Macdonald, Amy - Caledonia Lyrics

I don't know if - you can see
The changes that have come over me
In these - last few days I've been afraid
That I might drift away
So I've been telling old stories and singing songs
That make me think about where I came from
And that's the reason why I feel
So far away today

And let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia's been calling me
Now I'm going home

And if I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything
I've ever had
Caledonia's been everything
I've ever had...

Macdonald, Amy Caledonia Comments
  1. K.... S....

This is by Dougie McLean, not Amy McDonald. Nice cover. though.

  2. R.... L....

Can't believe in all the comments there's not one mention of Frankie Miller, The BEST at this song.

  3. A.... G....

A wee greet listening to this x

  4. R.... ....

Wow! A little tear left my eye!
But o my two weeks till I'm back. And one day for good! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💚

  5. r.... ....

Love Amy version but I find Nutini version more passionate ( maybe thanks to his Latin side)

  6. P.... P....

I love Scotland i got married in Moffat and I've been coming on hols all over Scotland for yrs Amy that's nice like you lol Paul p Birmingham England xx 😎🌞❤

  7. H.... H....

I'm on the road to home and this song makes me shed tears

  8. j.... j....

A true Scot. NOT a greetin brit, forelock tugging nawbag.

  9. S.... F....

    Chords here: https://myguitarsongs.com/amy-macdonald/caledonia/

  10. W.... M....

Saw her in West Hollywood at the Troubadour.

  11. R.... C....

The ending makes me cry, I'm not even scottish, I'm arab!

  12. J.... D....

It's such a pity that Amy does not sing the whole song. There is no mistaken her accent, she has a lovely uncompromising way of performing.

  13. G.... C....

    Beautifully Done

  14. D.... P....

Happy St Patrick's Day Scotland, well done with this years 6 Nations!

  15. S.... W....

    Scotland forever!!

  16. C.... ....

    excellent!

  17. P.... P....

    "Magnifique" !!!

  18. I.... K....

we all do this, when alone in the dark.... remember the hills...

  19. M.... A....

though Caledonia is not my literal home, but when listen this song feel like life is wonderful and this life this earth is my home

  20. U.... U....

this is a DESPERATE CRY for FAME!!!!!! ahhh YOU FOOLS!!!!

  21. U.... U....

    PHONEY!!! what is that accent???

  22. c.... ....

Bucket list. Amy MacDonald Concert in Scotland :) I absolutely love the songs of Amy MacDonald!

  23. A.... W....

I like Amy McDonald but she massacred that song,

    A.... W....

+Adam Wilson Aw Adam, she's young, she sings from the heart and I think she's brill. If you want to hear the song castrated, listen to the Delores Keane version.

    A.... W....

+Keith Walker Keith I love Amy McDonald and her music but for me personally I don't like her version of this, but I do agree with you that Delores Keane version is diabolical,

    A.... W....

+Adam Wilson I don't treat Amy's version as anything but a little extra to her album. I certainly wouldn't have bought it. I think Delores Keane should be shot though. Over here in Ireland, it's the only version that gets radio play and I'm sure most of them have no idea what Caledonia is and they probably think it's a love song for some Irish bird!

    A.... W....

+Keith Walker - I'm Irish and I know its not a love song for some Irish bird actually , you just have to listen to the words to know what its about Keith Walker... I really like this song and I think it's sung exceptionally well by Amy Mac Donald - I havent heard anyone else do it quite as well except for Paolo Nutini.

    A.... W....

Depends in what situation the song is played at. The more upbeat versions for a singalong , but for me the Amy version is my fav. Will be the tune that's played at my funeral as the coffin goes into the big oven, as finally I am on my way home .

  24. a.... p....

And yet she was backed the no vote...

    a.... p....

@ali pritchard That doesn't mean she doesn't love her country. It just means she has a different view than you on what's best for it.

    a.... p....

+ali pritchard Actually she backed the yes vote, just so you know the truth. https://vine.co/v/OapYdXMQul9

    a.... p....

    ali pritchard She voted Yes

  25. b.... ....

Nice bit of advertising for Asda at the end

    b.... ....

+bobbj77 Now that you've drawn attention to it. ;)

    b.... ....

+Keith Walker shopping hasn't come down even with that plug

    b.... ....

I don't think it serves much for an advertisement of ASDA.

The person on the train is coming home, to Irvine.  The song is about Scotland and going back home to it.  It's about that longing for home, and those feelings as you get closer, and begin to see familiar sights.  Then, when you finally realize, "I'm home!"

    b.... ....

