Lovin' Spoonful, The - Younger Girl Lyrics

She's one of those girls who seems to come in the spring
One look in her eyes and you forget everything
You had ready to say
And I saw her today, yeah

A younger girl keeps a-rollin' 'cross my mind
No matter how much I try, I can't seem to leave her memory behind

I remember her eyes, soft, dark, and brown
Said she'd never been in trouble, even in the town

A younger girl keeps a-rollin' 'cross my mind
No matter how much I try, I can't seem to leave her memory behind

A younger girl keeps a-rollin' 'cross my mind
And should I hang around, acting like her brother
In a few more years, they'd call us right for each other
And why?
If I wait I'll just die, yeah

A younger girl keeps a-rollin' 'cross my mind
No matter how much I try, I can't seem to leave her memory behind

I remember her eyes, soft, dark, and brown
Said she'd never been in trouble, even in the town

A younger girl keeps a-rollin' 'cross my mind

She's one of those girls who seems to come in the spring
One look in her eyes and you forget everything

Lovin' Spoonful, The Younger Girl Comments
  1. J.... B....

My wife is five years younger than I am! And she's the only one I ever think about! She's my Lady! Like in the song by rod Stewart cut across shorty! I cut across for my wife! My life would not be in jeopardy! Like in the Peter Townsend song my wife!

  2. J.... B....

True of like the Beatles strawberry Fields forever LLC in Ashbury San Francisco! 1966!

  3. J.... B....

The lyrics in the song are very beautiful and sort of psychedelic! But very passionate! I'm not sure which way is swung?

  4. J.... B....

I'm from San Francisco born in 1955! The Bay area was the epicenter music! Airplane! Carlos Santana! Me! Namaste!

  8. M.... M....

Even as a kid in the sixties, I knew this line was silly: "said she'd never been in trouble, even in town." Still love the song, though!

  12. G.... P....

I dated a younger girl once but she got in trouble in town (she doubled parked, I think) so I had to break up with her. Now I act like her brother.

  13. j.... t....

Reminds me so much of my husband before we got married. He went home and phoned me to play this song. Still can't forget he died 9 years ago xx

  14. R.... J....

This is NOT the original. Sounds like John Sebastian covered it solo....great song.

Great song and and always reminds me of my "younger girl" whom I married back in '72.....and she's still by my side!! ;-)

  23. D.... B....

    Wonderful old song,,

  24. B.... ....

I was 17, he was 22. We spent several months together one barefoot summer and then both went off to separate lives never to see each other again. Out of the blue I got a letter last year. Every few years he'd hear this song, and remember that he loved me. Did I remember him? Did I remember loving him? We had dinner, on the beach. It was wonderful. He's going bald, my hair is gray. His eyesight is shot, my hands tremble. But we remembered that perfect golden summer and were barefoot and young again. Yes. Yes I remember loving him.

The Critters covered this song and had a sizeable US hit with it. It reached no. 38 in UK.

  28. s.... ....

    The Hondells version is better.

    s.... ....

i'm with you on that! the Hondell's version is the best!

Really my wife is 6 years older then me that is the way i like it.

  33. T.... P....

this is a nice song good group.

  34. c.... ....

I’m 67. I waited until my wife turned 18 before we married, but that was 1971, and shes 64 now, but I can’t see that she’s changed all that much. She looked really young when I met her, but I was just back from VN and she was still in high school. I remember that made me feel a little pervy, but the time commitment should vindicate my intentions. If I had it to do all over again, I’d marry her again in a heartbeat. I’ve made some bad decisions in my life, but marrying my wife was the best move I ever made. We’re still inseparable, and I’ve never been happier and this song reminds me of her.

  35. C.... M....

I wish I could meet John. They were supposed to come to my state (Utah) back in 2000 or so, but they cancelled :(

  36. P.... S....

totally 64 to 69 super greaght

  37. c.... y....

Search for 'Prison Wall Blues' GUS CANNON (1930) -- you'll be glad you did! because "those prison wall blues keep a-rollin' across my mind."

  38. J.... H....

A much better version than the original by the critters.🎼🎸🎹🎷🎵🎤😊

    J.... H....

  39. R.... G....

Is this a different mix/recording than the single? The tempo seems different.

  40. p.... n....

  42. t.... ....

