Lovin' Spoonful, The - You Didn't Have To Be So Nice Lyrics
You didn't have to be so nice
I would have liked you anyway
If you had just looked once or twice
And gone upon your quiet way
I knew I'd find you in a day or two
And it's true
You came upon a quiet day
You simply seemed to take your place
I knew that it would be that way
The minute that I saw your face
And when we've had a few more days (When we've had a few more days)
I wonder if I'll get to say (Wonder if I'll get to say)
I would have liked you anyway (Would have liked)
Today I said the time was right for me to follow you
(Today, said that the time was right to follow you)
I knew I'd find you in a day or two
(I knew that I would find you in a day or two)
And it's true
You didn't have to be so nice (Didn't have to be so nice)
I would have liked you anyway (Would have liked you anyway)
If you had just looked once or twice (Once or twice)
And gone upon your quiet way (Quiet way)

Remindes. Me. Of. Kim. Adohpson. 1987
This is my mother's favorite song.
What a gem. The background vocals always captivated me, even when I was a little lad. The Lovin' Spoonful are truly a magical band and this is one of their very best jams. Sundae Driver enhances the experience.

Lovin Spoonful were basically a country band but they produced a fist full of wonderful pop singles in the 60's. I remember them with great affection as each single brings back memories of the time. Some not so good but there was nothing wrong with the songs.
last night(11/9/2019) i had a dream this song came up as my deceased girlfriend handed me the record to play it....so i downloaded it and trying to find the meaning of the dream
Im 42 and love this song!
This sends a shiver down my spine.....takes me back to being 15 again....so many good memories.
Epic song. One of the '60s Best
I'm a 58 years old man, & I was shopping at Smart 'n Final a week or two ago. As I entered the store, my eye's met those of a gorgeous brunette in her late 20's, I'd say. I walked away but was flattered as all get out. At the register she damn near cuddled up on me in line. 30 years earlier I would fairly say I met my soul-mate. ( I never have in my youth.) That moment transcended us both. Love at first sight btwn the two of us. I let it go & left the store. A little dazed. When I hear this song I think of my unnamed beauty, & feel born again.
It was sure great music to be 11 to.
John Sebastion came around in just the exact perfect time.
Miss You Zal !
This song goes out to about a thousand sweet girls I've run across in my 58 years.
There was a girl in a land far far away (Kansas, actually) who was nice to a nobody country kid and probably doesn't remember anything about me at all but...I fell in love with an angel. I got thru a miserable year at college away from home for the first time and surrounded with people way to hell smarter than I just holding on to a brief smile and touch of hands...I died a little when I had to go away.

