Mac McAnally - Minimum Love Lyrics

Well her face was not the face of an angel
But I saw an angel
And her eyes were not the eyes of a lady
But I was looking for a lady
So I saw a lady
That said

Boy get your head out of the stars above
You get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love
Save your heart and let your body be enough
To get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love

Well I knew that this was not as it should be
But then I thought how it could be
While I waited for my conscience to guide me
This voice I swore I heard inside me
It came from right beside me
It said

Boy get your head out of the stars above
You get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love
Save your heart and let your body be enough
To get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love

Boy get your head out of the stars above
You get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love
Save your heart and let your body be enough
To get the maximum pleasure from a minimum love

Mac McAnally Minimum Love Comments
  1. R.... E....

Little trivia item: Mac wrote songs for other artists, including a couple of songs for the King of Parrotheads -- Jimmy Buffet!

  2. a.... j....

This track is for sale at Amazon. Look for Mac`s album " Nothing But The Truth"

  3. e.... s....

The greatest song describing the advantages of having a one-night stand with a call girl.

  4. K.... P....

Mac had to make a decision. Try to make it as a solo artist or sell his songs to someone with a bus payment. He chose to write for everyone else and I think it's worked out ok for him!

  5. L.... J....

A great song. Good beat and the words are cool.

  6. B.... G....

    Great tune. Relaxing and catchy.

  7. S.... K....

Is Jimmy Buffett singing backup on this?

    S.... K....

    Probably Lenny LeBlanc.

  8. A.... S....

I will never understand why this wasn't a huge hit. It's the perfect pop song. I still listen to this every day. Why can't we get it on iTunes. C'mon Apple.

  9. J.... ....

Thank you for the song. I was looking for it and couldn't find it. Why? Because I was searching "Maximum Pleasure", thinking that was the title.

Love It - even the scratches and pops from the vinyl. Takes you back.

  12. m.... e....

I'm obviously not the only one who thought this was James Taylor. followed this on billboard when it came out. didn't quite reach top 40. Still a great song.

  21. r.... ....

Glad I'm not the only one who originally thought that this was James Taylor. Looked all over for it back in the early 80s and couldn't find it until I finally heard a DJ identify the artist.

  22. S.... ....

I'm honestly shocked that this did not become a major hit back in the day. Talk about finding some hidden gems out there! Sound Hound couldn't even find it, so I will do my part and add it to their database for anyone else who hears this amazing tune on the radio.

  23. N.... Z....

A mix of Paul Davis and James Taylor with an Exile country or Alabama feel. Song is kinda melancholy, but one that just missed the countdown.

    N.... Z....

You hit in on the head! Mix of Paul Davis and James Taylor

  24. J.... W....

This is a song that back in the early 80's WRKK in Birmingham Alabama played often for a while. It was really well crafted. It had that LA production fans of James Taylor could easily appreciate. It, apparently, didn't catch on to the masses. Next thing I think I heard was a double whammy of his songs done by others. Old Flame as performed by Alabama is my favorite Alabama song ( I am from the state yet not really what I'd term a "real" fan) and It's My Job from Buffett's Coconut Telegraph really brought Buffet back to the nitty gritty storytelling he seemed to be doing less of. These two songs, as well as Minimum Love, made me stand up and notice how good a writer Mac really is. Add on an excellent voice with quality guitar picking and he's a rare talent indeed. Alabama has produced some jewels in Music. There's, of course, Hank Sr., and we have Will Owsley, The Swampers, Mac himself, Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), Jamie Johnson, Shelby Lynne, Tommy Shaw, Lionel Ritchie & The Commodores, Nat King Cole, Chuck Leavell, The Louvin Brothers, Sam Phillips, J.R. Cobb/Buddy Buie (Classics IV and Atlanta Rhythm Section), Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, Emmylou Harris, Donnie Fritts, W.C. Handy, Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn, Percy Sledge, Alabama, and so many more I can't recollect at the moment. Back to business though...we're proud to claim Mac as a home son and Minimum Love, even if it isn't his finest recording was my first introduction to him and I appreciate whoever posted it here.

    J.... W....

+John Werner Mac is from Belmont, MS.

    J.... W....

Thanks for the correction...I was of the opinion Mac was born in Alabama and moved to MS. at an early age or similar. I stand corrected. Mississippi certainly has been the "spiritual" birthplace of the blues for which so much of American music has spawn as well as a state that continues to produce prodigious musical talent.

    J.... W....

+John Werner ... Belmont MS is a border town that is half Belmont half Red Bay Alabama and mac spent most of his time growing up in Alabama. Muscle Shoals is about 40 miles away...

    J.... W....

Mac grew up in Belmont and Golden is between Red Bay and Belmont.

  25. D.... E....

Saw Mac sing this in the Orange Quarter in downtown Orlando c. 1981, wearing his trademark "Gulf" work shirt - ahhh the memories

  26. n.... ....

He sounds like James Taylor and Phil Collins with this song.

  27. R.... ....

Wow. It's. Been years. Since I've. Heard. This song ! So. Many memories back in the. Day . I was in. The nineth grade. In. JR high. What's. Known. Today. As middle. School . What. Such fun times.awww the. 1980,s what a decade

  28. R.... ....

    I. Haven't. Heard. This in a long. Long. Time ! Iit. Brings. Back. So. Memories

  29. o.... ....