    They serve a nice breakfast

  26. I.... M....

Working class anthem - makes Flower of Scotland sound rather banal.

  27. R.... E....

amy its a hard song to kill, but please you done it, stand for our nation

  28. P.... M....

My gosh! that was absolutely brutal. At least sing the song not speak it.
Love the song but that just completely butchered it, I'm sorry I heard this 'attempt' now.

  29. a.... g....

    The best version ever!

    a.... g....

    Frankie Miller

  30. t.... ....

she's great and this song has always made the hairs on my arms stand up usually blasted whilst working abroad...thinking o hame....then you come back and reality kicks in lol....whaes like us as my maw wid say....thankfully no one he he

  31. N.... J....

This is a wonderful song and sums up feelings of identity very well.

  32. J.... A....

this should be the new scottish anthem if we get it as its what all the scottish think of WORLD WIDE ..try frankie millers version   brilliant fir all the  SCOTS /////////

    J.... A....

With all due respect, and I think Caledonia is a great song, but my personal opinion would be "Scots Wha Hae".

Written by Robert Burns, the poem goes:

Scots who have with Wallace bled,
Scots whom Bruce has often led,
    Welcome to your gory bed,
    Or to victory.

Now is the day, and now is the hour:
See the front of battle lower,
See approach proud Edward's power -
    Chains and Slavery.

Who will be a traitor knave?
Who will fill a coward's grave?
Who's so base as to be a slave?
    Let him turn an flee.

Who, for Scotland's king and law,
    Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
    Freeman stand or Freeman fall,
    Let him on follow me.

    By oppression's woes and pains,
By your sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
    But they shall be free.

    Lay the proud usurpers low,
    Tyrants fall in every foe,
    Liberty's in every blow,
    Let us do or die.

This is, to me, a much more patriotic song.  It speaks to the heart, strength of resolve of every Scot.  What Scotland means, as well as what independence means to those who desire it.

    Independence, Country, Honor, and Blood.

    J.... A....

    Agree. Beeautiful song.

    J.... A....

@LTBudd I think you're right, I also think each and every primary school throughout our country should teach their pupils this song.

    J.... A....

@John Aitken i honestly dont think it should be the new anthem, i mean i just cant imagine this being sung better than flower of scotland at rugby matches, i just dont see it being able to topple the goose bumps you get when you hear thousands of people singing flower of scotland, it's just not an anthem kind of song in my eyes

    J.... A....

    naw. its pish.

  33. G.... M....

Caledonia has been everything i've ever had.

  34. T.... J....

Sligo Fleadh 2014 ended last night with a concert and fireworks display in Stephen Street car Park (though was pissing rain for most of the night)..

We had a party in @The Garavogue Bar  Sligo - at the end of the night DJ Jinksy played this song song by Celtic Woman. I prefer this version though...

  35. R.... O....

By far the best modern version of the song. A pity it wasn't the longer version!

  36. w.... d....

yip angie it amazing view im in troonbut not posh!lolxx

  37. F.... W....

The window on the other side of that train has really beautiful views on a clear day you can see the Isle of Arran.  I was travelling home this evening from Ayr, and the sky was a rainbow of colours.  It was so beautiful :)  I live in a town close by to Irvine ;) xx

  38. M.... ....

bring tears to my eyes..... amy you are the best!!!!

  39. P.... J....

Scotland is not just a land is a way to live. LOVE ALL ABOUT THE LOVELY CALEDONIA: the people, the music, the landscape, the food, even the Loch Ness Monster is a pretty one lol VIVA ALBA

    P.... J....

    Alba abú!

  40. E.... ....

It was written once and sang many times by various people. People sing songs they didn't write all the time. What correlation does singing about going back home have to do with the singers current (at the time of singing) situation?
Bit of butthurt and bitterness towards specific nationalities I think there, sport.

  41. L.... O....

because some people want to live their lives and travel the world. It doesn't mean they don't have fond memories of their childhoods and where they grew up

  42. S.... S....

Just jealous because no-one wants to return to England, they want to escape the dump asap!

  43. h.... s....

Lass did you never hear Paul McCartney's Mull of kintyer? Please listen to it if you have never heard it. Good health and good luck to you.

  44. t.... ....

I think she sang it with feeling, love this version of it, and don't care what anyone else says about it. Keep it up Amy, we love you.

  45. A.... M....

Its because anywhere scots people go they are always proud of where the came from and there heritage

  46. b.... ....

Mate he rolled up to me in a mobility scooter and asked this. The only thing Scottish about him was he looked like Fat Bastard from the Austin Power films. He was asking if the Clans were still at war.

