Lower Dens - Brains Lyrics

Starting the day
Staying awake
Everything will change
While you're asleep
While you're breathing
Do you believe?
No one is waiting
Brains without names

I found myself turning back to look
At the seas of people beneath me
Betrayed the design by release of immature emotion
I went to work
Had my suit jacket and hat in hand

A gate's crashed and flung wide
Used by our servants;
Heads are hanging
I went to church and forgot I ever could believe
Questions for the past of their clear minds
Were their thoughts without designation and division
Something desperate's up my sleeve
And no lines allow for mapping
Cause I close my eyes and feel the teeth of the machine
Walking on
Us underneath
Ever harder to believe
I was ever holding my suit jacket
And hat in hand
Your nightmares/your creation
I objected with a knife
And when I finally let my guard down
I was in the middle of the sea and drowning

Don't be afraid
Don't be afraid
Everything will change
While you're asleep
While you're breathing
Do you believe?
No one is waiting
Brains without names

    Echoes of Joy Division :)

  41. D.... D....

Janna breaks gender barriers on so many levels. It's amazing.

    D.... D....

@EmporerAxel I think it's naive to think feminist movements would lose momentum had equality been achieved. But that's because I don't buy into the idea that there is still a "long long way" to equality in most sectors of society because I believe claims like these are to be supported by both facts and an objective oriented way of thinking, Where you acknowledge the problem and set the goals you want to reach. Saying we have a "long long way" to achieve something no one has ever even correctly defined like social equality is a wonderful tool of manipulation and it can be used any time without us even seeing it coming. It is especially dangerous when believing in it becomes the status quo. When that happens, the burden of proof is set on those who disagree with it (which, in my opinion, is the standard way of thinking. Just imagine I had simply said I didn't agree with the first comment without any logic support. I would've been seen as a bigoted idiot who hates everyone that doesn't look like the usual man or woman), and using logic on people who don't acknowledge its value can be really hard. I don't want to sound like a lunatic but controlling masses' behaviour and thinking is not a major task. Hitler did it for a long time and that's just one example.

About feminists not controlling the media; I think that they don't need to actively demonstrate power since they own the status quo but it's undeniable (at least from what I'm used to seeing) that the amount of feminist friendly articles and overall rhetoric in the media is way more prevalent than anti-feminist thinking. Besides, feminism (earlier, more acceptable forms of it) has been around for almost a century and I dare to think it has been a big topic since the very beginning. Anyway, I don't oppose its earlier forms. It's just 3rd wave that bothers me.
Although I agree with you that it's taboo, I think that only goes to show how much it really is the status quo because uninformed people dare not to address it out of fear of being wrong when they put it into question. Then again I'm not saying there are no retrogrades and close minded far right wingers that see it as taboo because their misogyny does not allow them to think otherwise but that's not the norm, and frankly those people are elders mostly so they won't be around for a long time. But I don't know, I'm speculating mostly.

Anyway, if they don't own the media they still own Academia, and education is not to be made fun of. It's a BIG pillar of modern society and if we let them be the sole providers of knowledge in that slice of the society we're gonna have big problems in the future.

Anyway, I digress immensely. I disagree with you on a vital point. When you say:
"There is no need to celebrate "normal" gender expression at the moment because no one is discriminated against for it."
I don't think celebration should come from seeing someone being courageous and passively "fighting" whatever oppression they are allegedly feeling (as I said, I don't think it has significant value nowadays) because I see it as having a potential for hate and discrimination against both whoever disagrees with it and/or whoever is not allegedly oppressed. Instead, I think we should focus on whether or not that person has done anything of value for the society and judge them based on that. This works if you don't think this person is in any way limited to produce valuable actions by the alleged oppression, like myself. But it can also work if adopted your point of view, since fighting that oppression is something she would be able to do and so constitute a valuable action towards society. In this scenario she would be "inspiring" not because she looks "like a boy" but because she has done something awesome like donating money to stop Boko Haram from killing innocent girls or, at a lower level, for speaking out against what she perceives as being signs of privilege for white, cis, trans, gay, male, female, black, gender ambiguous or not, etc. people and, therefore, being valuable to achieve any kind of equality. You can argue that it is so hard to show yourself as someone ambiguous (that the oppression is so strong) that filming herself already constitutes a valuable action. I wouldn't agree with that because I don't see inequality to be strong enough anywhere in the West to make that a hard enough effort to deserve merit. In undeveloped countries it might have been different, but here it's like filming yourself if you're ugly or fat or have a lazy eye. I like to believe we have evolved to a point where showing yourself as gender ambiguous is so trivial that it shouldn't be seen as a great achievement. Thanks for making it this far, it's been awesome talking with you. :)

    P.S: "Abnormal" definition: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/abnormal

I was not using it in a derogatory sense, I used the inverted commas to suggest it was more like the synonym of "unusual" than like a synonym of "unaccepted". So, at least in my respect, your argument is invalid. That's because my "abnormal" was purely the expression of a statistical truth: people like this are not common, they're a minority. They don't lose the status of person because of this. It just means you don't see them as often. So it doesn't prove any prejudice, it just proves they're not common. It's like saying left-handed people are "abnormal", I'm left-handed and I agree with that. :D  But I get your point anyhow, I just don't agree with it. Thanks again!