They were great composers and musicians that's for sure......penning beauiful lyrics and soul relaxing melodies.... https://twitter.com/CD_Ania

  43. A.... H....

I was in my mid-teens when the Lovin' Spoonful were having hits in the UK. I liked them a lot, but now I like them very much indeed! I've dug out my old Greatest Hits album (bought early 70's) and restored Ye Olde Record Deck to working condition and it's like Heaven on Earth. Did they make a bad song? Such talent.

  44. B.... ....

Couldn't believe she was interested in me !!?? Made for some fun teen years. Where did they go ? Where did she go ?

  45. l.... c....

    great stuff

  46. l.... ....

Saw John in Holland, Mi recently, what a great evening. Many stories and memories. It's good to go back. Thanks Park Theatre.

  47. T.... G....

Ok but the Critters version is the classic one.

  48. 4.... ....

    Oh my sweet Yvonne

  49. R.... C....

John was a major talent of the 60s

  50. e.... n....

the critters cover of this song went up on the record charts not a hit for the lovin spoonful

  51. L.... R....

Love this song, even if I have always married older girls. I appreciate the music, the lyrics, the romanticism. In another life, maybe I too would have liked younger girls. I don't condemn those who do. Love comes where it will. As music does.

  52. E.... B....

The child molesters must love this song.

    E.... B....

Only someone who rapes little girls would say that about this song. Get out, you filthy pedo!

  53. J.... S....

How sad-- All the history and values forgotten. yesterdays truth and goodness is now being erased and what systems we held dear and now being erased. So sad so many have been lied too over the years.

  54. C.... R....

A great song but pretty much completely ripped off of Cannon's Jug Stompers' Prison Wall Blues

    C.... R....

Wow... you're right! Just listened to Prison Wall Blues... it's the same song, same chord changes. Someone should sue Sebastian.

  55. C.... R....

A great song but pretty much completely ripped off of Cannon's Jug Stompers' Prison Wall Blues

    C.... R....

Checked that out and the only thing I could find in common was 'Rolling cross my mind'

  56. k.... l....

I have this vinyl LP of the Spoonful's from way back then...

  57. B.... S....

WOW! Haven't heard this one since flight training Fall 1967. Thank You. What memories.

  62. j.... s....

thanks John S for this tune  love all three versions of it, The Critters and the Hondels as well. and to my John my late brother thanks for turning me on to the Spoonful and the Mamas and Papas years ago

  63. b.... f....

My wife is 6 years younger than me. So at the young age of 63 I still have a younger girl! She also makes more money than me so I think I scored!!!!!

    b.... f....

I'm in the same boat. :)

    b.... f....

mine is 32 years younger... 63 to 31... Jimmy Page got nuthin' on me ;) Of course it wouldn't mean anything if she wasn't as sweet as can be !

  64. S.... T....

Did you hear the Roman Polanski version of this?

    S.... T....

I think you have to be over 50 to understand that reference.  Sad, I understood it.

    S.... T....

    +Tim McCarthy oh behave

    S.... T....

    Tim McCarthy
    Hee hee . . .

    S.... T....

    Tim McCarthy fucking hilarious !!!

  65. s.... ....

Wish Mick Jagger, Stones did a Accoustic Version of this--That would be cool

    s.... ....

Jagger didn't have the refinement of Sebastian.

    s.... ....

sittin`on a fence sounds similar. same time

  66. C.... P....

Although I like the Critters' version, I always liked the Spoonful's version better. Maybe because they sound so laid back. Lots of great memories here. Thanks for the post :)

    C.... P....

@Claudette Preisinger I feel exactly opposite. To each their own.

  67. R.... T....

I'm right there with you Toby Blake.   We all thought it would last forever.   I'm still 20 you know for the past 42 years and will never get older.

    R.... T....

+Robert Taggett haa haa i'm 12 forever, if i could just convince some of my body parts

    R.... T....

Maybe DP says that because she knows she couldn't be able to live her life over again no matter how much money she's got. I'll neve have as much money she has but I'll be 68 in three months time.
It was the greatest time I had in my life, till I met my wife who's 10 years younger than I. That was about 38 years ago.
She's still the greatest thing in my life and we're still in love. As we both have Jesus we have a great eternity to look forward to.

    R.... T....

amen about noty living through some of them again, that is how i feel about the years between 12 and 16

    R.... T....

i am with you I listen to music from the 50s and 60s all the time

    R.... T....

