Lowkey - Children Of Diaspora Lyrics

[Lowkey:]
Don't you wonder what became of the children of diaspora?
Those that innovated in their ways and their vernacular
Those that saw their traces in the faces of the massacred
I wonder what became of them, tell me what became of them..
I wonder what became of them, tell me what became of them..
I wonder what became of them, tell me what became of them..
I wonder what became of them, tell me what became of them..

Lost in this city of fog rarely seen by the sun
Just 'cause you're both but neither doesn't mean that you're none
Never captains of the ship but they mistook us for some
Passengers
Now we're stuck here singing soul music from diaspora
Your hosts can't relate to your sense of dislocation
The type of pain that cannot be contained in a dissertation
"Diaspora" the reason that the terrified are setting fires
"Diaspora" the reason they couldn't jeopardise Zephaniah
Considered as a compliment if our beauty is fetishized
Your history is power, that's the reason some are petrified
Colonial mimic, mascot crying behind a mask
Or a man with amnesia trying to find his past
Anthony Walker never had a weapon but they still got him
Stephen Lawrence never had a weapon but they still got him
Mark Duggan never had a weapon but they still shot him
They call them first world diaspora problems

Don't you wonder what became of the children of diaspora?
Those that innovated in their ways and their vernacular
Those that saw their traces in the faces of the massacred
I wonder what became of them
Tell me what became of them
Zoha Hadeed was a child of diaspora
So fear not, fear not
Edward Said was a child of diaspora
So fear not, fear not

[Mai Khalil:]
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no, no, no, no, no, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no, no, no, no, no, no

[Lowkey:]
Since the middle passage either sink or you swim
Bleach the pigment of skin and pray its privilege trickling in
But are we missing the link?
Diasporas the reason MJ did to his nose what they did to the sphinx
And why Marley made the most classic of art
The reason Gabby Douglas didn't put her hand on her heart
The reason Malcolm Little changed his name to X
The reason the President's melanin remain a threat
Ahmed made a clock, they arrested him and mangled his name
But the root of the word is to thank and to praise
Racism manifests in many cancerous ways
We must rally for change in these most tragic of days
Cos Emmett Till didn't have a weapon, but they still got him
Tamir Rice never had a weapon but they still shot him
Alton Sterling never had a weapon but they still shot him
They call them first world diaspora problems

Don't you wonder what became of the children of diaspora?
Those that innovated in their ways and their vernacular
Those that saw their traces in the faces of the massacred
I wonder what became of them
Tell me what became of them
Nina Simone was a child of diaspora
So fear not, fear not
Frantz Fanon was a child of diaspora
So fear not, fear not

[Mai Khalil:]
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no, no, no, no, no, no
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no
Pledge no allegiance to the flag, no, no, no, no, no, no

We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no, no, no, no, no, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no
We never bow to the Queen, no, no, no, no, no, no

  20. R.... ....

If only everyone could smile alot more at one another in the street, shops, parks or wherever. Imagine how much more connected we could all be rather than fear or be weary of each other all the time and constantly keeping ourselves to ourselves, disconnected or lost in our headphones or connected more to our mobile devices and staring at our screens as that seems so much like the safer options these days. Just for a few split seconds drop that barrier just enough to break that ice or put others at ease enough to respond back with a smile. That then could lead to conversations, new friendships, potential relationships or just make someone's day a much better and more uplifted one....Yet another lovely Low-key track that I've discovered later on with an equally lovely and uplifting video just showing humanity at it's most beautiful....

  21. f.... ....

Been listening to Hiphop since 1980, run dmc, grandmaster flash etc, My fave of all time is Krs one an intelligent underground rapper, from the people with the respect of the people, Lowkey is from the same mould.

  36. B.... D....

Never bow to queen No, I am born and bred in Manchester and have been saying that line all my life, great to hear it on this track

  37. B.... R....

Fuck the queen and the regime

  38. r.... ....

This is such an underrated track. Even just the words "so fear not", that he repeats to say that there is hardship in dislocation and not belonging, but there is also the potential for greatness, of substance, to rise out of a diaspora and serve as role models for people who may feel lost or are actively being misled by others... So deep!

    r.... ....

Well said. "So fear not" encapsulates the attitude of uncertainty many children of diaspora have. It gives hope and sometimes, hope is enough to allow someone to push forward through difficult times.

    So fear not.
This line inspires me to become the role model you have described. People who grew up just like me, sons of immigrant taxi drivers, are on the streets selling coke while I'm at university. And my heart genuinely goes out to them, their lives are in a choke hold and they're lost to hopelessness. So much potential but all gone to waste. The scariest part is I could have been exactly like them. I've been exposed to drugs enough to know I could succumb to evil temptations. I know myself well enough to see my capacity for doing bad. I've been hurt enough to let out my anger on the world. There is no difference between me, who's going to secure a high paying job and ascend from working class to middle class, and the thug on the street. We are all the same. We come from the same struggle. I was just privileged enough to not fall victim like they did. For this reason I am extremely motivated to make the most of the life I've been blessed with cos I know how different it could've been. I am forever grateful for the life I have.

"Those who saw their traces in the faces of the massacred"

Thanks for letting me vent haha

This song is really beautiful. The children of diaspora are our brothers and we should help them feel empowered and prosperous in our country, regardless of where they are from or what their religion is. Their stories are so rich and we could learn so much if we just listened.
