Lulu - A House Is Not A Home Lyrics
A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
But a chair is not a house
And a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight
A room is still a room
Even when there's nothing there but gloom
But a room is not a house
And a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart
Now and then, I call your name
And suddenly a face appears
And it ends, it ends in tears
So, darling, have a heart
Don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stair and turn the key
Please, be there
Still in love with me

Lulu A House Is Not A Home Comments
This beautiful bacharach ballad demands power and control and Lulu exhibits both qualities
I find this track very moving.
Love this version
Nice version of this great tune. Go, Lulu!!
Lulu's vocal style is so distinctive and she does this tune beautifully. I also like the version done by Eydie Gorme just posted.
What a lovely version of this song.
Checkout lulu singing 'to sir with love' on American idol its gobsmacking
lulu never lacked the ability , just never got the material to work with , just goes to show how important great song writers are , inspired lyrics by the great hal david ,
Wonderful interpretation! Pure!
I love this version better than Luther Vandross'
Love her voice I don't know why she was not more popular in this country?
My music theory professor last semester was asked almost the same exact question, and he responded with, "Oh yes, the genius is still here, and it's very much alive, however hidden it might be. Check spotify; many artists who are not showcased in the mainstream go there, and there's always a new and creative writer popping up there... forget pandora radio; it sucks."
This lyric always makes me cry.
It's so emotional.
Kulu did full justice to this one! Very beautifully rendered the way Bacharach would have wanted.
@classicvinylbiz i so agree with you, life seems to have gotten to be more tumultuous. we didn't know how good we had it (or rather how simpler things were). i remember reading an article in the late 70's which speculated as to what the year 2000 would be like. one author said that we would look back on the 1970's as the "good old days"
Wow, I had forgotten about the beautiful crystal clear clarity and purity of Lulu's voice. This is a beautiful recording.
Thanks for posting!
lulu is a good singer but i think dusty springfield version is much
much better..
Thanks, CVB for posting this more obscure, yet wonderful version of a classic...
great stuff.
mrScififan2...your question is good...just keep looking, you will find your answer...yes, music is music...not as before, but once in awhile, you can find one....this was great.
@mrScififan2 I realize you are asking a rhetorical question, but I've often wondered whether there is any more musical / compositional genius in the world, or whether it all sort of evanesced at the end of the 70s/early 80s. Or maybe it has something to do with how complicated life has become (remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon?), and that the "music" that is "composed" today is merely the true reflection of the tumult of our existence, as compared to that of life when Bacharach composed.
lulu sings like an angel. i loved the vandross cover, but this equals it. why can't music sound like this anymore?