Totally Ronnie and JT sound and era. Good tune.

  30. K.... P....

    Greatest!

  31. M.... W....

For the last 40 years, I thought Ronnie Milsap did this song, and could never find it.  I thought the title was "Maximum Pleasure from a Little More Love"....old age and bad ears...does sound a bit like JT, but definitely not Steely Dan!  Anyway, glad I found it, and thanks for bringing back a pretty decent song....

  32. E.... M....

This is an example of how the future is always equipped with 20/20 hindsight.  I wasn't impressed with this song when it first came out.  Now, about 30 years later, there are so many Hot New Country hits which use this same chord pattern and not as well as McAnally used it on this old chestnut.  Suddenly I have a new respect for McAnally and for this song.

  33. 7.... ....

This should have been Top 10 at least-I heard this song at the grocery store a few months back and it sounded so cool-it has that laid back early 80's perfect sound that I so love-I hear James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg in this song alot

  34. k.... ....

This came out around the time of my High School Graduation. I didn't know at the time how prophetic it really was.

  35. M.... ....

    i love this song classic

  36. J.... L....

Coming of age would have been drab without this song and "that's love" circa '83

  37. J.... K....

Can't seem to locate a legit MP3 download on any of the online music sites. Weird.

  38. p.... ....

I loved this cassette. I wish I could find this on cd..

    p.... ....

Me too--I first heard it on the radio in 1983 then again in 1986. Finally I got a 45 with this song back in the 90s. I have a list of "forgotten" songs I'm after.

  39. J.... T....

I was so sure that this was James Taylor that I scoured his entire discography, searching for this song. Obviously, I never found it. Very cool to find it here. Thank you!

  40. d.... m....

Great song!...I remember from back in the day...Sounds kinda like a James Taylor song....

  41. p.... ....

Wow i just heard this on xm yesterday and tried to find on itunes with no luck but thank you for posting. Great song.

  42. R.... K....

Thank you to the poster and to the reviewer who commented that this great song is on iTunes, at last!

  43. R.... K....

Another great song I've been trying to find for, literally, decades! Wish it were available on iTunes, but this is the next best thing.

  44. S.... R....

Sounds so much like James Taylor - including the style...

  45. F.... ....

So glad you posted this. This was one of my favorite songs back in thr 80's and I just about wore out my 45!
I was in HS when this came out and it was only MANY years later that I realized, after listening to the lyrics - and life experience - that the song is about a guy picking up a reeeeally ugly one night stand! lol

  46. t.... ....

LOVE THIS RECORD! heard it on XM radio and FINALLY remembered his name! simple and great tune!

  47. E.... m....

anyone know where i can download this to my ipod? Its not available on Itunes...i love it!! thanks for posting.

  48. L.... ....

God, I remember this....1983....it's like going back in time. Thanks for posting!!!

  49. C.... ....

This has to be the best song to narrowly miss the Top 40! Peaked at #41 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in April 1983. I remember it well. My area's FM station played it moderately as if it were a Top 10 hit! I didn't hear it again until 15 years later! Glad to see it resurface here on YouTube!

    Bravo, Mac McAnally!

  50. P.... R....

Thanks for posting this song/video, as I think it's not really well known, although it got some (deserved) airplay for a bit in the late seventies and early eighties. There was a period of time I couldn't find it online, but thanks to fans like you we will always be able to find an ancient or obscure track that we suddenly remember and want to hear right at that point!

  51. R.... M....

I had the privilege of working at Wishbone Recording Studio when Mac recorded this. It only took 2 bars and I recognized that I know every word to this song..... Such an Amazing Song.

  52. b.... ....

OMG I was a kid when I heard this. Good times, great memories.

  53. M.... G....

I remember playing this on the air as a very young disc - jockey WAYYYYY back in the day ! Thanks for posting.

  54. m.... ....

Love the piano intro, Mac sounds a little Steely Dan-ish on this one. I love this whole album!!

  55. M.... B....

@kevthe45man Ditto. Amazingly, you have expressed all of my sentiments about this record. I did many searches under James Taylor looking for this song. Once in a while, I would hear it on the department store muzak system & be sent back to high school. Love it love it.

  56. S.... ....

Where did you find this on iTunes? I just did a search and found nothing. :(

  57. R.... Y....

This is the only song that I remember Mac singing. Do you know another?

  58. f.... ....

I CANNOT believe you have this 45!! It was No 1 on "my charts" for 2 weeks in 1983, the year I graduated HS. Got considerable airplay on our local Top 40 channel. What a FANTASTIC song, wow. Thank you so much!!!

  59. k.... ....

Oh Yes! When I first heard this(in 1983) I thought ...James Taylor but I was bowled over by a fantastic record which I will love to my grave - Pop perfection that James would be proud of too.
Thanks for this slice of heaven Mac!! Hugely emotional tune.

  60. 9.... ....

Summer of '83 allover again!! Remember Boy Scout camp that year-they let us bring radios and we were listening to this...wow! Missed hearing it for years until I was at the store one day back about 1997 and heard it again-I came close to crying right there remembering all those carefree preteen youthful days...

  61. m.... ....

I have waited decades to hear this song again. I'm thrilled to find it here.

  62. J.... W....

KICK ASS! I have this 45 too but forgot all about it. Fantastic.
