave me a sense of belonging. To my family and Madonna.
