In the other videos, they talked about Jimmy being a prison guard. He gets his freedom locking other men in cells. I think the “cell” here refers to Jimmy being locked in his own metaphorical cage.

“My Cell” serves as an introduction to Jimmy Sparks, the son of the alcoholic Gloria and single father to Junior. He sits alone and contemplates his current situation. It appears this song is either during or just after his relationship with Bonnie, Junior’s mother, who eventually leaves him to start a new life in Denver.

The band’s website provides a short description of the song:

“My Cell,” the first song in Chapter Three, finds Jimmy alone with his problems in his trailer, with its primitive painted landscapes standing in for actual windows.

Okay so i originally thought this vid was before leader of the landslide because of the dog showing up but im thinking the dog isnt really there and jimmy is imagining it thinking of it and junior

*THEORIES AND EXPLANATIONS*

1. “Donna”
Frank (died 1954) and Donna (died 1979) are Gloria’s parents. In the MV, Donna and Frank is building the House of Sparks. Gloria is haunted by her past, as we can see when she looks at the picture of her parents, in the ‘Gloria’ MV. This is maybe why she’s drinking a lot. Gloria doesn’t love her husband. Her life is so messed up that she “prays for a funeral, and sing it like hallelujah”. What I don’t understand is why she took her shirt off while shouting in the open air? Is she that angry with her parents?

2. “Life in the City”
Here, we see more of Gloria’s biggest regret. It was New Year’s eve. She did drugs, so she was high. She’s outside drinking in a Manhattan bar. She meets a random guy, had sex with him, and voila, she conceived Jimmy. Back in their house, Gloria sees her husband already sleeping. We see a note saying that her husband came to the hospital to see his sick mother. But the question is the line “And I miss my dad and Cleopatra sitting on a phone” and why is there a stanza from ‘Sleep on the Floor’? Is this story connected to the ballad of Cleopatra?

3. “Gloria”
The MV elaborates the dangers of being alcoholic — domestic violence, bad parenting. Gloria is being a bad mother while raising baby Jimmy. She’s stubborn. She always fights with his husband. However, it is clear that her husband loves her, and is very understanding. She hits her husband with a bottle of alcohol. This may be a symbol that her alcoholism make her lose people in her life, as she left her husband, wounded. But the lyrics say that Gloria doesn’t want to wake up after getting drunk. She wants to die. However, she came back running to their house for Jimmy.

4. “It Wasn’t Easy to be Happy For You”
Junior is having a teenage heartbreak. She’s smoking and she’s seeing a sexy blonde girl seducing him. It turns out in the end that he’s just hallucinating because he’s been smoking. It may be inferred that the girl is the only one making him happy in the messy life he’s living, as we see also in ‘Leader of the Landslide’ MV. However, given the circumstances, “it wasn’t easy to be happy”. The girl left Junior.

5. “Leader Of The Landslide”
Junior is unlike Jimmy. He hates Jimmy being an alcoholic. We can assume that Jimmy was physically abusing Junior, as we can see when Jimmy was about to hit Junior, Junior was throwing self defense martial arts. However, we saw a softer side of Jimmy at the start when they’re about to bury the dog who’s probably lived with them for a long time since that dog was there since the “Donna” MV. The dog was also probably a symbol of Junior’s Mother. When Junior was lying in bed, he saw vision of her mother. Later in “My Cell” MV, Jimmy also saw that same dog. Bonnie might be the one Junior is referring to as the leader of landslide. Before she left, they were all happy as seen in the flashbacks. When she left, it all fell apart.

6. “Left For Denver”
So Junior is sad and at the same time curious why her mother left. He hates her mother leaving him with her father. He ended up burning the piano/keyboard that Gloria was playing before. Her mother, Bonnie, probably played that piano a lot too. “What did you know that I didn’t?” While searching for answers, he found a gun in his father’s things. Did Jimmy kill Bonnie?

7. “My Cell”
In the start of video, Jimmy was having sex with the girl who entered his house at the latter part of ‘Leader of the Landslide’ MV. The shark entered the room hitting him hard. It turned out that the girl, Julie, is only after the wallet of Jimmy, probably for unpaid debt. While the girl is about to leave, Jimmy tried to stop the girl, which reminded him of his wife. Another woman left him helpless (First, Gloria, then Bonnie, then Julie). He also saw a vision of the dog.

8. “Jimmy Sparks”
The lyrics explains it all. Jimmy was a prison guard so he’s used to being a tough man. This can also be an irony because the ‘My Cell’ song talks about Jimmy being imprisoned by his emotions, by the past, or by his alcoholism. The lyrics explains how Jimmy was actually a good father while Junior grew up. He struggled raising Junior alone. He even gambled in bars to pay for Junior’s hospitalization. He incurred debt. Growing up, Jimmy advised Junior to not to let hitchers in the car because it’s “us or them”.
Later in life, after the ‘My Cell’ scene, it was 3am and Jimmy is wounded while walking alone in the road. That road again, where Gloria had an accident. “Now Jimmy's son is trying to make his way home, His graveyard shift had ended and it was starting to snow, He sees an old man walking barefoot alone, His old man waved his hands with tears in his eyes But Jimmy's son just sped up and remembered daddy's advice, No you don't ever give a hitcher a ride.”
This reminded me of the lyrics in ‘Donna’ — “You love to judge strangers' karma”

The consistency of these scenery are amazing. First in Gloria we see Gloria throwing that glass bottle towards her husband, then in “Left for Denver” Junior throwing the matches fire towards the piano, and lastly here the woman throwing Jimmy’s wallet. Amazing how three chapters are so different, yet still resemble each other in so many subtle ways.

These stories are so compelling and truly make you feel the longing for something good he/she or they desire real or not. The hole in this life sometimes just can't be filled, at least not with the speed and thoroughness we expect. Amazing work from the music to the actors and short stories being told in each video.

My favorite part is in the end when the song sings "all alone .." and for each time it repeats it flashes through moments in the family where a member is feeling alone ..
Generational lonliness .
It's like carrying a spirit of loniless through the generations.

I think the point is that addiction is a disease and not just bad choices. While bad choices play a part. The truth is addiction is a cycle that can be passed down thru generations.

...when Jimmy grabs at the woman's leg...the look on his face :( ....his eyes are begging for some sign that their connection was real...that maybe despite her having set him up...that something between them had been real, even if just for a moment....my heart then broke for him when this woman instead of giving him a moment of kindness turns on him with a look of disgust and hurts him too. So much pain drifting through the generations of the Sparks family...Jimmy is clearly flawed, but there's a childlike innocence I see in him....he deeply wants to fill the void of his absent alcoholic mother - this leaves him vulnerable to being taken advantage of by the kinds of flawed women he attracts.

I interpreted this scene in a whole other way, I thought she was trying to escape in the confusion and he was just holding her so she would have to confront the consequences too. I mean, the look of horror she gives to him while he is holding her down and the other guy is wrapping her with his arms... then jimmy seems to look at her like: Yes, you are coming down with me. Idk, that is what I understood from the scene.

@3 oh, i thought she was cheating on someone... Is just that, it doesn't seems like Jimmy has a lot of money to steal anyway, but then the wallet wouldn't made sense.