I was born in 1950, but am in my mid-30s. I do avoid mirrors, however. Best to.

  68. C.... D....

One of those songs that are Always With Me!!!  Love my Live!!!!

    C.... D....

It was one of those songs that seem to come in the spring. One listen to the chords and you'll forget everything.

Where did I put my keys?

  69. t.... b....

I'm 66 and must be going thru my 2nd childhood, cause I love the Lovin Spoonful more than when they were popular on top 40 stations where I was raised in the 50s and 60s in LA. We took them for granted and thought rock n roll would last for ever. I'd bet John is still pickin n grinnin., what a great artist, John Sebastian.

    t.... b....

Ah! Those Wolfman Jack days... Wonderful...

    t.... b....

In Chicago it was Dick Biondi.

    t.... b....

    Great Song!

  70. P.... W....

This song is highly derivative of a 1930's blues song called Prison Wall Blues. The chorus is a straight lift from that song, but different lyrics.

    P.... W....

Really P Watts, who did "prison wall blues" in the 1930's? You're not suggesting the Spoonful ripped off that old blues tune are you? Anyway I love John Sebastian and the Loving Spoonful and this is a GREAT tune!

    P.... W....

@MusicMC1 The chorus is exactly the same. Some of the words are the same too. The verses are somewhat different though. John Sebastian had a background in jugbands and that's obviously where he picked this song up. Maybe its a tribute but the song is credited to him when really its a remake of a very old tune. Listen for yourself, its on YouTube.

The original was performed by Cannon's Jug Stompers.

    P.... W....

@MusicMC1 This was not the only Gus Cannon song to become a hit in the 1960's. Walk Right In (Rooftop Singers/Dr Hook) was written by him as well and apparently he was correctly credited on that one. He was still alive when The Younger Girl was made so its possible he gave Sebastian permission to use his song.

  71. N.... E....

My favorite version was by The Hondells.

    N.... E....

N Erole who the heck are the Hondells? Never heard of them.

    N.... E....

@MusicMC1  The Hondells was a group of popular L.A. studio singers and musicians (Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Chuck Girard, etc.) who are best known for their 1964 Top 10 hit "Little Honda."  They also charted with "My Buddy Seat" in 1965 and "Younger Girl" in 1966.

    N.... E....

Younger Girl was released by The Lovin' Spoonful, The Hondells and The Critters.

    N.... E....

Little Honda was also released by The Beach Boys and it is usually the third or fourth song in their current show.

  72. S.... P....

Not even close to the Critters version.

  73. h.... ....

This, of course, is John's original version of a classic song.  The hit version was by The Critters and you can find it here on You Tube.  Lead singer of The Critters was Don Ciccone, who would later sing lead on The Four Seasons' last #1 hit, "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)."

    h.... ....

Thanks for that interesting information. R.I.P. Ken Gorka bassist for the Crickets
And John Sebastian please stay in good health for a long long time at least! Can't wait to see JS again in concert real soon!

    h.... ....

@horarwgt Excellent musician just a strong supporter of Jodi's feel bad 4 her situation. don't feel it was a 1st degree murder because i feel she responded 2 his initial attack on her. everything after that came after that. i feel she is a beautiful awesome multi talented woman who deserved 2b loved and respected not used and abused. even thoug hi'm 20 yrs older then her it still don't change the way i feel about her. did u ever hear her sing? she has a beautiful singing voice.

    h.... ....

@horarwgt It wasn't quite. See my posts above.

    h.... ....

I don't mean to argue or anything but for me there's only one version of this song and it's this one here. But I hear what you're saying. It's just when I think 'Younger Girl' I think Spoonful.

    h.... ....

The Critters had the hit with this song and chances are that it was their version that most people heard first back in the 60's.  But Sebastian wrote the songs and the Lovin' Spoonful recorded it for their first album.  It was the Crittes who covered the song.  Both versions are worth listening to.

  74. L.... ....

JODI ARIAS HAS A BEAUTIFUL SINGING VOICE LVU JODI STAY STRONG BABY!

  75. s.... t....

very memorable! A visual song! This was a song I thought about a lot when I thought about girls back in the day. I have never stopped singing this song since 1967.

    s.... t....

it was the prodigy epic by the music

    s.... t....