    D.... D....

Well, I just typed out a response and it appears Youtube ate it so I'm done hahaha. But yeah, I get where you're coming from but I think it just comes down to our having different experiences of society. I think people can be admired both for personal intergrity as much as their compassion or other character traits. If something like gender expression were really so "trivial" in western society today I doubt that we'd even need to be having this conversation. The truth is it's easy to dismiss gender expression that deviates from the norm as trivial if you've never experienced it firsthand. There's certainly a lot more prejudice than is noticeable at first glance or in the media because people are less forthcoming about it, it's about dismantling internalised prejudices and biases (which is what a lot of 3rd wave feminism focuses on and why a lot of people who haven't dealt with to a great extent, or come to appreciate, subtle sexism that is prevalent in our culture tend to disagree with it) that people experience on a daily basis. Oh, and I took abnormal to mean "unaccepted" rather than "unusual", so that was probably a miscommunication. Anyway, it's been nice having a decent conversation in the Youtube comment section about this kind of stuff haha:)

    D.... D....

@EmporerAxel That's ok. I guess it's a way of looking at it. I don't have much more to say, so have a nice day! :)

    D.... D....

    You too buddy:)

    D.... D....

True Janna breaks gender barriers, but saying she does so "on so many levels" is a bit of an exaggeration. No?

  42. u.... ....

He looks like a male Aubrey Plaza.

    u.... ....

    he is a woman

    u.... ....

    Oh shit

    u.... ....

  49. l.... ....

It happens. I feel sorry about them, lol

  50. M.... B....

I don't know why this comment received so many thumbs down. Sun in Your Eyes is an AMAZING song.

  51. i.... ....

If you think anybody is going to remember this derivative BS in a few years, your kidding yourself. Lower Dens greatest claim to fame thus far is making it onto the Banana Republic Factory Store seasonal play CD. Relegated to a commercial soundtrack to a boring retail store, nice.

  52. m.... ....

Okay, I just found this band tonight after a friend emailed me and told me it was like Siouxsie and the Banshees. I love this stuff!

  53. M.... R....

    It's actually a women... Jana hunter ;)

  54. S.... C....

    Jana Hunter fucking rules.

  55. l.... ....

I think you have a bad taste for music...

  61. k.... ....

SavageMusicClique said: "Jana Hunter is the woman in the video. Most of the vocals in this song are Geoff Graham... a man."
But then he removed his comment. I wonder why.

  62. k.... ....

Is that a man or a woman?

  63. Y.... P....

No one gives a shit. Just enjoy good music bro.

  64. G.... B....

My new go to song for getting my dreary ass out of bed.

  65. d.... ....

    Vocal sounds like Karen O

  66. L.... H....

Jana is an incredible talent. I am totally fascinated by this album. I have been listening to it for a year now. The theme is intriguing. The music and lyrics are incredible. Ah-mazing talent!

  67. M.... M....

If u like this u may like Moscow Metro - Spirit of a city, a new post punk band from Ireland..

  68. A.... ....

The song is preety nice, but there's no fucking doubt that Sun is in your eyes from Grizzly Bear is the best 2012 song

  69. g.... ....

HA! I totally thought oy Steve Buscemi immediately too! Then I remembered he has a son who is in a band, so I thought maybe this was him but it's not.

  70. H.... C....

    @MecuryClock yes very "Motorik" drumming.

  79. h.... ....

My fave thing about December tbh.

  80. S.... ....

Wow, thank fck for end of year lists... I may have never discovered these guys otherwise. Along with many others.

  81. v.... n....

see pitchfork top 100 songs of the year, number 84

  82. M.... ....

I listened to this album/band for the first time last night and was blown away. Very Neu!-esque drumming.

  83. G.... ....

I'm with you. This song is gonna be hard to repeat for anyone in the future and I'm surprised it's getting snubbed from songs of the year lists. I think people just haven't found it yet, or listened to it enough

  84. R.... A....

this song, this album, this band, makes wanna scream, laught, and cry I cant belive the level of perfection of this music, is from another lever, this is amazing, this song really touch my BRAIN and makes me feel the best feel ever, EPIC

  85. l.... ....

Beautiful music. I've met Jana Hunter and she's lovely!! think I scared her with my blatant gushing adoration though :p

  86. J.... ....

Song of the year, in my opinion.

This band is on another level, people don’t realize it. If Lower Dens passes their whole career in obsurity people are going to look back a couple decades from now and they’re gonna be like “how the fuck?”

  87. L.... F....

    Wow, this is really great...

  88. F.... C....

Listened over and over to this tonight... Makes me feel wonderful...

  89. F.... C....

Could have been a little farth escaping too!

  90. a.... t....

when it starts reminds me the track "Dont' say no" (Can, from the album Saw Delight).
    and i like it.

  91. R.... ....

    Love the smile at 0:46 ; )

  92. R.... ....

No deep review or analysis. I fucking LOVE this song & video to bits. Thats all.

  93. A.... M....

That is always quite a journey. I came from black metal shoegaze, took me an hour to get here.

  94. S.... S....

I've returned from the weird side of youtube to listen to some great music.