  47. b.... ....

Scotlands not just a place, its something that lives in your heart. Defines you ability's to love where others can't see love.

  48. T.... D....

We would love to move to Scotland from south Africa but unfortunatley all the Red Tape is making it almost impossible for a 56 year old man to get entry and permission to work. We have been trying but we are running into brick walls all the way.

  49. C.... B....

that resource of oil will not last long

  50. L.... ....

Scottish people aren't allowed to travel and miss their homeland? I'm sorry that wherever you live sucks so much that you don't miss it when you aren't there: that's the thing about Scotland - no matter where you go in this beautiful world, Scotland's more special; east, west, hame's best.

  51. b.... ....

Scottish and Irish people are proud and ambitious and sometimes they need to move because they're being robbed by the UK Government and denied jobs. Decent people always go back to their roots at some point. Check the employment statistics in Scotland and Ireland and possibly even Wales the you'll see why people worry about favoritism.

  52. D.... R....

should ya feel the need to ask this question then i feel nothing but sorrow .....to undertsand this from a SCOTTISH point of view is nothing but WOW! caladonia's been callin me since birth....thankyou for everything AMY x

  53. B.... ....

There's not many job opportunities in Scotland and the weather isn't the best either, So people move away for a better life for themselves, The love for Scotland never leaves you.

  54. L.... ....

you've mined pretty much all of your steel and coal, as well as any other precious metals to the point of exhaustion, and the only oil that remains in the country is on Scottish soil.

If Scotland breaks away you people (English/Welsh) are screwed. So rather than attempt to act all superior, I'd learn some humility. If the day Scottish Independence comes, all the quids will be worthless because all the wealth of the UK right now is off the shore of Scotland in the North Sea.

  55. L.... ....

The only people that have held the Scots back have been the Scots. They just allow the rest of UK to believe they have control over them. Consider for a second what the English actually have anymore that is of any value to anyone outside of England. You have a part of an island. You've over fished your waters, you've pretty much deforested your entire island, your fresh water is undrinkable because of sheep, pig, and cow shit...

  56. L.... ....

3GMatt1, I think you're a wee bit confused. The English never conquered the Scottish. It was the Scots that actually joined Scotland and England under a Scottish king. The English would have been crushed had it not been for the Scottish and their ship building during World War II, and when the British were facing economic collapse in the 1970's and 80's due to privatization and industrial collapse, it was Scottish oil that allowed Britain to survive.

  57. J.... ....

fields of athenry and bonnie banks of loch lomond: two well known irish/scottish songs are examples about returning home, as they were taken away against their will ...by englishmen.

  58. r.... c....

Scots? our own worst enemy. Highland clearances ordered by Scottish absentee landlords. Political independence sold by Scottish "nobility" and landowners for about the same amount blown on the Darien Scheme. A self promoted worldwide perception of drunkeness and violence. A new assembly (parliament) that immediately blows £440,000,000. on a modern cowp thats utterly out of synch with its surroundings and more recently £1000,000,000, thrown away on another disastrous pet project. Wha's like us.

  59. B.... B....

Well, where do I start. Land theft, Highland clearances, mining, shipyards, steelworks, oil theft (among other oppressions, and anti-Scottish acts).....all perpetrated by first, the english monarchy, then the "british" government. Add to these, the many other reasons why people leave any country. It's still a song about the love for Scotland from the perspective of any travelling, or emigrated Scot. At least we have a country people love to come back to, and also think of, when they are away.

  60. S.... ....

Because at different times in history both countries have been financially fucked or people have had to flee for their lives. No one wants to leave their homeland and those who do miss it dearly

  61. L.... ....

Did you happen to notice that Doug MacLean, AmyMacDonald, and Paulo Nutini are all Scottish and all currently live in Scotland.

I personally find the lack of songs talking about returning to Wales or England troubling, if not telling. Heck, the fact that the Beatles sung of going back to the USSR in 1968 rather than be in Jolly Ol' England speaks volumes.

  62. L.... ....

This Is The Life. It's a bonus/hidden track.

  63. D.... M....

beautiful, teary eyes all round. one love #thebrave

  64. T.... H....

    shut up you moron.

  65. T.... H....

    yes she does.end off.

  66. A.... C....

I'm homesick for my ancestral home...

  67. L.... ....

  70. K.... S....

does anyone know where to find te full version, with the bagpipes for a long time at the ned?xx

  71. d.... ....