    +pumas6100 ??

  76. M.... M....

The music of the 1960's was the best as well as immortal. The guys who ran the record companies had balls and good taste unlike record execs today. Most music today is absolute rubbish.

    M.... M....

I think "absolute rubbish" is putting it extremely politely.

    M.... M....

Well, that's what us old folks say but think of how much our parents hated rock and roll. (If you do have a "younger girl" girlfriend don't tell her you don't like her generation's music.)

I think it's high time a totally new genre of music was invented.

  77. g.... ....

Guess I am in a loving mood, haha

  78. G.... D....

Ahhh . . . life was never better!  Some of the best music to ever come down the pike.  So many great memories imprinted to the Lovin Spoonful music. I'd have to say that being a kid in the 60's was great, and made so much better by all the fabulous music of that decade. Spoonful, Beatles, Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, The Seeds, The Animals, Stones, The Mama's and the Papas, Jan and Dean, Ventures, Peter & Gordon, Jackie Deshanon, Cream, The Spinners, Temptations, The Supremes and on and on and on . . . . . .

    G.... D....

George Drifter from one hippie to another PEACE stays with you and around you I love being myself🎶hippy style all the way💖 flower's in our hair, flower's everywhere 👣🎶

    G.... D....

I have to agree, being a kid in the sixties was great.I got my first car,a Buick Special convertible, the worst car ever, aluminum heads and everything else bad,but I loved it.These songs bring back a lot of great memories.

    G.... D....

Right on my friend im 68 and totally agree

  79. J.... G....

Such a magical song I'm not from the 60s I'm a 2000s kid but this music is amazing cause right now I'm dating a 16 year old and I'm 19 and this makes me think of my sweetheart 3

    J.... G....

  80. J.... ....

1967 Man wha great Summer...girls smelling of "Charlie perfume", wearing short shorts tight as anything, it seemed as though all the girls just looked great. Summer camp was pleasant & eye opening, some of us just going through puberty trying to grow sideburns just to look cool.

I remember riding in my fathers Ford Fairlane going to the beach & this song playing during that year...long haired young beauties in bathing suits WOW !!

Times were simpler then, music like this played on AM radio.

  81. T.... R....

    The Lost Beatles!!!!

    I definitely concur!

  82. z.... ....

    i believe in magic

    z.... ....

It was hot that summer in the city when that younger girl who was a Nashville cat worked some magic. She didn't have to be that nice, I would have liked her anyway.

  83. m.... ....

The Critters version is just different, this song was written by John Sebastian, who is the guy bottom right in the photo ( not John Lennon as mentioned elsewhere

  84. t.... w....

i may be crazy but the bottom two guys kind of look like ringo and john

  85. B.... S....

Saw the band sing this last night at Medford Cruise in the Park- Fantastic! Still 3 Original Members!

everything has to be compared, categorized and ranked. It's everything we fought against! Tedious comparison.

  88. K.... H....

anything for a laugh eh lads? Even if it's not funny. Try and resist the obvious. It will take you far...

  89. h.... ....

Jim, some of your facts are skewed. It lends a jaundice to your view.

  90. E.... N....

THE CRITTERS COVER THIS SONG IT BETTER DONE BY THEM THAN THE SPOONFUL

  91. F.... M....

Funniest and most-agreeable comment concerning this song...EVER!!

  92. S.... H....

    I love younger girls <3

  93. j.... s....

hearing this for the first time as a kid, not so much happier, remember we were in the nam, kennedy was freshly dead, women hadnt the vote, and race riots were escalating . but the export rip off, known as the hippie movement, hadnt yet gained steam from leary and his drug addled psuedo researchers.

    j.... s....

Everyone ignore that "women hadn't the vote" statement. Women in America were granted the vote in 1910. This song came out something like 1967, 68? Hippie era well in swing by then. Woodstock was in '69.

  94. c.... ....

This is the theme song for pedophiles.

    c.... ....

Beautiful Boy by John Lennon is the flip side lol

  95. S.... V....

The song rows through my mind sometimes at night. Those times back in the 60's, so innocent and naive.

  96. S.... R....

anyone else notice that Zal could be Roger Waters' brother?

  97. V.... H....

my mom was a total Lovin spoonful groupie back then. said this song was written about her.

  98. j.... p....

Yeah this is a great tune, havent heard it for a long time
