Mac Davis - In The Ghetto Lyrics

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way

Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
The young man breaks the rules
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries

Hes "One hell of a man". I had a crush on him before I knew what gay was. Prolly why I love beards now. 😊

  3. D.... V....

I really enjoy this version. Mac wrote a lot of good songs and had a wonderful voice.

  4. A.... L....

I like Mac version to this song and Elvis Presley version to this song as well.

  7. R.... D....

I prefer the songwriters version. So heartfelt.

  8. J.... L....

Never would have been as big if not for Elvis taking it there. No disrespect to Mac, he is a great song writer.

    J.... L....

I agree,Mac did a nice job but Elvis really sang it with feeling, most likely because he grew up in extreme poverty and could relate.

  9. C.... H....

    Eric Cartman brought me here

  10. a.... ....

    Superb!!!

  11. G.... i....

Mac was the 70s & 80s king of songwriters. And I loved his show.

  12. J.... F....

Both versions of the song are excellent. I won't pick one over the other.

  13. D.... N....

It’s a heartfelt song no matter who sings it.

  14. T.... ....

I have been a Mac Davis fan since the early 1970s. He is one of several singer/songwriters I admire for his tremendous talent in composing and writing lyrics. Many people don't know that he wrote this song, as well as several others that were hits for other singers, but I always feel the author knows best what they were feeling when they wrote it, and give it the most authentic voice.

  15. M.... F....

    So handsome too

  16. K.... ....

merci pour cette belle chanson !!!

  17. o.... ....

The only complaint I have about this is...... that hunk of shit ovation guitar. It's not relevant but the backs are made of the same material as helicopter blades. I just don't like them. Rant over.

  18. 3.... l....

I remember standing with my mom outside of his trailer at the Ohio State Fair in 1974 so she could kiss him! It was so embarrassing! Lol

    3.... l....

    That's pretty awesome though !

  19. P.... ....

    the real mccoy

  20. F.... ....

    F.... ....

  21. M.... M....

I have always love Mac Davis. This is another great song he has done,

  22. P.... T....

He wrote and he does an amazing job. So did Elvis.

  23. B.... S....

    What a talent!

  24. r.... m....

Timeless and true lyrics that are still relevant today!

    r.... m....

    Unfortunately...

    r.... m....

Be the father to those kids.

    r.... m....

He struggled to write this song for years, the working title was Vicious Circle

  25. J.... A....

What does a white man know about living in the ghetto anyway ? And his momma cries lol

    J.... A....

    Ignorant cunt.

    J.... A....

Mac Davis, who wrote the song, was lower-middle class as a kid, but Elvis, who had a huge worldwide hit with it, was dirt poor as a kid, and only made any money when he hit it big in music.

    J.... A....

    You’re a moron

    J.... A....

Ghetto is the name of a city that was poor in Poland. Interesting how the word is derived

    J.... A....

In an interview with Mac here on YouTube, Mac said he was friends with a poor black kid, and couldn't understand why his friend had to live in a ghetto.

  26. S.... G....

Mac wrote a bunch of songs for Elvis. Talented guy I remember his show

  27. c.... s....

Elvis's version is ...really, really good...he's a better singer than Mac Davis...and Mac Davis is a great singer.

  28. M.... K....

    So true!

  29. C.... K....

Listen the song from Candy Stratton, it's amazing

    C.... K....

I did and I loved it! However, I must admit that it was a comment by someone there that people should listen to the Mac Davis version that brought me here. I was not aware that he wrote or sang this song. And after hearing Mac sing it, I honestly don't know which one I like more! Im old enough to remember watching his variety show with my siblings and enjoying it very much!

  30. p.... l....

so not fair. when does it get better for them/

  31. G.... T....

I love Elvis, but the creator of this song does it best. Awesome job, Mac!!

  32. D.... ....

the first time I heard this was on South Park

  33. S.... ....

A child needs a Dad. Poor me, victim mentality song. If you don’t have a Dad, at least finish school. Thanks LBJ!

  34. d.... ....

I first heard the Elvis version when I was a kid. That was great, but Mac wrote the song and also did a fine performance. Xlnt classic tune.

  35. Z.... ....

In my life, I have liked a whirlwind of music. I am bound to do it again.

  36. t.... ....

I have always liked his version.

    t.... ....

he wrote it so its not a version

  37. C.... M....

    Awesome

  38. B.... P....

No one commented? Wow!! I always liked this version better, but most people don't even know about it.

    B.... P....

@Raesling Undomiel Duh what did i just say read my comment again very slow

    B.... P....

Mac did a version of this song with just his guitar on a talk show in the 1990s that may be the best version of the tune. The backing instruments take away from the starkness of the song.

    B.... P....

    First time I heard it.

    B.... P....

When I worked at a country station in the early 90's this was the version I played.
