Every few years he'd hear this song, and remember that he loved me. Did I remember him? Did I remember loving him? We had dinner, on the beach. It was wonderful. He's going bald, my hair is gray. His eyesight is shot, my hands tremble. But we remembered that perfect golden summer and were barefoot and young again. Yes. Yes I remember loving him.

I’m 67. I waited until my wife turned 18 before we married, but that was 1971, and shes 64 now, but I can’t see that she’s changed all that much. She looked really young when I met her, but I was just back from VN and she was still in high school. I remember that made me feel a little pervy, but the time commitment should vindicate my intentions. If I had it to do all over again, I’d marry her again in a heartbeat. I’ve made some bad decisions in my life, but marrying my wife was the best move I ever made. We’re still inseparable, and I’ve never been happier and this song reminds me of her.

I wish I could meet John. They were supposed to come to my state (Utah) back in 2000 or so, but they cancelled :(

I was in my mid-teens when the Lovin' Spoonful were having hits in the UK. I liked them a lot, but now I like them very much indeed! I've dug out my old Greatest Hits album (bought early 70's) and restored Ye Olde Record Deck to working condition and it's like Heaven on Earth. Did they make a bad song? Such talent.

It was the greatest time I had in my life, till I met my wife who's 10 years younger than I. That was about 38 years ago.
She's still the greatest thing in my life and we're still in love. As we both have Jesus we have a great eternity to look forward to.

This song is highly derivative of a 1930's blues song called Prison Wall Blues. The chorus is a straight lift from that song, but different lyrics.

Really P Watts, who did "prison wall blues" in the 1930's? You're not suggesting the Spoonful ripped off that old blues tune are you? Anyway I love John Sebastian and the Loving Spoonful and this is a GREAT tune!

@MusicMC1 The chorus is exactly the same.Some of the words are the same too. The verses are somewhat different though. John Sebastian had a background in jugbands and that's obviously where he picked this song up. Maybe its a tribute but the song is credited to him when really its a remake of a very old tune. @MusicMC1 This was not the only Gus Cannon song to become a hit in the 1960's. Walk Right In (Rooftop Singers/Dr Hook) was written by him as well and apparently he was correctly credited on that one. He was still alive when The Younger Girl was made so its possible he gave Sebastian permission to use his song.

@MusicMC1  The Hondells was a group of popular L.A. studio singers and musicians (Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Chuck Girard, etc.) who are best known for their 1964 Top 10 hit "Little Honda."  They also charted with "My Buddy Seat" in 1965 and "Younger Girl" in 1966.

Younger Girl was released by The Lovin' Spoonful, The Hondells and The Critters.

Little Honda was also released by The Beach Boys and it is usually the third or fourth song in their current show.

Not even close to the Critters version.

This, of course, is John's original version of a classic song.  The hit version was by The Critters and you can find it here on You Tube.  Lead singer of The Critters was Don Ciccone, who would later sing lead on The Four Seasons' last #1 hit, "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)."

The Critters had the hit with this song and chances are that it was their version that most people heard first back in the 60's.  But Sebastian wrote the songs and the Lovin' Spoonful recorded it for their first album.  It was the Crittes who covered the song.  Both versions are worth listening to.