S. Armstrong. The. Best
I always sing this You didn't have to be so nice,You wouldn't have liked me anyway.I'm more comfortable with these lyrics.More realistic where my life is concerned.
I sure miss those days. I may be old but I got to see a lot of great bands
Me too pal!
It's 2019 and we are at war with each other? What happened? Vote 2020! Bring back peace in America
Saw them at Buff State in 1968
I'm 28 and the stuff people my age listen to is trash!! I love these oldies!!
I'm close in age, and I couldn't agree with you any more.
Almost sounds like you were “Born Too Late”
You're listening to this - are you saying it's trash?
I listen exclusively to the music of the cosmos from the times before the big bang. Therefore, I win this contest of knowing older music.
Check out The Millennium, Sagittarius and anything Curt Boettcher had a hand in. Cheers.
a throwaway simple song...it sounds so beautiful down the years
Great Band , around to short a time , I loved the sixties so glad i was a teen then
Me Too!
Yeah, now THAT was great music back then!!!!
Classic
Love this song, Didn't have to be so nice by the loving Spoonful's
This was my first album, oh so many years ago!
This will always be my favorite song by the 'Spoonful." as we cool people called them in the day. Saw them 3 times. Husband hates them and I don't know how anyone could dislike music. One of the many groups we disagree on but we've been happily married for 47 years so you don't have to like the same music as your mate but it's nice when we agree! I just think he has lousy taste, that's all.
Husband needs to listen to you.
Love. Em
Always loved this song.
don't you just love how we dressed back in the 60's and 70's. Life was perfect. If kids only knew how easy the have it. but alas we all want to grow up too soon.
Idk about life being perfect
I played this album til it got worn out
The Lovin Spoonful have been one of my favorite bands since the 60s. The music still holds up after all these years. I catch John Sebastian in concert every chance I get.✌😎
takes me back to summer days with AM radio
you couldn't have said let alone sang ang played something like this such a beautiful song...its forever ACE PRIVILIGED
beautiful
Loved John Sebastian
this song goes around and around in my head
Surprised my wife with this song at our wedding. 25 years ago. Best friend coordinated with the band and sang it. Absolutely nailed it! Just me and her danced. Gown and tux! Doesn’t get better th
Roam 1. Yep. Pretty special. We were both 40 and had almost gotten married to someone else. Well worth the wait! God’s grace!
And HBO. I agree. It does get better. A wedding is just the beginning and when it’s right, the ups and the downs, kids, work...life stuff...it really is all good. Older, better, wiser.
Peace
@Don Rasmusson I'm 41 and still looking for my one and only. Glad you found yours, man 👍
Hey Roam. There is a still quiet voice that speaks to your spirit. You’ll just know. I used to take Gallup polls with my family and friends about potential mates. Finally one of my brothers said “we’ not the one who’s going to marry her, you are! It doesn’t matter what we think!” And he was right. I asked no one because I had peace. And it happened fast! So just listen to that voice! You’ll just know when she’s the right one!
Peace
@Don Rasmusson you're right, thanks for that, man 👍
Me too. Me too
God knows I love this song. It really captures the essence of a "far-out", hippie-chick. To Megan M.
such a beautifully sung a song
I didn't have to say it but this is definitely a classic frozen in time !!!!!!!!!!
Always enjoyed this one
Such a deceptively simple, wonderful song.
great song...the music is too loud..its not recorded right......
My favorite Spoonful song.....
same here, love this song
3/12/2019
wonderful band and talent
Kind of perfect.
One of our best. Love you, John Sebastian!
You didn't have to make up your mind, I love it!
I ❤ this song!
So smooth and soothing.
My favorite Lovin' Spoonful song!
Great harmonies
My favorite Spoonful song, And they had some great songs, :)
💞💞💞
WITH THIS SONG THEY DON T HAVE TO BE AFRAID TO THE BEACH BOYS
11/27/65 released so was Five O'clock World by the Vogues this day 2018
You know all those stupid CD music collections called "Now THIS is what I call music"? Well, they're wrong. THIS is what I call music.
Eureka! At last I found it, years and years looking for this amazing rola and now I got it, the first time I heard it was in Denver at kool 105 fm in 1993.
I just got incredibly stoned on halloween tonight and this song randomly popped in my head after like 10 years of never thinking of it
Ain't weed great?
God our minds work in mysterious ways don't they??
Awesome
This is a magnificent record, but don't listen on headphones - the lead vocals are all in one channel. Drives you nuts. Early stereo, eh?
I'm listening on my laptop and it sounds like John Sebastian is over to my left and the background singers are over to my right lol surround sound!
Thanks alexa
I fudging love this song. I was just 7 when it was released but somehow it got into my psyche and never left.
Me too !
I fudging love it too.
What yr did u first here this song?
Much love for the 60's
Especially the early 60's
Thanks Sony. Again, I don't listen to youtube to replace purchasing, but to find albums I want to buy, own and keep. A band it's taken me forty years to get round to investigating further than the two biggest hits I heard. This is another nice one for sure.
What a great song!!
Hands down their best tune.
Totally their best ever, love this song
Gotta differ from that. Although I love this song I love do you believe in magic. thanks to my older brother I found the loving spoonful. Gosh I was only in elementary school!
@Chris DeGaton me too for that reason as well
"darling be home soon" is great also
do you believe in magic
great song for a 10 year old boy going through puppy love..tears....
I grew up with these gents, sort of. This is the most beautiful song ever. A love story really.
Could we just hook up with people that are of our passions in life and then might you at least start to find the right mate or your soul. Instead of looking at the cutest, start to look for people who are following your passion. What do you want to change of this earth. Find the person that is compatible to you and I would say....Might be a date. LOL
WHAT DO YOU WANT DO TO CHANGE THIS EARTH....OR NOT...FIND A PERSON WHO IS OF YOUR BREATH. I AM CHANGING THIS EARTH. TIS OF ME. IF YOU ARE OF FUN AND GAMES TIS OF YOU. FIND SOMEONE YOU CAN RELATE TO. I WOULND'T BE OF YOU, BUT JUST FIND A PERSON WITH YOUR PASSION. I SAY.
Bridget, way back then," you didn't have to be so nice", but you were!
Bridget Bardot?
My first rock concert was in the summer of '67 in Providence, R.I.
Lovin' Spoonful was the headliner. The opening act?
Simon and Garfunkle.
What a great concert for a 17 year old high school kid from Ohio!
OwO
GOD SIR,So Cool!
I can imagine
Saw them many years ago: Line up: Blues Magoos; The Association & the Spoonful.
I wish I could remember my 1st but too many drugs may have clouded the memory but it would have probably been Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, or Eric Burton and War my best guess all good rock bands along with the sweet ballads of the Spoonful
Man I bet it was a bore waiting for the Spoonful to come on.
Very Beautiful Masterpiece
Soothing
Just brilliant non threatening peaceful tuneful genius!
