Luther Vandross - Are You There (With Another Guy) Lyrics

I'm standing on your doorstep
And I don't know what to do
Should I ring your doorbell or just walk away
My friends all say that you were never true
I'm hiding in the shadows

I hear the music coming out of your radio
Are you there with another guy instead of me
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
I hear the laughter and there's something I've got to know
Are you there with another guy instead of me
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)

I only know I love you and I couldn't say goodbye
So if there's another, I don't want to know
If you should go, I would surely die
I'm hiding in the shadows

And I see two silhouettes in back of your window shade
Are you there with another guy when I am gone
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
I can't believe you'd break the promises that you made
If you're there with another guy, I can't go on, oh no
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)

You would never leave me, hurt me or deceive me
I'm a fool to doubt you, worry so about you
Love requires faith, I've got a lot of faith but
(I hear the music coming out of your radio)

I only know I love you, and I couldn't say goodbye
So if there's another, I don't want to know
If you should go, I would surely die
I'm hiding in the shadows

Yeah, (In the shadows)
Really plotting, hiding in the shadows
I'm hiding in the shadows, yeah

(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
Pity, pity
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
Umm pah pitty
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
Umm pah pah, pity pity
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)

I hear the music coming out of your radio
Are you there with another guy instead of me
Oh no, don't tell me (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
No I can't believe it
I hear your laughter and there's something I've got to know
Are you there with another guy instead of me
Please don't say (Yeah, yeah yeah)
(It's a pity)

I hear the music coming out of your radio
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)

No, I can't believe it
I hear the laughter and there's something I got to know
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)

Yeah baby
Without my love, I pity the girl
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
Your radio
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
Oh yeah, yeah
Umm pah pah, pity the girl
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)
(Umm pah pah, pity the girl)

“Poom Pa Pa Pity The Girl”
    He had done it again.
Took another Dionne Warwick song and LUTHERized it!
Just like he did with ‘A House Is Not A Home’ & ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’

    y.... w....

Luther gave many a run for their money covering others songs.

    y.... w....

    @Dion Robinson  sure did

    y.... w....

+yomi williams This is just typical Luther man, just beautiful, poignant, understated and all those wonderful hallmarks that make his songs so special and great. I LOVE the backing vocals towards the end "oooh pa pa pity the giiirl"... God I miss him..

  35. J.... E....

    Thanks :)

  36. T.... C....

One of his best and unfortunately last albums. Love his rendition of this song.

  37. b.... n....

Many kudos to Mr. Vandross for taking the effort in interpreting this classic, Unfortunately it fails for the temporarily of its' execution.Luther is hampered by the maudlin 80's production in trying to duplicate his previous achievements. If only those that were in control of could have let Bacharach and David's work breathe with a simple and elegant production this would have been memorable. At best this is a rare oddity for the aficionado.

    b.... n....

    Typical

    b.... n....

    berry nutter
I have to agree. The ‘80s sucked for so many reasons. The only problem I have with his late career is his arraignments, which he must have thought were necessary to stay on the charts.

  38. M.... ....

Luther didn't have to write a song to make it his own. All he had to do is just sing it. Luther was most definitively a Crooner Extraordinaire. Yeeeah!!!

  39. y.... ....

Im a MASSIVE fan of Luther's,have many of his albums and for me the greatest soul singer that ever lived.Yes Marvin Gaye,Aretha Franklin,Stevie Wonder etc were all fantastic too,but none of them could consistently make great album after great album like Luther did. For me some of his later albums suffered with too many duets, raps etc but this album married classic Luther with modern sounds brilliantly..this song demonstrating that perfectly.you are a LEGEND Luther.. RIP

  40. T.... ....

love it thanks for posting this luther vandross smove grove, thsnks

  41. J.... E....

@prbylw Yep. I think at that time radio wanted Luther to play the "newer-styled" productions from his CDs. Not surprisingly the best songs were in this style of songs like this, that's where he truly shined.

  42. C.... ....

OMG...I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. I could not remember what album it was on. Most radio stations didn't even play this song. Thanks for posting!!!

  43. G.... L....

Had to live this, but I still love this song. R.I.P. my brother Luther. You are truly missed.

  44. J.... N....

    thx for the info.

  45. 1.... ....

BABY I LOVE THIS SONG. THE INSTUMENTAL & LUTHA'S VOICE NOT LUTHER..LOL!! COMPLEMENTS EACH OTHER. ANOTHER CLASSIC

  46. J.... Y....