Caledonia's calling me too..got an email from the Clan.. gathering in '14 that I think I need to go to..don't know why I get a feeling I should go since my ancestors left Scotland 250 years ago but my aunt says I should go to meet cousins I have not seen since they came over for a visit many years ago.I joined my Clan a year ago out of curiosity and glad I did.I got to meet and talk (on the 'puter)with other Clan members andthey seem much like me..One cousin who lives here in the States went..

  72. D.... ....

Sounds Good. Different from Lisa Kelly and the Original, but good.

  73. S.... ....

She sings it really nice, but Paolo sang it which more passion.

  74. S.... ....

    what a cutie!

  75. J.... T....

makes me pround to be scottish!!

  76. m.... ....

i would say open your ears and take a hike

  77. J.... ....

    Fucking love this!

  78. o.... ....

@CompVid101 /disagree. artistic license... ever heard of it? She is singing this song as she pleases. I think your assessment of her singing is off. Could she sing it just like it has been sung, yes. She chose not to... to pause... to shorten notes... to lengthen them. This is her cover.... again COVER. lol. these types of posts make me laugh.. such huge claims and generalizations. get a clue.

  79. s.... ....

I agree. I don't it, but that's my personal taste.
Honestly, you've not quite been told to "go away" til a Glasgow girl's told you to boil your head etc.
She has good technique but distinctive, uses breath effectively and performs wonderfully to thousands. As a retired semi-pro musician I can vouch for how hard that can be.
Anyway, it's folk not opera. You need a different character to carry the song, otherwise your pay check needs making out to D.Maclean as that's who you've become!!

  80. d.... ....

    @1davidcampbell
No , but I would probably need all day to sort out your's ..ha..ha..
p.s.. Dougie's version is great of course!!

  81. 1.... ....

@donaldosan Wow a human spell checker, is this what you do all day cruise the net looking for typos? Either way Duggie's version is better.

  82. d.... ....

@CompVid101 as mentioned below the name is McLean like lane..
    not clean !!??thank you.

  83. d.... ....

    @1davidcampbell
sorry but I have to tell you that actually Dougie's name is MacLean pronounced like lane not clean ..

  84. F.... ....

I didn't expect to think much of this, but she does a good job, imo.

  85. m.... ....

@laura81stev me too! im a falkirk bairne. my grandads irish and i spend alot of time with him so i picked up a bit of a twang on some words. i lived in peterhead for 7 years too but never realy kept that accent. wich im quite glad of. hahah im also a singer but i dont sound very scottish when i sing (except from calidonia of course) check me out :D x

  86. 1.... ....

@CompVid101 So true, plus that song actually meant something to MacClean, something entirely lost on MacDonald who gives it x-factor silicon implants.

  87. H.... K....

Great !!! Henk Keizer guitarist from The Netherlands

  88. T.... H....

she murdered this song FAIL FAIL FAIL.

  89. l.... S....

@sarafergi20 oh so has mine but people still pick up on the scottish!! my dad worked un Dumferline thats not too far from Dundee is it??

  90. S.... F....

@laura81stev LOL!!! I went from a wee town on the west coast yo a city on the north east Coast DUNDEE !!! My accent has watered down alot !!!

  91. S.... M....

LT Budd may not have got the spelling quite right, but she is bang on about the singing technique.

  92. l.... S....

    @LTBudd why thank u ;0)

  93. L.... ....

@laura81stev That sounds like an awesome combination of accents.

  94. l.... S....

@LTBudd i am a scottish lass...dont quite have the Glaswegian accent as im from half way between Endinburgh and Glasgow...Falkirk...plus ive lived in dublin now since im 16 so have a strange mix of an accent :)

  95. J.... C....

The music is beautiful and hopeful. Amy made this song come alive and powerful.

  96. D.... B....

Amy is a great singer, she has that brilliant Scots lilt in her voice which sets her apart from the others.

  97. w.... ....

@CompVid101 hello you twa, youre both made fair comments. call it a draw and get on with things. fraser in adjudicator mode.

  98. L.... ....

@CompVid101 First, his name is MacLean, and her name is MacDonald. They're both Scottish. She's not from Ireland and he's not a Scottish Procter and Gamble product.

Second, she's a Scottish las from Glasgow. The Glaswegian accent is one of the strongest accents in Scotland and if you spoke to any las from the West of Scotland you'd note the long drawn out words. "No" in American may be short and sweet but from the lips of a Scottish las it's a siren's song.

  99. L.... ....

@FollowFollow53 Unless there is another version that she's done, this is the same version that's on her album. Her live version varies slightly with the bagpipes and the gravel of her voice.
