If Paul Simon had written this, it would have been considered one of the best songs ever written. So much of M’s work was overshadowed by sensationalism.
As it is, it’s a beautiful flower child song that sounds as good today as it did 30 years ago.

She was hanging with that crowd and that shaped her sound.

As far as I know this particular song was written by Patrick Leonard.
Madonna co-wrote some of the lyrics.
It was a collaboration, I don't think you can say it is 'her' song.

She really has done it all, yet the critics continue to give her a tough time (as do a huge number of people on social media) her contemporaries are not treated this way for still creating art & performing. One day she will be revered for the work she produced, sadly she probably wont be around to hear it. A true artist, unafraid to challenge and take risks. We are blessed for her presence:)

My dad used to play this song to me every night as a child in the early 2000s. I had it on a CD looped multiple times & every time I saw he was on the computer I’d ask him to play “pink elephants and lemonade”. This album came out at the height of the AIDS epidemic, provided much comfort, assuaged the fears of many and was for lack of a better word, a true antidote for all ignorance concerning said crisis. Championing for us all, Madonna even included an AIDS awareness, educational insert. THANK YOU KINDLY.

Absolutely beautiful piece of music / video... This song came out around the time when the Mad-chester / Baggy / Shoegazing scene (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays etc.) were dominating the UK Charts so despite achieving a #5 peak in the UK this was a rather overlooked song by Madonna's standards

She nearly nailed it with this song. Madonna can sing from the heart but when she trysts dance now it doesn't work. Her Ballards like Take a Bow, Oh Father, Live to tell, Crazy for you, frozen, Deeper and and deeper, Beautiful Stranger, You'll see, Like a Prayer and so on went straight in to your soul cause she has that unique power that you believe every word and feel what she is singing. If she can tap in that creative place again I'd be speechless. Great song and from the heart. Not just factory tunes.
